    Default Drinking water in Germany?

I am going to Germany in about a week, and I was wondering about the safety of the tap water.
On past trips, German friends of my have always said that mineral water was "healthier," and I'm not sure if this is just because they think the spring water has some sort of actual health benefit or if the tap water is genuinely tainted.
Carbonated water is too much for my little tummy, and I don't like to pay for still water. I'm cheap.
    Anyone know?

The water is safe, it's a cultural thing. I don't have any hard knowledge or data but it's like going to San Francisco where everyone has bottled water, though the tap water is safe. Western Europe has stricter laws on most safety type things so it would be surprising if it wasn't true for water as well.

I drank the water in Dresden and Berlin. Keep in mind though that if you ask for water at a restaurant they'll give you bottled water unless you're very specific. The most popular brand seemed to be Spa. The red bottle has bubbles, the blue bottle is still.

'Germany' is kinda a broad statement there. Kinda like saying 'I'm visiting the US, how's the water'... the answer will always be, "Depends on where you go."

I'm pretty sure the waters safe, when I went it was fine and even when I went to Croatia it was fine (the tap was actually really good in croatia (taste wise)..anyhoo Europeans just have a things for min. water. All my relatives drank mineral water which I find repulsive.
It also stays cooler in the heat like if you stick a bottle of mineral water in the fridge it will stay much coolr than normal water.

I never drank out of the tap when I was in Germany...but they do have some of the best bottled water I've ever had!!! I don't remember the names of them, though.

Germany is such a green, beautiful, nice, clean country, though, IMHO. The water shouldn't be too bad. Do some research.

I used to live in Germany. The water is about 110% clean and it tastes good. But, culturally Germans don't really like to drink their tap water; they believe that is reserved for bathing and cleaning. Something like " Why would you drink the same water you bathe with?" mentality. They will look at you like you're strange if you order tap water in restaurants.

I just toured Southern Germany, but I drank the tap water everywhere. They always try to give you the sparkling stuff otherwise. No one really thought that was weird, I don't think. Though my uncle told me eating chicken was cruel when I asked why chicken is not so popular there. But veal is fine. Whatever. I also drank the tap water in Paris and London. I don't think I was poisoned.

^^ Yeah, Germany is the first place I ever tried veal

And i found it funny how in Bavaria there were a ton of Italian restaurants, and the McDonald's were NICE. ( The nicest one was in Austria though)

Agreed^^^I used the tap water all the time, drank it myself, and mixed my son's formula etc. Tasted fine.

Now if only all the Germans there would use the water to actually bathe. We could smell our cleaning guy at my building a mile away, and it wasn't his cleaning products either .

Remember if you want ice cubes to ask too....and even if you do you'll likely only get one or two in your drink.

They have a thing for room temperature beverages over there that drives me nuts.

As I understand it, water quality is generally federally mandated, so it does tend to be at least fairly consistent for countries.
So, yeah, if you asked how the water quality in the US is, I could tell you that it's safe to drink. It may taste differently, but it won't get you sick.
I don't intend to order tap water in restaurants-- I understand that that's just not done. I'm pretty poor, though, so I'm going to usually just be doing the buy-some-bread-and-cheese-and-eat-it-on-a-bench thing, and I want to just fill up my water bottle at the tap.
I called an acquaintance that used to live in Germany, and he said that tap water is actually more regulated than bottled water, and that I should be fine drinking it.

    YES, the room temperature thing!
My german friends also told me that cold drinks are unhealthy-- they bring your body temperature down?
Cultural things like that are so interesting.

Spa Blau is the still bottled water. But I recall its more popular in Netherlands than in Germany. Just ask for still water. And the tap if fine over there, just refill your water bottle with it.

My relatives living in Germany only get bottled water, and they are poor. But then again, they are used to icky Ukrainian tap, so they're accustomed to buying bottles of water.

Damn, you know I usually hate water, it's too plain for me, but the tap water in Germany was better tasting than many bottled waters in the US!
