Default How many times have you "retired" from dancing?

Myself, three or more times(hard to keep count anymore) over the past seven years since I started. Last time, this Valentine's Day, I was sure I was done for good. But after a 5 month hiatus, I found myself back onstage this past Thursday, and loving it once again. My sister-in-law, same thing - often "retires", always ends up back. For me, it's a love/hate relationship. There's times I am just sick and tired of it and can't imagine going back to work even for one more day. Then as soon as I quit, I remember all the reasons I adore the job, and you'd have to fight like hell to keep me away from it. I was just wondering if this is common to the industry, or if it's just me...

about 10 times before I finally 'stayed away' for good. It was just like the famous movie line 'Just when you think you're out, they pulllllll you back in!'.

I've retired once... I'm back at it now though for the summer.

Now what I'm really interested in is why you retired and what made you start dancing again. For me it was moving and beginning a new life with my bf, it was also making me depressed (had done it for 2 years). I started school so I'll be dancing for the summer to cover school costs for next term. I started back up because this way I only have to work two days a week, so I can enjoy the summer as well.

Three. Twice because I was too fat (I have an ED, my weight has a long history of going through wild fluctuations) and the last time partly out of guilt (mother) and partly because I'd realised that I'd never really been cut out for it, both in terms of temperament (lack of acting skills, extreme introversion) and in terms of grace (lack thereof).

I feel the exact same way about being introverted, feling guilty, and not being graceful! I really drains you when you're an introvert to constantly try to put on an act, I feel that mine never sounds genuine. Thank God that I have a regular for those nights when I just feel too shitty to work, and thank God that I'm only doing this for the summer.

    Are you currently retired Flckard?

Once... part of it was because of burn-out, part of it was because of my ex.

    I don't say retired. I say sabatical.
I'm on one right now, LOL.
    I'd say probably 3 or 4 times.
I think I'm pretty much finished with dancing, and have been for the past year or so...it's just hard to give it up. I hate dancing, I want out....but when I think about getting a real job, I think about what I'm giving up. The freedom, the money, the flexability....
    I'm in limbo right now.

I quit for a year for a guy I used to date, and I quit for 8 or 9 months when all the strip club laws in Nashville made it impossible to make money. So yeah, I quit twice, but I didn't want to either time.

I'm happily touring the country full time now, though.

Twice, for two years at a time. The first time, I was 26 and had some major health related surgery ( I had a huge fibroid taken out and it left a small cesarean like scar). I was very thin before surger. However, after, my tummy looked very bloated for months. This was in the ninties, so at 5'2" and 108lbs, I was given a warning at my home club that I would be fired if I didn't get back down to 100.

Luckily, I found an amazing bartending job, two blocks from where I lived.

Two years after that, I had a chance to dance in Cabo San Lucas. So I went to my home club, my tummy had gone down (finally) and danced twice a week to get in shape for Cabo. Best experience ever. This lasted six months. I figured that would be it.

Then a year and a half later, an actress I knew did a one woman show about her history of dancing. I was 30 and she was older than me and I found out she was STILL dancing! So, I thought, if she could do it, I may still have a chance. It was now 2001. I was so used to starving myself in the ninties. I remember walking into my girl's club to be shocked at all the curvy dancers that worked there. But it was a good thing! It was nice to not have the pressure of having to look like Kate Moss! (These days I am trying to make my ass bigger

Fast forward: Still doing it, still like it and making very consistent money.

I quit when I was 20.... I had started literally a week after my 18th birthday, and was just not able to deal with the job. I was freaked out by all these older men looking at me, trying to touch me.... I worked in a contact club and just didn't want to be doing it. I waitressed for about a year and then went back to dancing in an air dance club, and I loved it! Also this was in Chicago and my first club was in Wisconsin, so for the first time I was making serious money also.

I also quit last year at 24. I just needed a break. I had fallen into this pattern, which isn't neccessarily bad but.... I became really close friends with a lot of people at work, and I was working every day, more to socialize than anything else. My whole life became the club, and I just wasn't doing anything positive for myself. I needed to step back and focus on other things for a while.

The first time I quit was when I got engaged to a guy years ago and he didn't want me to do it anymore (even though he was the person who convinced me to start dancing in the first place). The second was due to having a baby - I really had no intention of going back. And the last time was due to complete and utter burnout. I have a very high anxiety level (thankfully I'm on meds now, which make dancing a hell of a lot funner and less stressful). I went back because my car got reposessed and I couldn't make it to my "real" job anymore. If I hadn't quit dancing, I would have had no problem paying the car payments, either. This time I'm dancing to save up to move to Washington, but I'll probably continue to dance for a while after I move, even though the commute will be a bitch, I don't exactly have marketable work experience in any other field...

I am on my 3rd retirement.(... They say the 3rd time is a charm?)

    Past Retirments:

May 2005 -I was done emotionally, but ended up returning only a month later because bills were not at "normal job" status.

November 2005 -I was still done emotionally, but ended up returning 3 months later because bills were STILL not at "normal job" status.

June 2006 -Bills are finally down to a level where they can be paid with the means of a normal job so I have been retired ever since.

I "quit" twice in the last 12 years. Both times lasted only a few months - what I really needed was a break because I was anxious to get back after a while. I no longer say when I'll quit or try to put any limit on it. At some point I figure I just won't go back anymore. I'm already tapering off and doing other things, making other plans, so eventually my dancing days will just phase out. I still like it alot, enough to keep at it a couple more years, if not more. Depends on what I'm doing with the rest of my life. When it happens, it happens.

Just the one time. I never really suffered from "burn-out" while I did it, but i had to quit when I did. I just kept running out of places to make good money cleanly without psycho management.

I still miss it sometimes though, I gotta admit.

I actually retired when I planned to. Now I had taken several breaks from dancing over the years, once for a year and a half, but return was always a possiblity. I danced part time a lot over the years as well to prevent burnout.

If everything you try is a sure thing, you aren't taking enough risks. If you never fail, you put a limit on the degree to which you can succeed. In short, the only way to win big is to risk losing

I'm supposedly "retired" - just modeling, trying to get into acting and running my website, photography business and online talk show (about exotic dancing and working as a cam girl). I'm itching to get back into dancing though.
