    Default Cheap Checks?

It's that time of the decade when I have to buy new checks. My bank wants to charge $20/box. Eh, I know that it would only save a couple of bucks, but are there any other places where I can get them cheaper? I mean, I'm going to switch permanent addresses within a year, so it's not worth getting a huge box that I'm going to throw the majority out.

People still use cheques?! Man I thought those things died when ATMS were born.

Except once I got an e-cheque. That's right, a virtual cheque. What the FUCK?! WHO sends an e-cheque?!

(sorry, no real advice here, just ranting..)

Hell, I still write about four checks a month.

Needless to say, be careful with some of these cheap check companies. I ordered a previous batch from Checks Unlimited, and when it came time to renew...well...the renew batch was just as expensive as the ones from my bank, so I went back to the bank.

The one thing most people dont realize is that if there is any issues with checks you order other places banks wont lift a finger to fix it.

For example if the numbers at the bottom are incorrect and you end up with alot of bounced checks it is all on you. If the bank prints the checks and there is any issues all fees, tracking, and any issue is covered.

You can always order half boxes too.

I've never heard of checks bouncing because there was something wrong with the numbers on the bottom of the check. They usually just print off that yellow magnetic number strip and stick it on the bottom of the check.

Also, the check companies use the same system as each bank to make the checks.

You can always order half boxes, yes. But, it's still a rip-off. There is no way that the plain, unadorned checks are worth $20 a BOX.

AND, most check printing places guarantee their checks...so if the bank won't do anything, then the place that printed your checks (unless it was your typo) will pick up the damages from their mistake...which is why they strive to make it perfect.

Working in banking, I have seen it happen alot.

People sending in the wrong numbers ie the numbers at the bottom of deposit slip which is a common mistake. Their printing process is actually alot cheaper than a banks. I have seen where numbers were missing at the bottom on a whole box of checks. Not to mention micro printing and other security features.

Even if the printing is guarnteed it is a long process to get your money back.

I would rather pay the extra money knowing my transactions are covered then save a few bucks.

It is just a heads up from what i know working in banking .

Thanks for the advice. I guess it is worth the extra coin to get the bank's checks. I decided that I'm not going to get new checks until I move. I pay my rent in cash and if I need a couple paper payments, I can get a money order.

Not that this will help you much, but I get my checks through the Humane Society. They arent cheaper, but a portion of the proceeds goes to help the animals, so for me it helps justify the expense. I write quite a few checks a month though...some bills occassionally(though most i pay online), my pool guy I pay with a check and my agent's commission I write a check for.

And I get cute puppy and kitten checks!

Wow, is this old information!! All of the online check places (checks unlimited) actually VERIFY your account information. They match the account information (routing number, account number, name, and address) that you submit to the bank records. Some banks require a customer verification before they will release the information. I know because checks unlimited will not print my checks until I call their customer service line and they three-way me with the bank. I have to verify my information with both of them...if it matches with what was submitted...and what is on file with the bank...then the bank rep ok's the information and the printing goes ahead.

There is a very, very, very slim chance that the "cheap checks" will cause problems at the bank.

"Save a few bucks"...is a laugh. I paid $4.95 for a box of checks that I wanted with the picture I wanted on it. The bank didn't carry the checks I wanted and even then...their STARTER box (with plain checks) was over $20. In my mind, that's not a "few bucks". I've also used checks unlimited and artistic checks for 11 years now and I have NEVER ONCE had a problem.

I am glad you haven't had any issues.

Not all check printing is the same. I have seen alot of crazy situations come across my desk. Like I said this is just a heads up so people are aware.

I will just say what I do.

I order checks from the bank i am going thru and use them. If anything happens it is alot easier to trace. For rent I use cashier checks because it leaves a notation on the account for easier cross reference if a landlord says i didnt pay it. All I have to do is pull out previous statements instead of ordering or printing out check copies.

Money orders are fine. Just be aware if there is an issue with money orders the tracing will be thru another company too. Tracing with a money order company usually costs over $20 per money order. If I am mailing something out I dont use money orders for this reason.

I am very particular about what i use and for what. I like to keep hassle to a minimum in case anything does happen.

One idea is to see what your banks requirement for a 'select' or 'premium' or whatever term they use checking account. I have a 'select' checking account at my bank and got my first 100 checks for free and it's not bad for every 250 more (10 bucks I think). They are plain, but I get three choices of back round colors.

Are you a costco member? You could order 2 boxes for ten bucks.
