Default Do we choose our parents before we are born?

Just something I read somewhere re: metaphysics. I asked one friend who lives in NoCal about this in an email once, since he was experimenting with astral travel at the time. Yet on this topic, he almost went berserk in his reply.

Berserk, since his father was very abusive, so he doesn't believe this is possible at all.

It's just a topic I'm curious about, since I had two very good parents, even if my mother did have an OCD problem (compulsive hoarding, in her case).

Some hold that on a metaphysical level, we all actually choose our parents before we are born because we must learn specific things from them, even if one or both are abusive.

On the other hand, I once went to a lecture where the speaker held that when a soul wanted to take physical form, the closest intertwined couple would do just fine. That's the explanation my friend prefers.

I did NOT choose my parents. I totally got the shit end of the stick by whoever did the choosing.

And why, for example, would anyone choose the type of parents that daddy rapes while mommy hold her down? Or to be born to a heroine addicted mother. And if we choose our parents, why woudl we choose a parent who didn't want us, and dumped the baby in the dumpster? Ans although my bad parents have taught me what NOT to do, I cannot fathom what can possibly be learned from growing up in an abusive home. I can't see what could possibly be learned from being born to a monther who didn't want you, and threw you away like trash. I don't knwo what could possibly need to be learned from growing up locked in a basement getting fed scraps every 3 days.

No. We do not choose our parents, and unfortunatly, some of us realyl get screwed over. But not everyone can be born into good families.

I know if I coudl have choosen my parents, I woudl have been born into royality. I should have been a princess

Interesting idea especially for someone like me who was planned for by my Mom and Dad but no, I don't think we pick our parents. I think the person who is born to parentsis more about genetics than metaphysics.

Im fairly sure that I did - I have wondered why often though, lol! However I can remember the feeling of joy I had when I realised I was born into this family. So despite the fact that life hasnt been perfect and there have been some really hard times, at the end of the day its all obviously meant to be and I can make something out of it in the grande scheme of things.
(Ive said this here a few times before but incase its not obvious or if you missed it - I can remember bits of past lives.)

From what I can make out after having done related reading, not everyone gets to choose though. Some people (get to) choose. Others dont have any say at all as to who their next life will be, and some are in a hurry to get back on earth and just take whatever life comes up next.

I think its dangerous to say that we all choose our parents. Even if it were the case, not everyone is ready to hear that and not everyone understands the concept of reincarnation, life lessons and karma so it can be an awful thing to say to some people.
Plus its not a belief system that everyone wants (or needs) to take on, so of course its highly offensive to many (-:

    Edited to add:
Its also interesting at what point the soul appears to enter the body. Ive read a fair few accounts of other peoples past life regression experiencies and for those who go back far enough can often recall entering their bodies. It seems it can happen during pregnancy or not until the birthing process.
(I dont want to turn this into yet another abortion debate, but reading about all of the above fully reinforced my pro-choice views.)

i think we do. even in the worst situations there are life lessons and strengths to be learned. that is the ultimate goal of reincarnation to live so many lives and ways and to know things froma ll different angles so you can understand everyone in the worlds life pain and joys.

    thats my take on it.

    Yep. I think we do.

I find metaphysics questionable at best. I tend to classify it as a psuedo-science. It smacks too much of New Age hippie-dippy bullshit to me. I'm disinclined to believe anything that's unsupported by reasonably solid evidence. New Age philosophies don't score much above organised religion in my book.

Metaphysics is a fiction, based on a misinterpretation of Aristotle.

Everything that exists is reality based, and thus natural, and thus falls under 'physics'...which is not to say that our conception of physics will ever get close to knowing all there is to know.

I have a rather odd view of Christ, which I'm sure would be considered blasphemous by a number of organized religions. That being, I regard him as possibly being some kind of renegade scientist instead of being a religious leader as presented today. Most likely being well-versed in the discipline of physics, especially re: manipulating light and frequencies. The only way I can even partially attempt to explain my viewpoint is with the following analogy:

To go to a concert a few hundred years ago, the musicians actually had to be there to play the music. The only music available were "live" concerts or someone at a piano, harpsichord, etc.

Then not so long ago, really, we had wax cylinders and a bit later, vinyl, both with grooves which could store a one-to-one representation of sound. The sounds could then be recreated by a needle vibrating while following those groves.

Later, sounds were stored on magnetic tape, whether reel-to-reel or cassette. But the representation of the music, in this case, is stored at a much higher frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum. Then we have CD-players, which store and reproduce sound using laser light, at yet higher frequencies. Now, we have MP3 players, wherein the sounds are reproduced by electron flow, albeit at about the same frequency as when stored via CD media.

I simply believe Christ was a highly advanced scientist, although that's just a feeling from various things I've read about him, both pro and con. Since I wasn't there at the time, it's not something I can prove. But to me it makes sense, if "The" Crucifixtion was actually being done to some kind of hologram which was far more sophisticated than we know of today, which would also explain events following this particular crucifixtion. Where he actually might have been from, in this case? I have absolutely no idea. Not everyone's "cup of tea," I'm sure, but that is what I currently believe.

Does this have to be about religion? I think not. Im essentially still an atheist. I dont have much time for new agers or religion. My beliefs are based mostly on what I remember and have experienced / seen.

One of the more interesting theories Ive read though Phaedrus (-:

I just wonder...you would rather believe that your God put you in the horrible situations in life? Put you on a predestined path of torture and abuse?

I didn't have the easiest childhood...but I did learn a lot. While you may have "forgotten" the big picture...you are here to learn. I believe that every soul has an agreement with all of the other souls they encounter in their lifetimes.

A great book (that I read to my daughter) is called "Little Soul and the Sun" by Neale Donald Walsch.

It makes you accountable for the things that happen in your life. You may not "conciously" call those situations to you...but if you look at it in the way of, "What am I calling to myself and why" as opposed to "I am such a victim...woe is me"...you'll get much farther in life.

Oddly I was thinking about this yesterday, because my dad (who is an honest man) told me my conception was a total accident (I was made in the back seat of a car after a spring dance, LOL) & my parents were a disasterous pair. But I'm still here.

I don't believe in victimhood either but there are some horrifically awful situations that happen to people & I would hesitate to say to someone "you asked for it."

I feel Eastern religions have a greater grasp on the Truth of existence than Western philosophy- this theory fits better in the system of Reincarnation...

Neale Donald Walsch also wrote the awesome Conversations With God trilogy. He's amazing. I have to get that book for children.

I've had a very spiritual experience which has led me to believe that yes, we do choose our parents before birth. We come to this earth to go through difficult and challenging times so that our spirits will grow and be strengthened. We may choose abusive parents to fulfill a purpose that we have here on earth. Yes, it may seem senseless that a soul would choose abusive parents, but the soul does so to fulfill a purpose.

Everyone on earth has a purpose. But they also have creative powers that they can use at will. You can use your creativity for good and be rewarded or use them for bad and be punished. That is why it is so important to love yourself, for then you will do your best to make good choices for yourself so you'll live a happy life.

OK. I'm getting off topic. But yes. We do choose our parents.
