Default Bronze & Smoky Tutorial (pic heavy!)

    Bronze & Smoky Tutorial

Please excuse the frizzy hair (damn humidity) and the giant pimple on my chin. Oh well, what can ya do?? Anyway, here is my tutorial for bronze smoked eyes. I like this for when I don’t want all-out black, but still want some drama. I love this look, it reminds me of Nicole Sherzinger, the lead singer of PCD. The blending technique used in this tutorial can be used for any family of colors, although I cannot take credit for it. I originally learned it from Olivebuttercup on specktra and it is one my favorite techniques. I will explain in great depth when we get to it.

    You will need:

    Eyes:
    An eyeshadow base (MAC Stilife)
A beigy-gold shadow (Emani #104 Gold Rush) (you can use a more yellow-gold if you like, but I prefer this shade of gold)
A black eyeshadow (MAC Black Tied)
A deep brown shadow (MAC Mulch)
    A bronze shadow (MAC Bronze)
A highlight color (MAC Arena and Shroom)
    A brow color (MAC Brun)
Black eyeliner (MUFE Aqua Line in Matte Black)
False lashes (not pictured, some drug store ones)
    Lash glue (Duo clear)
    Black mascara (Rimmel Volume Lash)

    Face:
    A face primer (MUFE #4 – Apricot)
A concealer (MAC Studio Finish NW30)
    A foundation/base (MUFE Face & Body #6)
A loose powder (MAC Loose Blot in Medium Dark)
A contouring powder (MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Dark)
    A blush (MAC Afterdusk)
    An all-over bronzer (MAC Golden)
    A highlight powder (MAC Belightful)

    Lips:
    A pinky-cinammon lipliner (MAC Spice)
A sheer gold lip gloss (MAC Elaborate lipglass)

    Brushes:
A big soft powder brush (MAC 187)
    A blush brush (MAC 116)
    An angle blush brush (Sephora)
    A large shadow brush (Sephora)
A fluffy blending brush (MAC 187
A precise “pencil” brush (MAC 219)
An angle brush for eyes (MAC 266 and Sephora)
    A lash/brow brush (Annabelle)

Start with a clean moisturized face. Groom your brows and apply some lip balm now so your lips will be nice and smooth later. Grab your eye base of choice. I’m using MAC Paint in Stilife. Apply evenly all over the lid. I use my fingers.

Now you will need your gold shadow (Emani #104 Gold Rush) and fluffy shadow brush (MAC 217)

Apply from the inner corner to the middle of your lid (kinda hard to see I know)

Pick up some black shadow (MAC Black Tied) with your most precise crease brush (MAC 219).

Apply a line from the outer third out. The outer third will start where the middle of your lid ends. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Now draw a line from the end of that point up towards the crease.

Continuing with the black shadow – start at the point where those two lines we just made connect. We are going to fill in the outer corner with black shadow and blend it into the crease a bit. Sorry this pic is a bit blurry. You may take the black shadow as far into the crease as you like.

This is what it should look like (a little scary at the moment, but don’t worry, it will all come together)

Load up your fluffy brush (I’m re-using the 217) with some Mulch or your deep brown shadow of choice

Apply along the “seam” of where the gold and black meet in the middle of your lid. Use the brown the blend them together.

This is what it looks like:

Now load up the fluffy brush with some pretty bronze shadow (MAC Bronze).

Apply all over – over the black, the brown, and the gold, except for the tiniest bit on the inner corner. This will give us varying shades of bronze (light to dark) and blend everything together fairly easily. If you want to keep it dark, apply less at the outer corners.

Still looks a bit scary, but will look great in a minute, I promise.

Load up your large shadow brush with your brow color. I am using two. One of them to blend with the bronze (MAC Arena) and another to highlight the brow a tiny bit (MAC Shroom). You can use one color if you wish, this works better for my eyes. Start with Arena:

Apply from the seam of the bronze shadow to the brow. Blend well with the bronze.

    All nice and blended

Now pick up some Shroom (or whatever highlight color you choose) and apply just under the brow. I have really large eyelids so this is why I use two colors.

    All the shadow blended together.

Time for brows. Fill your brows in with whatever you prefer. I am using MAC Brun shadow with the 266 brush and using a brow brush to blend them.

Now pick up some more black shadow (Black Tied) with an angle brush to line underneath. If you want it to look more natural, you can use the dark brown, but I prefer the black.

Line underneath your eyes, making a cat-eye shape and blending into the shape we created earlier.

Now line along your upper eye and inner rim with a black eye liner. I am using MUFE’s Aqua Eyes in Matte Black. (I still love my fluidline, but this is quick, easy, and portable.) This is what it should look like now

Almost done with the eyes! Apply some Duo lash glue along your false eyelashes. Wait about 1 minute for the glue to become “tacky”. I like to apply with my fingers, but if you have fake nails you’ll probably need tweezers. I steady my elbows on the table and apply them first in the middle, then adjusting the sides. Keep your tweezers close by for adjusting!

    Apply some mascara.

And we’re done with the eyes!

Here is an eye diagram of all the eye shadows. Thank my boyfriend for this, I mad him do it!

Now we’re gonna squeeze some foundation primer on our fingers and apply to the face. I’m using MUFE’s, which is great. This will help your makeup last waaaay longer and keep the shinies away. This will also help you achieve that perfect skin look that is so hard to get!!!

Pick up some concealor and apply to any imperfections (dark circles, blemishes, etc).

Now foundation time. I love MUFE’s Face & Body #6. I usually use a foundation brush, but I like using a sponge with this stuff.

Grab some loose powder (MAC Loose Blot) and apply with a soft fluffy face brush (MAC 187) in a circular, “buffing” motion. (my flash is reflecting some light here, I’m not shiny at all).

Let’s contour our cheekbones! Pick up some powder or bronzer (MAC MSF Natural Dark) a few shades darker than your skin tone with an angled blush brush (Sephora)

Make the fishy face. Start in the hollows and sweep the color towards your hairline. Follow your natural jaw line.

This is what it looks like.

Grab some blush (MAC Afterdusk) with a fluffy blush brush (MAC 116). Apply along the cheekbone above the bronzer we applied and on the apple of your cheek.

    Unblended

    Blended.

Now we’ll blend it all together with some bronzer. I am using MAC Golden with the 187 again.

Apply all over in a circular motion. This is where we are now.

Now we highlight the cheekbones. Pick up some highlight powder (MAC Belightful) with the tip of your angle blush brush.

Apply along the tops of your cheekbones

Now line your lips and fill them in with Spice (or any warm nude lip pencil).

Apply Elaborate lipglass (or any sheer gold lip gloss) on top

    Make a sexy pose…

    Done!

The eye shadow blending technique used in this tutorial is great for any family of colors. It’s essentially using a middle color to blend a lighter and darker one. I’ll add a few pics tomorrow showing how to do it with silver and black. Kaylinn, this is the same technique I used on you when I did your eyes. It may look a bit scary at first, but will balance out once you do your face. If you have any questions or I’m not clear in any of my steps, let me know!!

ETA: Look for the silver version on page 3, post 54 of this thread!!

I like it too. It does have that edge without being too overly done.

    Excellent!

That is so fucking cool, the diagram your BF. Very helpful.

Wow, I never knew how the hell to contour cheek bones that way. I just used either a blush or a bronzer. Good shit LR, as usual!!

Oh, and what is the difference btw a foundation primer & regular foundation?

Thanks, I love it with the bronze colors. It does look scary at first, I was worried when I peeked, but it does all come together beautifully.

I'm going to try this tonight.

    Thanks!
