    Default Any Vegetrians on SW?

My partner is a vegetarian (though he does eat fish). He's been trying to convert me for some time. I was just wondering if any of you SWs have made the switch. Do you love being a vegetarian or did you go back to the meat? I'm from Texas, so meat is like a big deal here...I love meat, but I do feel bad about eating animals I don't think I'd mind trying out the lifestyle, just concerned about the variety?

Eating fish means you are not a vegetarian. Like, I don't mind if he eats fish - I'm not judging him for eating fish. But fish aren't a vegetable. Or a grain. Or... a tuber. Fish are animals. They are meat.

I gave up meat a little over 10 years ago, and honestly I don't feel it is lacking in my life. You'll find once you give it up, that you stop thinking about it - you'll autoscan menus removing the meat options in your mind and stuff. I pressured my exboyfriend - like I hounded him relentlessly - to give up meat. We agreed that if he tried it for 3 months and found that the quality of his life had been diminished, that I would never bring it up again. Fortunately, I was never tested on that. He never even considered going back to it.

Just a pet peeve...but your partner s NOT a vegetarian. He is a pescetarian if he still eats fish.

I was a stict vegetarian for years..but when i started to work out a lot I was always weak. No amount of soy or other protein seemed to work..so now I eat fish or poultry a few times a week.

But there is tons of variety in vegetarianism. n fact...you'll prob find it more so since you'll get out of the typical meat-and-potatoes rut many people find themselves in.

    ah, the fish fruit!

"almost" vegan here...no meat at all (yes, that includes fish!) It's pretty easy to find things for me to eat, but I find myself coooking a lot. It's probably better that way.

if you want to convert to vegetarianism, the best way is to do it slowly. Remove one thing at a time so you get used to eating that way. Then it will seem completely normal not to eat meat. I mean, it's like eating babies or something to me. Just the idea seems weird and disgusting to me now.

And watch the PETA propoganda. it's shocking, but it reminds you why you're doing it in the first place. Animal abuse and exploitation is not acceptable to me and I refuse to support a business that profits off it.

I knew I'd get it for saying he's a vegetarian but eats fishm, damn it!!! LOL...I know there's different types of vegetarians out there...some still eat dairy, some no dairy, some still eat chicken or fish, or no meat at all, ect. He still happens to eat fish but no dairy!
My daughter wants to become a vegetarian too...she's big into PETA...but her vegetable palette is limited. She's a pretty picky eater. I on the other hand, love all kinds of fruits and veggies. The problem is that I Love Meat too...
She made me watch a clip from PETA today about how we get our meat, and I have to say, it is enough to make me want to convert! Even though we do have a dog, I'm not a Huge animal lover (i love them from a distance ) but I def. don't agree with cruelty to animals, esp. just to have a steak.

I used to eat meat only if it was hunted or raised to kill by someone in the family (no super market meat). Vegetables were also grown within the family. You would be surprised how often companies have bad farming practices. In my view a carrot can be as ill treated as the rabbit. They are both living entities. We as humans have to consume some outside energy to keep our own energy up. It is the way of nature.

Now I sadly eat chicken nuggets from fast food restaurants more than I would like to admit. I am curbing that habit quickly. It is selfish of me to blame my eating of fast food on time constraints, but I do it. I am changing it back though. Yeah cooking mmmm...

Going to farmer's markets helps with the variety of things. You can talk to the farmers about their farming practices too. Sometimes you can find free range or organic meat as well.

I find myself in the fruit section of Wal-Mart often. The quality is often lacking though.

Genetically modified foods, whether it be vegetable, tuber, fruit, animal, whatever...it SCARES me. www.truefoodnow.org is a great network of good information.

I have always been omnivore myself but strongly support my vegetarian friends. I have a hard time seeing a difference between cruelty to animals and cruelty to vegetables though. Whatever you choose to eat, you should choose to eat food that was brought to your plate environmentally responsibly and ethically.
Your boyfriend should respect your food choices and you should respect his as well, but don't let anybody make decisions for you.

Quality is harder to find than Variety.

No..if you eat meat of any kind you are NOT vegetarian. People may still call themselves veg...but that doesnt make it true.

Sorry...but this is why restaurants serve things with fish or cooked in chicken broth and call it vegetarian...and it is a pretty big problem with people are are actually veg.

I dont care what people eat for the most part...but if you eat meat of any kind, beef, chicken, fish, game...anything....PLEASE do not call yourself vegetarian. It makes life so much more difficult for those who really are.

We reading ^^^ and it makes me fucking sick...is this how it is with all animals? What about the animal products you find in places like Whole Food Markets? I mean, there's got to be places where animals are treated more humanly for human consumption ?

No. There are vegans, lacto-vegetarians and ovo-lacto-vegetarians. There are no chicken and fish eating vegetarians. Because chicken and fish are animals. Again - I stress the whole "I'm not judging him for eating fish" - but you cannot be a vegetarian and eat meat.

I also like eating bugs, especially worms. Bugs are good nutrients.

I just want to say again

whether it be animal, bug, or plant....

all of those entities can be ill treated before they reach your plate.

You have to look at ALL the food you eat and how it got from nature to your dinner table. A plant or bug suffers pain just like an animal does. I don't know of any groups like PETA that speak on behalf of plants or bugs but I am sure they are out there. I don't know if you SW's think about where your veggies come from and their well being too. I hope so (I am curious).

Organic has more nutrients usually anyway.

I'm new to this whole Vegetarian thing, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance when it comes to all the terminology. I have to say though in his defense, he's at work right now and not here to correct me, so I called him. He said he's a Pesce-Vegetarian and to go look it up on the web...here's what I found

I have heard it called pesce-vegetarian, but pescetarian is a better term. Only because anything that has "vegetarian" in the title gives the wrong impression and furthers a misguided view of vegetarianism.

Like I said...for me, its just a pet peeve. But when i was strict veg..I feared eating out. because even if something SAID it was veg..it was likely to have chicken or fish in it...simply because people do not understand what being veg really is.

...even though he eats fish, he' completely the same way when it comes to eating out. Even at home! I bought something once (don't remember what it was though) but he wouldn't eat it cause after reading the label, he saw it had chicken broth in it. So, he's very picky himself, just eats fish from time to time

I was raised to not eat beef, pork or any kind of "red" meat. My mom only served fish and poultry. Eventually I discovered bacon and ate various types of meat in moderation. When I grew older and developed a bit of a conscience and watched my dad process a deer in our kitchen, I stopped eating meat for MANY years. Eventually I lived a totally vegan lifestyle for about 3 years, but then moved in with a hardcore carnivore who was on the Atkins diet, and I was in an area where I didn't have access to a health food store. It was hard to keep eating the same way. Like Cameron, I felt weak a lot too and craved chicken badly at times.
Eventually I went back to eating meat. I feel like a fucking hypocrite for not living the lifestyle I used to because I truly feel bad about what happens in factory farms and especially in dairy farms. They keep the cows alive and pumped full of hormones to rape it of their milk, which is almost worse to me than killing it mercifully. It's exploitation. I understand how horrible it is, yet I am not in a position to be able to eat that way right now.
It's true that you do get used to it to some degree, but there will always be temptations and it's not always easy depending on where you live. When you don't stay on top of it like you should with supplements and such, your health can suffer.
Switching should be a slow process, and you should be educated on the nutritional requirements as well as the PETA-ish stuff. The animal slaughter videos are what fueled my initial desire to give up meat and dairy, but it doesn't "keep" unless you stick with a planned out and well rounded diet. One who just eats granola cannot call themselves a healthy vegan.

I'm a Texan and a vegetarian for a few years now. Even though most of our restaurants have giant cow-heads on the walls, it is possible to go veg in TX. Theres usually even an option or two at the dead-eyed animal head restaurants, if you happen to be dragged there by friends and family.

With all diets, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. As a veg or vegan you can still get plenty of protein and dont have to be weak. I feel fine, I have not lost energy at all. I was anemic for most of 4 years as a meat-eater but as a vegetarian now my iron is at an ideal level. You just have to eat a variety of foods. With all the meatless substitutes out now its really very easy to give up meat.

Disclaimer - I have only read the original post of this thread.

I'm a special type of vegatarian. I was raised in a meat eating environment tho' when I was living out of home... it just was a natural way for me to go. I don't miss eating beef, pork, lamb. Love the smell, can't stand the taste.

I havn't eaten beef, pork, lamb for nearly a decade now. Chicken I eat rarely. I mainly eat fish/seafood and dairy so I could never be vegan.

Being vegie (or my type) is easy! There are so many delicious foods out there. I don't miss meat one bit...

I posted this awhile ago here in BB to show that you can still get plenty of protein if you are vegie.

I'm a vegitarian. I do not eat any type of meat, although I do like dairy, and eat scrambled eggs on occasion.

My reason for vegitarianism is different that most people tho. I have always been one. I have never liked or eaten meat. Yeah...I've never had a steak.

My family are meat eaters, my dad was a hunter who brought home his kill as well, so I have no explaination for why I don't like meat. I just don't have a taste for it? As a baby I woudl refuse meat if my parents tried to feed it to me. Honestly, I would eat meat if I liked it. But I don't. I have tried chicken, and I just don't like it. I refuse to try red meat. Ithink it is disgusting.

I do buy organic eggs and milk, although I am not big on eggs to much, I force myself to eat them sometimes just because my det lacks protien.

I am a very picky eater. I don't like many fruits or veggies either....I survive off carbs. Pasta, potatoes, unhealthy stuff. Recently I bought a juicer and found there are many fruit juices I love, even if I don't like eating the fruit. So I have been tryign to drink some juice every day. I try to hide veggies in other foods as well. I hide veggies in my juice, and I have foudn sneaky ways to hide veggies in stuff, like I hve been putting spinach in my eggs, or in my pasta. Maranara sauce is a great way to hide more veggies.

I am just an odd girl. I wish I wasn't so picky. It has made my life difficult, liek when going to other peopl's houses for dinner, or pickign a restraunt to eat at.

I've been a vegetarian since I was 17, and I'm now 33. I dont eat any meat, eggs, milk, though I will eat cheese and ice cream occasionally. Most of my protein comes from soy, nuts, etc. There is so much to eat that is vegetarian. You won't feel like you are depriving yourself. The key is to eat a variety of foods. I like being a vegetarian and I won't ever eat meat again.

I haven't eaten meat in 6 years, and I never will again. After awhile you dont miss it anymore, it wont even register as food. Going vegetarian was the best thing i've ever done for my health (physical and spiritual). I was a vegan for a year, and right now im almost fully transitioned back to that.

exactly! When people eat something with meat im always kinda surprized for some reason. It just seems so barbaric. like : you mean people still do that?

Oh and when i went vegetarian it was cold turkey (pun intended, hah!) Since that point ive never knowingly eaten meat, including fish, chicken, beef, pork, gelatin, etc etc. nothing. Oh and btw there are delicious meat alternatives out there

IMO someone who still eats fish is NOT a vegetarian, no matter what fancy words they use to label it. An animal is an animal. Everytime I tell some someone I'm a vegetarian this is the first thing out of their mouth....ive heard it at least 100 times. "do you still eat fish" -----NO!

there an even stricter form of veganism that avoids eating vegetables/fruits that would result in the death the vegetable/fruit. For example the carrot would not be eaten because it is the root, and picking it kills the entire plant

BUT an apple for example is MEANT TO BE EATEN. The tree is the plant and is not harmed when the apples are taken. The tree produces apples with the sole purpose of spreading its seeds. How are the seeds spread?..by animals picking the fruit, eating it, thus carrying it to another place and spreading the seeds
