Default Skimpier Girls Clothing: Trendy or Tacky?

An article by Lisa Nicita in today's "The Arizona Republic" appeared under the banner: "Exasperation rises as suggestive clothing for girls spreads from teens to toddlers".

Some mothers interviwed asserted that it's difficult to find appropriate clothing for their 4-year old daughters at retail chains or mall shops. Are they simply overreacting, or might they be correct?

Kids are supposed to wear kids' clothes, not mini adult clothes. Kids should be wearing ridiculous frilly dresses, jeans, T-shirts, little ruffly swimsuits, etc. They should not be rushed into adulthood in any way, wardrobe included.

I sometimes see what little girls are wearing today, and wonder if Fischer-Price released a "Turning My First Tricks" playkit.

What makes me twitch more than the Bratz is the baby Bratz. Hello? Toddlers in halter tops?

They have those? Ugh - my kid will be wearing sweaters until she's thirty, goddammit! We'll also be guarding the porch with a pitchfork and hose to ward off any young suitors. Well, maybe not so much but I will not be allowing her to play with those stupid Bratz dolls or dress like a street prostitute. Clothing for warm/hot weather is one thing but provocative clothing for the hell of it on a little kid is unacceptable. I also blame pageants...a little girl wearing red lipstick and blue eyeshadow is a sad thing to see.

This is whats screwed up about people...they think nothing of lettin their 8 yr old parade around like Britney Fucking Spears..then are SHOCKED when she ends up pregnant at 14. And then proceed to blame everyone from the girls friends to Britney herself. Here's a thought...how about we dont let the babies dress up like 20 yr old hootchie mamas and allow them to have a CHILDHOOD??!!.

I see SO much of this here....kids...seriously CHILDREN..not even teens yet walking around in clothes that I ..a stripper/porn chick...wouldnt wear in public. My parents would have locked me in my room and thrown away the key if I had paraded around looking like a whore at that age. Hell..they would now if they could...
Theres a time and a place for slutty clothes. And a public place worn on a child is neither.

Sexualizing little girls waaaay before their time is pretty much the way the child clothing market operates these days. It's a pedophile's wet dream out there.

Hell, I remember being in eighth grade and glancing at a girl had bent over (at the waist, ass out, and on purpose. This I distinctly remember) and she was wearing a Victoria's Secret G-STRING. It was decorated with little pearls and a charm. You don't wear those for the hell of it. I was thoroughly disgusted.

I gave my sister the Bratz doll rant when my neice, who is all of three years old, showed up at my huse for ice cream with one of those blasted dolls in tow. It's not allowed in my home. GRRRR. At least Barbie had a job. I convinced my sister to cough up the Bratz doll for a barbie. I never thought I'd see that day, but it was a welcome exchange.

the issue of such things as teen pregnancy goes deeper than this, but you have nailed a lot of it. Also, the over-sexualization and maturity-rushing that the media feeds kids is disgusting...but again, parents are to blame. Too many parents want to see themselves in their kids...

Oh obviously teen pregnancy in general is much more complex...it just never fails to amaze me that parents dont seem to see the connection between their young daughters dressing and acting slutty and actually BEING slutty. If you ok your kid to wear hot pants and a belly shirt out at 10 years old...dont act all shocked if she's a teen mom. Some kids stop at the front...but for many..if they are trying so hard to project that image of being older then they are..they will likely follow through with the actions.

I would never allow any child of mine..male or female(if I had kids...but will not allow it in any child in my care either)to act, speak or dress age-inapporopriate. No slutty clothes, no harsh language, etc....

Kids already feel the pressure from the media to act older...they need to be reassured that it is OK to be a kid for as long as they can.

What would you think about second graders wearing makeup, bras, thong underwear that says "boytoy," and having boy-girl parties with their parents' encouragement.

It's happening. Some parents are living through their children.

And then some pervert rapes and kills a LITTLE girl, and his excuse is, "She wanted it. She tempted me. She made me do it."

I always found it WAY embarrassing when a fifth grade girl would bend over and I could see down her neck, or bending the other way, I could see the straps on her thong. I developed a really good reflex for looking at interesting things on the ceiling. But I did not dare to talk to them myself, so I always played the dumb, naive old guy, then went to another female teacher, the counselor, or the principal (also female) and would ask them to talk with the girl. It did not always do any good.

Bah. If parents would make their kids wait for the appropriate age, there would be less teen pregnancy, teen marriage, teen divorce....

My sister has two kids, one of them is an 8 year old girl. Total sweetheart and innocent. I've had several conversations with her and her husband about how hard it is to find age-appropriate clothes for her. Some girls this age are getting FRENCH MANICURES...and pedicures. Unbelievable how clueless some parents are.

    ^^^ hahahhaa....

    "skanque..." i love it!

anyway... the problem with these skimpy clothes is that they are meant to sexualize children... they are cut/decorated in a way that enhances bodies that have not even started developing yet, which is just wrong. They are adorned with materials that attract the eye to places where nothing exists, nor should it for quite a while. There is a HUGE difference between warm-weather clothing (even normal, unsexual tank tops!!!) and skimpy halter-tops for 7 yr olds (or younger!!!).

What REALLY irks me is the "writing on the butt" trend... and how 8-14 yr olds are embracing it. jesus f*cking christ... The fact that retailers are doing this speficially to target this underage market makes them (imho) responsible for 85% of the predatory glances that little girl gets from older men. Are retailers encouraging pedophilia??? sick.

This is quite normal. They come in all the time trying on all kinds of lingerie, bras, and garter belts, and yap on and on about their boyfriends, etc, etc, too. I didn't even know what this stuff was until I was at least 16!

Also...8-11 year old girls will come into the store begging their mothers to buy them sexy lipglosses, body sprays, lotions, creams, and butters. It's getting absolutely ridiculous! I wonder if these girls's mothers know exactly what the hell is going on with their daughters, or if they actually fucking care!

You know, that's a really good question. A huge part of me thinks "Yes" because essentially big corporations are the government. In such a fascist way, they are attempting to control us by keeping us oppressed. Molestation and abuse keep us in a loop of self-hate, thus making it easier to brainwash us and sell us products that are intended to look like cures for the very brainwashing they impose upon us.
Maybe I'm getting a little too political, but I don't think my theory is all that far from the actual truth.
Keeping young girls sexualized (and therefore abused) makes it so much easier to sell them products and services later in life.

^^^ I agree. It's training girls/women/females in general to be sexual and to dress/act to please men at a very young age. It teaches them that their bodies are not their own... that they much show off what they have, and if they don't "have it," they must strive to get it, or hey, why not buy it! It numbs girls to the entire process by starting them at such a young age that by the time they are women, they are totally desensitized, and know almost innately that this is simply what is normal societal expectation/standard. This is one of the reasons why women don't stand up for themselves when they are cat-called... they think it's normal, deserved, and they should be proud... after all, it's an affirmation of beauty/sexiness, right? not a rude, chauvinistic display of bad taste...

*shrug* I started wearing "hoochie" clothes at age 9..got a gift card for $200 to contempo(remember those? lol) and it took off from there. thongs, belly shirts, whatever i could get my hands on. I dont know, i guess its because im younger then alot of people on this site(not in a bitchy way, just saying i grew up with slutty clothes being "cool" ), i mean in my group of friends at that time i was the last one to finally get the cool mall clothes lol...my mom was too busy with her boyfriend to say anything. one day i asked her if she gave a fuck i was going to school in 3 inch heels, a skirt that my ass was hanging out of and a "Porn Star 69" tank top(i wasnt even sure what a porn star was!!) and she was like "as long as you go to school, i dont care what you do"

At the time, i thought it was so cute! I look back now and i cant believe the things i used to wear . I seen a girl in publix the other day and she had to be about 10 or 11 and her shirt said "slippery when wet" and it had a naked chick on it.

You see the prosti-tots all over the place at any mall you go to. It's sickening but facts are facts, some parents just can't be bothered to actually parent and just do/agree to anything that will shut their kids up.
