    Default Ebay noob, enlightenment needed.

Whats up guys, in light of the Transformers movie that recently came out. I stumbled upon a seller on Ebay selling Autobots/Deceptacons emblems. This morning i purchased a black autobot emblem from there. My question is i just created my Ebay account today just so that i could cop this emblem. Instead of bidding i just clicked the "buy now" button, the emblem cost $15 but became $18 cause of shipping. My question is whats the bidding for? Doesnt that mean the price of the item will go up? Also im assuming when sellers have alot of positive feedback then most likely their legit and wont shady you?
    Heres the item i bought:

Was it a Buy It Now with no other "bid price" above it, or just a Buy It Now auction?

If it's just a BIN auction, usually people do that so that they don't have to worry about losing their items for lower than they're willing to go, and many buyers prefer BINs to waiting up to 7 days for an item, or like me prefer not to participate in a potential bidding war.

If it was an auction with a start price AND a BIN option, same thing applies. The seller is really just giving you the chance to buy what you want right away if you're willing to pay more for the item than it might be if people bid on it or it could be a deal if the item would have been bidded higher than the BIN.

If the auction is one with a BIN and an auction start price for bidding, the BIN will disappear once the first bid has been placed, and now that item is only available for bidding only.

Some people are willing to pay a higher price and dont want to risk losing the auction/ So if the starting bid is .99...but the Buy it now is $15...the'd rather just pay the $15 now. Sure, they could have gotten it for $2...but they would also risk not getting it at all. I cant tell you how many auctions I've lost because someone outbid me at literally the last second.

I'll do the auction usually because, while I may REALLY want the item...I want it as cheap as possible and I'm willing to take the chance I'll lose it.

The seller can also put a reserve on it. Which means you can bid all you want...but if you never bid high enough to meet the reserve(say your final bid was $5 and the reserve is $15) you wont get the item. They dont have to sell if it doesnt meet the reserve price.

Everything on eBay is an auction. Hence the bidding. The sellers can list what they call a "reserve price", which is essentially what the bid must at least be equal to or greater before the item will actually be available to purchase. If the bids never get to the reserve, the item will not go to the highest bidder.

Some items have a "Buy it now" button, which is exactly what it sounds like. This process skips the bidding altogether. You immediately "win" the auction at the price the buy it now button lists, plus shipping and handling. Which as you learned you should always check out before buying.

When an item has Buy it now, you may still bid on the item. However then the buy it now option goes away I believe (though never actually done this personally). You take the risk of possibly paying more for the item than through the buy it now, though you may get lucky and get it cheaper.

It all depends on supply and demand really. Though buy it now is usually a good bet.

I can't recall, but reserve pricing might be more costly than BINs for the seller. I dunno, I haven't sold in a while. I think reserve pricing is only good for high dollar items. That Transformers badge for example: no. I really dislike reserves personally. It's cheaper(free, for the service, not setting up an ad, I know that costs money ) for the seller to just set the minimum price they are willing to accept as an opening bid rather than setting a reserve for a setup fee. Sure you will initially attract buyers to the low opening bid, but it's all fake when they open it up and see a reserve.

Oh, and another reason buyers do BINs is to win auctions and build up their ratings. This is good for your reputation, and also helps if you want to start selling, as it is really hard to sell if you have a low or poor rating. That's why it's recommended buy the Seller's Central forum on eBay to buy a bunch of BIN/ regular auctions at $0.01 or $0.99, pay, and get feedback. Get's good feedback.

All is good information . Yes watch the shipping costs I have seen some items where the shipping cost more then the product . Also some of the Real Estate auctions are a joke because you are sometimes bidding on the down payment on a property ( creative marketing ) . Just read everything about the product before you bid .
