    Mock Bandanas

Several years ago there was a very brief fad involving these little mock bandana thingies. It's basically a little triangle of pretty fabric with two long strings attached; you tie the strings under your hair at the back of your neck, and it looks like you're wearing a bandana. I LOVED these things. A regular bandana is uncomfortable and hard to tie; these keep long hair out of my face and off my neck, and they look so cute!

I had a huge collection of them several years ago, but I got a short butch haircut and got rid of them. Now my hair is long again and I've been looking for these, but I never see them anywhere. Does anyone know what they're called or where I can find them? I Googled "mock bandana" but it didn't lead to anything.

I really really really want some more of these!!

    I was bored:

I don't know if this is enough though. I am usually really good at finding things in an internet search and honestly this one was really tricky. It is either called a "headscarf" or a "kerchief".

They look like they would be easy to make. Just get a regular bandana, cut it in half and then sew a ribbon with a hem on the long side.

I also found these while I was looking around:

    Might be worth trying out.

I used to see those all the time at 99 cent stores mixed in with the other bizzare hair accessories of yesterday. If I see any crop up around LA I'll let you know.

They do look really easy to make. Remnant bin ftw!

Ooh, I'll check in Chinatown. They do look easy to make but I don't know anyone with a sewing machine.

Yea I saw some at Claire's too. But you don't even need a bandana to make one, you could just look around in the fabric sections at Wal-mart or something and buy a square of the fabrics you like and get creative. Oh, you could get one of those things that puts gems/rhinestones on fabric and make em all pretty!

It should work just fine for sewing ribbon on a bandana, you just have to make sure you take it slow or else the stitching will be crooked.
OMG, you have one?! Mine's sick, do you know how to fix it? It used to sew nice sturdy stitches, and now they just pull right out. It's like if the bottom bobbin wasn't there in a regular sewing machine, but it doesn't have a bottom bobbin so wtf?

Is it one of those little ones that just deos the chain stitch? It sounds like a chainstitch and the loops aren't catching. Why not take it to get looked at?

Yek, I think you could get one of the little machines or even one for $90 at wal mart and make your own so easily!!!

NO NO NO! BAD SWers NO!

If you wanna spend a LITTLE money for a GOOD machine, get a vintage Singer. You can find those things at garage sales for $20 and nobody knows their value. For $40 you can get it oiled and put in perfect condition (or $5 and do it yourself) and it's SOOO much better than those crappy handheld As Seen on TV crapolas AS WELL AS those oh-so-plastic Wal-mart shits that break in two weeks and can't sew fricken denim. Vintage Singers can last 100+ years.. I'd like to see a plastic shitstick do that. I know people with $5,000+ machines who still break out their Tilt-O-Matic Singer for some hardcore sewing.

    LOL, thanks, Morri!

I don't really have money to blow on sewing machines and people don't really do garage sales around here; I'd like to learn to sew one day, but right now I don't even have the space for it, much less the time. I'd rather just find these headkerchiefs somewhere. At least now I know what they're called! I'll hit Claire's and Chinatown this weekend. Thanks!

Haha, you reminded me of my grandparents. My gran will only use the old fashioned sewing machines and my grandad used to sew the sails for his boat/s on them up until not so long ago, so yeah theyre good!

^ You are honestly the first person I have ever heard of in my life having success with those stupid things. Most people I know can't even figure out how to backstitch the damn thing if they can get it to work at ALL.

Yeah, but I don't have that kind of electricity. I'd love to have an old hand crank sewing machine, especially the "toy" Singers that were really small, but I definitely don't see them at yardsales for $20.

I had a walmart machine in high school that was $100 and lasted me about 4 years, that thing was great and probably would have lasted longer if I'd had it maintained better, lol.

I have a very, very heavy foot (as evidenced by my driving record! ), so a regular sewing machine gets me frustrated because I end up pushing the pedal too hard and sewing farther than I intended!
They really are good machines for little things, I love my little portable machine!!

Yek, why don't you just go get some hankies you like and send them to me. They seriously only take like 3 minutes to make, I'd love to make some for you if you want!

4 years is not a long time for a sewing machine.. especially considered my Singer was lasting 35 years when I BOUGHT it. It's done another 10.

    $100 for 4 years
    $35 for 45 years

    Hmm.

Well, that's why I made the comment about maintenance, lol. I still have the machine packed up I would just need to take it in to the shop and it would be fine. The only reason I haven't is because I have huskys now that I love more.

See now I'd like to get some of those to wear over my too big dreads. They don't look right at the base of the falls so I'd like to cover em just there, let the actual dreads hang out the back... HMMMM....
