    Default Wisdom Teeth

I haven't posted in a week or so because--lucky me--I have laid up in bed with a badly infected and impacted wisdom tooth. I have never been to the dentist in my life and my first visit was a few days ago where they basically gave me and exam, some meds and a date on monday to get my molars extracted.

I'm terrified but excited---this tooth hurts so bad that I'm actually looking forward to getting it over with.

Can anyone relate their experiences with getting wisdom (or any) tooth removed? I want to have an idea of what to expect, I guess. Thanks ladies.

Cool My other worry--and this is so, so stupid--as that they will give me laughing gas or something such (never had it before) and I will start saying every stupid thing that comes out of my mouth and possibly pissing off people around me or letting out secrets.... dumb, I know.

I had oral surgery last year and was knocked out for it by oral sedation. It was easier and less painful than a teeth cleaning imo. I didn't have wisdom teeth pulled out since I'm missing them (as well as most of my 12 year molars). I had to get 4 molars pulled, another 12 year molar had to be pulled from on top of one of those because it fused to the bone and wasn't going to come down and another had to have a chain attached to it while it was in the bone to try and pull it down. I also had two screws and some bone preserving material packed into the sockets on my lower jaw. (Sorry---quite a mouthful there, lame pun intended)

They gave me a Halcion tablet to take an hour before I arrived. It was a pretty cool high and I didn't even notice the IV going in my arm or the laughing gas until it was too late. I woke up at home about 6 hours later and don't remember a thing. I was told I didn't talk at all. I was warned that since it as only oral sedation (no anesthesiologist) that I could wake up or "coast through" the surgery but I wouldn't feel anything.

My youngest brother had a different reaction though. I guess he became quite chatty before he knocked out and started divulging secrets about him and his gf with my parents still in the room. I think a nurse escorted them out before he embarassed himself too badly (Its just done in the surgeons office so they let relatives come with you into the room until you are fully out).

The swelling was mild because I managed to keep my head elevated. I was puffy for maybe 3 days and only needed 2 of the 10 codeine tablets they gave me.

I had my wisdom teeth removed. The procedure itself was fine. Got some gas, then and Iv to put me out. I remember floating out of the dentist office.

My hell was that they did not stich shut the hole, but they packed them.
So when I had to go back a week later to have the packing changed, it was the worst pain of my life. I nearly passed out. But I think most of the time, they stitch shut the holes, so you won't have to worry about that.
I did get Vicoden for the pain, but I wasn't in any pain to need it, and being a broke 17 year old, I sold the pills to my friends.

Your mouth is jacked open pretty wide - not conducive to talking. My dentist is very into pain management - he uses gas to give me fillings. When I got my teeth removed he gave me an oral sedative, which made me forget everything pretty good, but I must have been awake because I move from his office into the dentist chair. The problem being that he is a very big, strong man, and I have a very small mouth and whenever I go to the dentist I wind up with bruising on my lower face and cracks at the corners of my mouth from him gripping and opening. But I had so many painkillers, there was no pain, and ibuprofen to prevent swelling. I walked out, leaning on a friend insisting that I felt fine and that if I felt like it, I could operate any heavy machinery that happened to be in the area.

I had two wisdom teeth pulled, but they were erupted so all they had to do was pull them. I was fine the next day. When I was in high school my then-boyfriend had impacted wisdom teeth cut out, and he was laid up drooling blood for about a week.

You don't want to hear about my experience but here goes anyways LOL . I had four impacted wisdom teeth pulled . They knocked me out but the problem was I wouldn't quit bleeding so I had to stay in the hospital overnight . It really wasn't that bad though , I ate soup for about 4-5 days and then to something a bit more solid and had no problems after that . That was four at once though and they usually don't do all at once . Good luck and you will be much happier in the end .

I had all 4 cut out. They put me under. It was fine. Apparently I told me friend I loved him right before I passed out, but that was all I had time to say. Poor boy, gave him some hope, when I was using him for a ride home and he was the only person willing to wait in a dental office for 2 hours.

By the evening I was fine and most of the swelling was gone. Oral surgeon gave me lortabs and Vioxx (this was before the big Vioxx lawsuits). I did get a "dry socket" a few days later though. It was either from smoking a cig, sucking dick, or a combination of both.

They had to re-pack that twice and it really hurt to pack some clove smelling shit into an exposed nerve. But it was very quick pain. Don't smoke, suck on a straw, or suck dick for 2 weeks after and your risk is very low.

I had mine removed 5 years ago. I was pretty nervous while I was waiting to get put under. But after they did it & I woke up I was really happy on that high. I kept telling my mother (who took me) how beautiful she was. Then when I went back for the follow up the dentist asked me why I wasn't all happy go lucky & laughing. I responded that I wasn't on drugs this time.

I'm scared shitless. Three of mine have 'surfaced' and two are impacted and NEED to be taken out. I've been going to the same dentist forever and don't trust anyone else. He only uses novicain (sp?). He doesn't use gas or put you out... But I won't go to anyone else, so I'm still trying to work up the nerve...

    GOOD LUCK!!!!

My boss and I were just discussing this. He didn't get put out either. The moment you hear the CRUNCH of them breaking your teeth, you'll wish you were under!

I had all 4 of mine out at once about 6 years ago. They gave me laughing gas before the IV as I had never had an IV before and I was nervous. They asked me some questions about school and I started laughing cause I couldn't remember, then they stuck in the IV. 10 seconds later I was out.

When I woke up, I thought they hadn't done the surgery cause it seemed like no time had gone by. I was a little dizzy but that's all, not much pain. I threw up on the way home but my recovery was really easy. I ate mashed potatoes and pudding for 2 or 3 days and then I was ok. I only had to take one vicodin and saved the rest to take for fun later.

    I hope it goes well!
