At midnight
excitedness!
I'M doing a midnight showing too! I'm actually helping a friend to surprise his 9 year-old daughter. She'll go to bed as per usual, and then we wake her up a few hours later & take her to the midnight showing. He figures, hey, it's summer vacation, why not?
Hee hee, she's going to lose her MIND with excitement. And she can tell all her friends about it tomorrow! I bet she remembers this her whole life.![]()

Wheeeeeeeee! I'm going, too! Yay! I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOO excited! It's my (early) graduation present from my best friend!
*Squeeeeeeee*
So am I!!! And at the midnight release, people get dressed up like the characters. Last time, someone got dressed up as Spiderman with a cape and lightsaber complete with wolverine claws.... for a Harry Potter premier!!! (??)

It was sooooooooooooooo good! I loved it!
There were some major differences between the book and movie, but I loved how much darker this movie was. Yep....awesome.

Got to see it @ 6 PM today.
(Oh the perks of working @ EA!)
(although, personally, I'd have preferred EA gotten an advance screening of "The Simpsons" later this month)
All that said... enjoyable!

"In life, we DO a lot in order to accomplish mundane trivial things before we die, but it is in death and after death in memories that we will truly live, because it is in the level of care and detail that a person paints of us with stories from their memories and experiences with us that give us meaning."
Thumbs up from me! I thought the wizard battles in the Hall of Mysteries at the end were EXCELLENT. In the past I was always a little irritated that the battles consisted of Point Wand, Say Magic Word. Wait For Your Opponent To Do the Same. Continue Taking Turns. But these battles finally really showed the power of the magic they're using, and the struggle the fighters feel. Voldemort was much more menacing this time around, too!
I loved the Order themselves, though we got to see too little of them (realize things simply had to be cut; it's a long enough movie as it is). Tonks in particular, really well executed. Thought the new additions to the cast were fantastic in general! Luna, who annoyed me just a tad in the book, was so lovable!
And Dumbledore's Army? RULED.

So... um... anyone else think it was excessively patchy? The time frame jumped a great deal. I mean, it was nice to see how it played out on the big screen, rather than my own mental images, but this one underwhelmed me.

Yeah, but I guess they had to do what they had to in order to keep the run time down.
I liked the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort, though. It was very much like I'd pictured it in my mind.
I loved it..., excpet for the scene withHarry's dad, the flashback!! It was supposed to hacve DIALOGUE! And show CHARACTER DEVELOPEMENT! And Lilly was supposed to show up and save Snape!! Grrr.... so ticked off.
But other than that, there was a lot of really funny moments and I think that this was the best movie yet.

The only thing that I didn't like was Dumbledore's line "Don't you kids have studying to do?" That was totally un-Dumbledore-ish. Eveything else was lovely! I truly can't believe what a difference changing the screenwriter made. Unfortunately the old one is coming back for HBP.

I'm not seeign teh movie-I prefer to wait for the book. i seriously haven't liked any of the movies, although i enjoy the music. The music could make this one worth seeing as I hear they barely touched the classic John Williams themes.
i WILL be at the midnight parties for the BOOK though.

I LOVE harry potter! I once dressed up as a hypogriph for halloween... And i have a tshirt thats my "geek cred" shirt, as its from the ORIGINAL WB line, right after JK sold the merch rights, but before any of the movies had been casted, let alone released.
The girl i sat next to in the theatre was wearing one of the school robes.
then a lot of people wore fan tshirts.
there were a lot of brits there for the late night showing in munich, hehe =)

isaw this movie with my father, and while we normally do the midnight showing the night it comes out we waited to the following day to do a matinee. we both agreed that this was the best movie of the series, and it set up the next one perfectly. plus the fight scene was fantastic! i thought dolores umbridge was cast so PERFECT for the role. two thumbs up from me for sure.
Love it!
I agree with this. I went with a hardcore fan of the books and movies like myself, my sister who is just reading the books now always liked the movies, and my bf who never read the books..so from all of our perspectives they definetly dropped the ball this time with the movie on providing details. And I was disappointed with the Sirius scene because in the book it brought me to tears and in the movie it was just like wham bam thank you mam bye. It was still good just to get in my HP fix until the book can come out, but I was not amazed by this one.
I just saw the movie today. I loved it, especially when compared to the last one. It felt a bit rushed and they left a lot out, but given the length of the book that was unavoidable. I think if I didn't know the book so well I'd have been lost, but I did enjoy it. When I saw the trailer, I didn't approve of the Umbridge casting. After seeing the movie, I stand corrected. She wasn't what I had pictured but she was PERFECT. She and Bellatrix Lestrange (another casting choice I had questioned) were excellent. Tonks was also terrific; I wish we could've seen more of her.
I can see why Emma Watson went on and on about how much she loved this director. She definitely delivered the best performance, to the extent that I would say this was first and foremost Hermione's movie.
All in all, I enjoyed it. I'll probably go see it again with K when I get back to L.A.
I just got done watching this documentary! Such an AMAZING Film... I mean, who knew Gorillas, would learn to enjoy the hobby of potting plants.
You know, you think about it, this one Gorilla, (there is a scene where he's potting the DumbleDore Ficus (found only in this part of South America) which is consider to be on the brink of extinction, could be the last hope for this strain of ficus!
OH! And the scene where he hands the Sirius flower to the human who was monitoring them in the little Voldemort Pot was sooooo cute.
This little guy truly had a heart of gold! A plus! Go see it!
People are not ruled by their memories.
I do think there was probably too much story for a movie. It really needed a mini series. But... I also thought there were weird choices. Like - I got using Cho as the "traitor" rather than her friend. I mean, the friend is too much padding and stuff, but I thought "What a weird choice" when at the end they do a whole "but it wasn't her fault" and vitiate the whole betrayal. It's like, while I can see that the WHO betrays them isn't important, it is important that there is a real betrayal; you can't just take it back afterwards. At the end, during Harry's confrontation with Bellatrix - same thing. Like I get that you may be trying to communicate a whole lot with Voldemort "tempting" Harry to use the curse, so I can let the plot deviation go. But I think there is a real, huge, big problem in having Harry withstand; (spoiler - mouse over) I mean, I thought the whole point was that he gave in, and now we have no build up for the moment where he uses the death curse in book/movie 6.
I also thought the director dropped the ball in terms of, you know... what the book was about. Book 5, more than any other, was about caste systems. That's why, for example, you have Umbridge with her hate on for half-breeds and non-humans. That's why you have these hugely symbolic golden statutes in the Ministry of Magic (which didn't do anything, by the way - I was very disappointed with that). That's why you have Kreacher and his role in Sirius's death. And that is, of course, why you have the centaurs. I don't see the point in keeping Kreacher if he doesn't... do anything. And I thought the choices made with the centaurs were... terrible. Like they were non-verbal. How could the centaurs be non-verbal? They could have at least said things while attacking her. The way it was constructed in the movie is looking like mindless violence, which COMPLETELY undermines the entire story of the Order of the Phoenix. And for that matter - Luna. She didn't DO anything. Her character served no purpose, and I thought they constructed her SO poorly. Like, she was meant to be this hardcore conspiracy nut with no internal censor and a very flat perception of the world - like all that is inside is outside - "He can be quite funny. But rather mean at times as well" and "I would LOVE to go as friends. Is that why you shaved your eyebrow? Should I do mine too?" I thought they kind of played her as borderline retarded. Like if time was the concern they could have left the centaurs out entirely - they didn't do anything they were meant to do. Same with Kreacher, same with Luna. With a couple of exceptions - like I thought it was very significant that they left out Harry's trying again to use the Cruciatus curse and his projection of blame onto Snape for Sirius's death AND the fact that he didn't just see Snape's memory while in a lesson, but deliberately invaded his mind - I thought they developed Harry quite well, as well as Ron and Hermione. I thought they did a lovely job with Umbridge, although I thought they could have made her sadism a little more... lascivious. Like in the book you have her licking her lips in a sexual manner while contemplating using chains on the students.
I tried to be understanding, I really did - like there is likely just too much story and development there to go into one movie. But some of the choices were just... weird. Finally - can I say that I was so disappointed not to see Fred and George's swamp?
ETA - oh, oh - I forgot. Can I say... I think they did Dumbledore ALL WRONG? I mean, I get that Dumbledore's fallibility, fear and second thoughts are catching up with him; but that should be an UNDERTONE. He's still in the game, and he is all about the "poker face". He shouldn't be giving so much away all the time. I mean, that is part of what makes him so intimidating - that you think he's losing, that he has no recourse, but you're still like "There is something up that sleeve... what the hell is it? What is he sitting on?" - even if it's not true that is definitely how he presents himself. With an air of calm expectation. All his pacing and worrying should be in his damn office. Not out there in front of everyone.

^^^^^Agreed.
One more thing! They never explain why the dementors attacked Harry. WTF?? I mean, I know from the book, but what about all the people who haven't/won't read the book?

Yeah, I had no idea why there were out there. Haven't read the books.
And now parts of the Sixth Chapter are ruined as well for me.![]()
Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.
Guy #2: Dude, I'd hit that so hard whoever could pull me out would become the King of England.
As we left the theatre we were joking that for the 6th movie they would have to have a Star Wars style back story thing scrolling over. We decided that animated featurettes a la The Matrix would be even better. Fucking Rage Against the Machine all leading up to Harry, Hermione and Ron flourishing wands. Awesome. Like Fred and George too - it's like they just dropped out of school... while you might not blame them, you have no information that they had, you know, a plan.
DJ - I'm so sorry! I'm putting in a spoiler warning right now. I'm so sorry.
