So the job search is over!!...yayy!
So I ditched efforts toward scoring another nannying gig and looked into jobs pertaining to a career pertaining to travel and/or writing, since those are my passions. With a stroke of luck (finally!!) I was hired as a receptionist at a travel agency. All business is done over the phone so the office seems super-laid back and very casual, and the people that work there seem young, hip, and kinda dorky like myself, which i LOVE! Although I am only a receptionist, I got a good starting salary and I figure it is a chance to get my foot in the door.
So here's the catch: First I was thrilled but slowly I am becoming more and more nervous and doubting my ability to do this job well. I have NEVER done an 8:30am-5:30pm M-F job. Stripping allowed me 6 years of staying up til 2am, sleeping til noon, having days to be lazy, and working three/four nights a week. Now I'll be going to sleep at 10pm, waking up at 6am, working alllll day, having 3 hours to do my own thing, then forcing myself to go to bed early to do the same thing allll over again.
Any tips from people who have survived the adjustment mentioned above?
My second fear is that I am afraid I am going to let my co-workers down, piss them off, screw up, piss off a client, etc because it takes me a LONG time to learn new things. They know I don't really have any other formal office training, so they are going to have to teach me everything about muli-line phones, faxes, invoices, etc. I'm so nervous I am going to screw something up and everyone will think I am dumb. I like these people and want to remain on their good side..
I REALLY want to do well at this. It is such a severe change in so many ways so any tips/advice or stories of your own on how you successfully made a similar adjustment would be GREATLY appreciated!
