Default Hair dying experts, some advice?

When I was seventeen I dyed my blonde hair this bright, crazy red. It faded and faded, and then I put some blonde dye on top of it long time later, and eventually it became this beautiful, amazing strawberry blonde colour. It was shiny, golden hair with just the slightest tinge of red. I have never had so many compliments from so many people in my life as I did for that tenuous colour of hair (they also thought it looked natural, and it suited me much better than the overpowering red). I didn't know how to keep it, and eventually it just faded back to blonde.

The thing is, I know it's such a fine line between that pretty colour and an ugly orange colour. I wish I could find a picture of it...you probably can imagine what I mean. Just mostly blonde, and slightly red. I find the ordinary blonde just gets dull and common and I get so bored with it. But then I try to deviate and get terrible results. However, I know this colour suits me. My best friend doesn't like my hair this light blonde either, and told me recently she liked my hair best as that strawberry blonde colour.

So: is that a possibility, that colour? I know how hard reds are to maintain. What's the likelihood of a professional to get that colour, and what are the odds of screwing it up? I'm tempted, but I wonder if it's worth the headache. I'd also like it because I'm sick of tanning, and I think a cute reddish blonde would look better with pale skin than regular light blonde does (that tends to get washed out looking, I find). Thanks!

It's certainly possible to obtain, and will most likely last longer if it's a dye just for that shade...not accidentally develope dlike you did. Just bring in a picture, and also ask to see the color board and pick the shade closest to reinforce what you want.

However, no matter how good the dye or the colorist is, any shade of red hair WILL fade. To minimize, fading, wash your hair as sparingly as possible. Use minimal products containing alcohol, as the promotes dryness and color fading. Yu may also want to experiment with red shampoos. No, not that John Frieda or Pantene crap...they do NOTHING to help color. But stores like Sally's have color shampoos that deposit color (John frieda and pantene products do not) which wuld keep that red tinge in your hair longer. I wouldnt use them too often, but maybe once or twice a week,t o enhance your shade.

At-home glazing treatments or semi-permanent colors will also be an excellent method of maintaining your shade.

You can actually make your own by mixing baby shampoo and Manic Panic or something along those lines together. You don't need to add a lot to the shampoo and letting the shampoo sit in your hair for a longer length of time will result in a more pronounced color addition.

I wore mine a copper color for years and it was crazy hard to keep up. Once I discovered how to make my own color wash shampoo it was much easier.

Is this along the lines of what you're talking about?

Yes, that's close. Maybe just a slightest touch more red, but definitely the right idea.

Def not that hard for a colorist to do... I think pale strawberry blondes look best when they're multi-deminsional so talk to your colorist about incorporating LOTS of foils of deeper, honeyed red lowlights and pale, warm gold highlights with a light strawberry blonde base. I think that doing a straight strawberry blonde without hi's and low's just looks flat and artificial.

Yeah, upkeep for red is a bitch because of fading... Definately use a color safe shampoo and conditioner and alternate with color depositing shampoos.
