Yours for $225,000: a place to park...

Manhattan real estate agent Tom Postilio said there is a waiting list of seven or eight people hoping to pay $225,000 for one of five private parking spaces...

Property appraiser Miller Samuel estimates that the average parking space in the expensive neighborhoods of Manhattan now costs $165,019, or $1,100 per square foot.

My parents, who live in Queens, pay almost as much per month to park their car as I do to rent my half of the house I live in.

People sometimes ask me if I ever plan to move back to New York. Hahahaha.

Ahhhh Manhattan. There is a reason why I never lived there. Brooklyn was plenty good fer me.

If I were to live in Manhattan, I wouldn't even have a car. Not worth it with the traffice every where.

why are you so surprised ?
    i park in manhattan...
the parking spot i have costs my company about $1,000 a month
it's across the street from the dealership i work at
we sell lamborghini, ferrari, porsche, bentley , rolls royce, and a few other exotic brands

$225,000 to own a spot is cheap.. with the way commercial real estate is going in manhattan, that spot will be worth 300 within 18 months

    SK:

"So surprised" is an accurate summation!

I'm surprised that the high prices stem from "city rules" controlling new residential buildings in most of Manhattan that limit spots to 20% percent of the units. The limits have resulted in some condo buyers paying roughly as much per square foot for their car's home as for their own.

I smell rank profiteering wafting through the rarefied garages of Manhattan, don't you? Hopefully, you should enjoy increased traffic through your exotic car dealership from well-connected developers after parking space prices move beyond the $300K mark...

There's a decent concentration of wealth--and exotic car dealerships--in certain areas of Los Angeles, but I've yet to hear of parking spaces that command $225K...

    1. it's NYC.
    2. it's somewhat typical (ime) of big name cities with limited space, e.g. tokyo, hong kong, paris, etc.

    is it outrageous? sure.

but that doesn't mean the asking price isn't valid. there's always some rich moron willing to pay it otherwise the price would drop. more power to the smart seller imho.

Why would anyone want to own a car in Manhattan? Seems like it would be more hassle than it's worth.

Yeah, I always wondered that too. I mean, if you've got the $200,000 to blow on a parking spot, why not hire a car service and not have to worry about owning a car?

status, bragging rights, ego, stupidity, call it what you will.

i liken it to the lohan/hilton dwi-thing. why not get a chauffeur or service? dumases.

then again, the city does make some people do stupid things. for instance, i have one friend who's been renting in manhattan since college (15-years now), same crappy little place but with a big price tag.

    only for the weekends.

he lives and works in nj, just across the river in Alpine and Closter (jersey people will realize the even greater idiocy of that comparison, i.e. they're very posh places).

true, he's single and it's much to do with the dating scene of the city but get a frickin' hotel room every weekend then! it's cheaper and cleaner! ideeot.

but i don't really mind (or care about) the lifestyle of manhattan so much as i just generally don't like the people of manhattan (and yes, i have lived in manhattan for years in the past and i'm a native ny'er so it's not a jealous bias or anything). but again, if someone's dumb enough to live and pay the rates, who am i to lambast the seller/renter. it's people like my friend(s) who determine the worthiness of the whole stupid thing.

Hey, anyone read that book Richistan yet? It's about today's new wealthy and how they have created their own country. It was fantastic...and explained a lot.
