Does anyone know if you need a passport yet to get into Canada from the U.S.? I was thinking about making a trip to Montreal in August with a few friends and I had heard that soon you were going to need a passport to cross the border.

If you are travelling by air then yes. If you will be travelling by car or taking a boat a passport won't be required. However this will change when the new law comes in to effect in January 2008.

i'd suggest you get one anyways.
if you don't need one to get into canada is one thing.
coming back into the US is something else. shouldn't be a problem but i just believe in being prepared.

I know for a short while they were allowing people into Canada, Mexico and certain islands without one because of how behind they were issuing them. I am not sure if they went back to it being madatory or not.

no it is not manditory, but like others have said, I suggest you get one. It is about $100, and a very good piece of ID to have. If you are road tripping it to Canada, then make sure you bring a birth certificate and driver's lic.

at the moment, Mexico, Canada and the USA are still working under an existing 'automatic visitors visa' treaty for all forms of cross-border travel EXCEPT air. This treaty only requires a valid gov't ID with picture (i.e. drivers license) plus a copy of a birth certificate to 'prove' your citizenship (remember in many states ANYBODY can obtain a driver's license, even illegal aliens). If you are road tripping it to Canada, then make sure you bring a birth certificate and driver's lic.
However, as of January 1, 2008, the 'automatic visitors visa' treaty is being thrown out the window. As a result, Mexican, US and Canadian citizens crossing each other's borders will no longer be treated any differently than citizens of China, Syria or Venezuela crossing the same borders - i.e. a passport being absolutely necessary plus a mandatory check of the security database.
Arguably, the reason that the 'automatic visitors visa' treaty had to be thrown out the window is that 'fake' Mexican ID's are available just about anywhere in Mexico to just about anybody at a very low cost, plus Canada has issued a large number of resident alien visas to potentially threatening middle easterners (meaning that they can easily obtain Canadian drivers licenses and fake a Canadian birth certificate and thus gain easy entry into the USA ).

^^^ yup, you are correct that the incredible backlog in requests for new US passports has now postponed the effective date of passports being required for land or water travel across the border to June 1st 2009.
In reality, you will not have a problem crossing from the US into Canada. The probability is much higher that you will encounter problems when you attempt to return to the US !
I paid an extra $100 and got mine in 4 four weeks. Just get it, it's worth it! What if you meet some gorgeous rich guy and he wants to take you to the Bahamas for a week?! You'll wish you had it!
