    Default Hawaii?

So the foreclosure auction on the house is set for September 21st, and we have to be out a couple days before that. Chances are R and I will get an apartment in Tucson and save up until December. Then during winter break he said he would fly to Hawaii to start checking out prices, jobs, and where we would live. He is really adamant about this because he has always wanted to live there after experiencing it through multiple business trips. While I'm not too wild about leaving somewhere I've called home for 12 years, I think it might be nice.

So I ask those of you who know:

What's it like living there? He might have a job opportunity in Oahu....

What's the situation between the locals and non locals? Are they really unfriendly towards us NL, or are they pretty nice?

    How are the schools there?

    Anything else?

    (Milea.... comments? )

I've never lived there, but visited a few times, and thought about moving there. Cost of living is REALLY expensive. Gas was also even more outrageous than it is here. Other than that, I'm not much help, it is beautiful though.

I thought about living there as well but I am afraid I will get that being land locked fever . Most of the people who I knew lived there would get the same way its such a small place .
Most things cost more there like Gas was mentioned but really you dont have to drive very far to get most places .
I have a lot on the Big Island and maybe will build one day but it is costly .
But I say ,hey your young do it and experience it and if you don't like it move on to the next place.

    Re: Hawaii?

Where is your house located on Oahu, CF? It all depends on what part of the island you will be living on as far as local behavior goes. I, myself, being half asian, pass as a local, so I've never had any problems. The islands are also a big part of my identity...so most of the things I tell you will be coming from a local's perspective.

Hawaii is very different for statesiders. It has a mixture of overseas and a mainland feel to it. The cost of living is pretty high...maybe a little bit higher than California.

I, myself, loved every minute of living there, because of the island life and culture. It wasn't just "a vacation" for me, like it is to most americans.

The locals are just protective of their land because of the tourist industry. They take "Haoles" as invaders of their perfect beaches, waters, and island overall. Like I said, it really depends on where you will be living.

If you live around Honolulu/Waikiki...it's not too bad because the locals are used to seeing "Haoles" and tourists everywhere...(not being racist when I use this term...the term is used pretty openly even by the local white people from Hawaii).

If you live close to a miltary base (and there are several of them, the big ones being; Hickam AFB, Schoffield Barracks, Kaneohe Marine Base, or Pearl Harbor NAS)...it's not too bad, either because of the soldiers that live around the area.

The North Shore is COMPLETELY different, though!!! I considered this part of the island, "Real Hawaii." The shrimp farmers live out there and The Polynesian Cultural Center is out there, too. Also, the real HARDCORE LOCALS!!! It is ultimate paradise on the North Shore...truly Hawaiian!

The Wai'anae area, which is the western part of Oahu is very dry, and considered "Ghetto Hawaii" to a lot of islanders. I would go out to that part of the island anyway, cuz, once again, I'm considered a local girl. That part of the island is considered unsafe to Haoles, I guess. There's lots of stories about Haoles getting beaten and robbed out there...but what part of a place doesn't have an area like that???

    AAAAAHHHHHH...you're making me homesick, CF!!!!!!!!!!

Like I said everthing I will tell you will pretty much be from a local's perspective. A lot of my full white and american friends had mixed feelings about it, completely loved it, or fucking HATED it!

Traffic is really congested...I'll tell you that...I never had roadrage until I moved to Hawaii! Mainly because Oahu has almost 1 million people all clammed up on the island. There are no "shortcuts", either...you take the main roads on the island just like everybody else...so I barely drove after 3PM, and didn't go on the road till at least between 8-9PM!

I could go on and on....

Let me know where you're buying your house. If and when I decide to go back and live there I want to buy a house on Kaneohe Bay...and also have a house on The Big Island where realty is cheaper in the state.

    *gets back to praying*

Milea- we still live in Tucson. We are not in Hawaii yet, so no house in Oahu. And we will be renting for a while once we do get to Hawaii.

I've only visited there.. I went to Oahu. The North Shore was nice and secluded... but... Well, have you ever been to San Diego? It felt a lot like home to me (maybe it was because I was in Waikiki)... except more humid and the beaches are simply amazing. Cost of living is supposedly really high and there's a lot of poverty.

Do you know where you will be renting? I knew you weren't already there, silly! Well...you have plenty of time to get to studying about Hawaiian culture then!

Also...I mixed up some paragraphs on my post so it seemed like I was talking to you like you were living there already...hehe. All fixed now.

I lived in Hawaii for almost two years from age 10-12 and definatly want to move back once I get a large amount of mula saved. Anyways, I was definatly a minnority at school but completly respected the local ways and got along really well with most kids I met. I lived in Waikiki so maybe that is why, I didnt give it much thought when I was younger and I felt like just another Island girl! I lived with my granmas best friend and she had lived their for almost 20 yrs and knew the place well and the best memories of my life are in Hawaii. I do think some locals might try to take advantage of outsiders just because of how outsiders treat life over there and dont keep up all their values maybe, only some tho. I havent been there since 2000 tho so keep that in mind. you should check out some websites on the lifestyle and culture over there before you visit just so u will fully enjoy it and see if that is the kind of place u want to live. As for me, I wish I was living in Hawaii right now except I would like to live in Maui when I go back maybe

Nope, not yet. R has been talking to a small company out on Oahu, but nothing final. We're moving whether he has a job there or not.

Cool. Also...I left there in '05, and my friends that are still living there have told me that it's changed a lot since I've left.

One of my friends told me Donald Trump bought a whole bunch of real estate out there and Waikiki is now even more stacked with condo- buildings....GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Yep...I think I'll be heading to The Big Isle for my return instead!

I think you'll like it, though. You said you've lived in Germany before and the islanders are pretty much like foreigners and have a lifestyle of their very own. They have a laidback, I-don't-giva-shit-attitude like the Europeans do.

I like "I dont give a shit" attitudes and I love European demeanors. Yay Hawaii! Maybe we'll see each other next year?

Do the locals warm up to you if they figure out you're actually living there and not just a tourist?

Eh...once again...this depends. You have those friendly "Kama'aina" locals who will take you in as family, and then you have the close- minded ones who simply hate and want nothing to do with mainlanders. Their saying is, "We grew here, You flew here." Then you have the islanders that just don't give a shit and are laidback and get along with everybody. Once again...a lot depends on where you will be living. Also...a lot of "White Hawaiians" or other Hawaiians that came later to live there like you and your hubby are all over the island....they will always welcome you and most likely introduce you to their local friends.

It's expensive. Really, really expensive. There's a lot of unemployment and a lot of poverty.

When I was there, I bought this book, . I found it very helpful and informative, although I'm sure some of the price-specific info is out of date. I was completely smitten with Hawaii when I was a tourist there, but living there is a completely different life. I highly recommend the book.

Actually Yekh, I was doing some reading and the unemployment was only at 8%. Sure many of that is menial pay, but I'm going to school anyways.

I've also found that much of the information given to "haole" looking to move their is mostly biased.

ive lived in hawaii for 17 years (im 18 haha, so pretty much my whole life)
    and i loved it
    its expensive
    schools arent really great there

Mileia pretty much summed up a lot of it.
a lot of times i felt really close to my neightbors and friends because things like bbq's outside and potlucks are common.
maybe when u visit u should stay in the place where u are going to live, wikiki isnt all of it. as for me i lived in kapolei (oh and get used to weird street names)

you cannot own property in the standard sense on hawaii's islands (at least they still followed this system when i lived there as a child). everything is under term-leases that max out at 99 years. i may have the term wrong, but i remember pretty clearly that you couldn't really 'own' stuff, just have long terms on it, since it's all islands.

what everyone else said about the expensiveness and low salaries and traffic is true to my recollection as a military child there.

Thanks everyone. We're thinking either Maui or the Big Island, and Oahu as our last choice.

im new here but i couldnt help but no comment on this! hello!

my name is ashley n im born n raised on maui. as for the term lease miabella was talking about i havnt heard of that n we've owned our property for well over 100 years now. so i derno on that matter as for the local/tourists not getting along etc. we do like tourists etc. its just the attitude they bring with them that gets them hated. most locals will always hate the tourist for coming n acting like they own the place thats why alot of places you go people dont have anymore aloha cause they arnt recieving the same treatment. i know we complain all the time . yogibear is right its hella expensive! one "decent" apartment is atleast $1000 + here on maui it is anyways. n under $1000 n it makes it very difficult to live comfortably. its hard to find work, most people dont even make $1000 a month! its hella crowded, prices are going up cause everyone wants to move here, yes its a great thing sometimes but its said when the actual "hawaiians" cant afford to live here anymore n they have to live on beaches in tents or move to the mainland. its a tragedy its changed soooo much over the past 10 years its saddening. as far as schools go our education is decent i mean what can you really expect for being in the middle of nowhere?! haha.. if thats the case i highly recommed being in public school. private schools struggle education wise. i mean everywhere has its flawless dont let that scare you. its really beautiful here and if you find the right people it can be very enjoyable! its great the beaches are wonderful esp when you find the ones uncrowded! n yes alot of locals will take you in as there own child haha. its great n they will always be there n stick up for you when you need them. also being on maui its easier n more layed back but if you like the city n fastpaced life i highly recommend oahu cause it can get hella boring here. not to mention they have all the best events there! thats for my long winded post hope that helped a bit! good luck moving here n i hope you enjoy it as much as alot of people do!

    this site clarifies things.

hawaii has both leasehold 'ownership' and actually owning the land your house is on, and i didn't know about the second kind. that is actually pretty interesting to know.

I lived there for 2 years, for all of middle school. The first year was in Waikiki, which is a nice but way too much tourist stuff. Went to Washington Intermediate and didnt have much problems there. Yeah, I'm a Haole but I got along with the locals fine. The second year we moved to Aiea. Much different attitude there at the school but not so bad if you hung out with the other Haoles from McGrew Point and some of the locals from Pearl Ridge and Waipahu. In Aiea there were a lot of locals I got along fine with, and some I for sure did not, for nothing other than the fact that I was a Haole. Doesnt matter if the person is Tongan or Samoan without a drop of actual Hawaiian in them, they will still give a Haole shit. A lot aren't native themselves but they don't care. Hawaii is a beautiful place, the culture is amazing but it is really expensive. Just remember if your moving there and plan on having kids, if your a Haole, your kids will deal with a lot of prejudice in a whole lot of ways that they wouldnt if they were on the mainland. A Haole will always be at the bottom of the totem pole there. And adapt to the ways and slang of the island quickly, it'll make it easier for you. I remember my one friend Keoni, we were talking and I said something about being "white". He couldnt believe I said it...lol. Haole is how they term it and he acted like I was insulting myself when I said I was white.

And for the record, the most BEAUTIFUL babies I've ever seen in my life are part Haole and part Portuguese and or Hawaiian.
