Getting Hair Done By A Paul Mitchell Student??

So there is a Paul Mitchell Cosmetology school in my area and I heard that you can go and get cuts/color/etc done for a cheap price because the students are "practicing" on you. Is this a good idea? What are the chances that they would ruin my hair and how much $ would i save? I have long brown hair right now but I want to take it to a medium length with a few layers and get blonde highlights

okay well I answered one of my own questions. They said it is $35 for highlights and to add on a cut is $8 and anything extra is $8 (like if you have really long/thick hair and need extra dye). So either $43 or $51 (plus tip)
My regular stylist is $110 for cut/color!

All the stories I've heard about people going to beauty schools for cuts and/or color have ended with them spending hundreds more getting things fixed.

$110 isn't so bad for a cut and color. I pay $140 but I wouldn't dare go to anyone else.

$110 is not bad for cut and color at all! I pay $120 just for color at my current salon.

I did have my hair done at a beauty school when I was in high school. Highlights and they came out great. I would not let them cut it.

The key is gettign a student who is near graduation, not one who has only been in school a few weeks. And I would't let them cut it...nothing that is irreparable.

My sister's a hairdresser so that's where I'm coming from. If you get a talented student you can get a great deal. I reccommend giving a good tip, they work really hard in hair school, but they only receive tips & some people act like they should get a medal for giving them a dollar.

I use to go to a school when I decided to go back to school to save some cash....the first few times were good.....then my blonde highlights started to look kinda...uhhh....trashy.
I was getting girls who were close to grad and when I had to go back that girl was graduated and gone and the new girl had no idea what she put on my hair so she would go with something else and this continued until my hair was trashed!

I ended up having to suck it up and go back to a salon.....

That was just my experience though....I don't know how they run things there.

$110 is really not that bad....I pay $175 plus tip every 5 weeks.

I tried the Paul Mitchell in Costa Mesa, CA twice. No way in hell would I ever recommend it to someone I cared about. I'm sorry, I know it seems harsh and they are students but both times my hair was beyond fucked up and I noticed quite a few people coming out with shitty hair too.

I tried it once because they did a great job on cutting my neighbors sons and daughters hair in cute, funky styles. I was feeling cheap and thought I'd try it. I even tried them twice because maybe I could find a better more advanced student. I spent 6 hours both times for color (not even highlights) with what I had re-done a few weeks later in about an hour. I don't even care about that because I know they have to analyze and double check with their teachers about it. They had to process my hair like 5 times when I was going about two shades of red darker. Once I let the girl trim it because my hair was like ass-length and it was all crooked, but it was really super long so I just cut more off. It still came to like 60 plus tip. I'd just suck it up and go to a pro. It will look like a billlion times better.

Cute for little kids who want to feel "grown up" not for anyone who actually wants nice hair.

Cutting and coloring hair is something that takes practice. I wouldnt be there trial and error. Getting a massage or a manicure is different. Thats all I would let one of the students do.

Manicures, sure. French manicure? No way. You are better off buying the sticker kit from the drugstore.

I kicked ass at french manicures when I was in cosmetology school! The again, I'm half Vietnamese, so maybe it's a genetic thing

Really, without a recommendation from a reputable source, getting good services at any salon is a crap shoot, with a beauty school, your odds really suck. It all depends on your stylist, or in this case, the student. I had a senior student mess up my hair color once (it was his last day of school and long before I decided to become a stylist) and in retrospect, his fuck up was a simple, basic rule of haircolor that he should've been aware of within his first few lessons.

I'm thinking of letting my friend cut my hair for me. She's very close to graduating from cosmetology school, and she'll only charge me $3 as opposed to the place I have gone to for 12 years which charges $17.

    I'm thinking about it...

thanks everyone. I will be canceling the appointment I made!
They made it seem like it wouldn't be so bad because they would have a supervisor watching and going over what they planned on doing. I guess it's not worth fucking up my hair to save $60. I think I'll still try it for trims but nothing else...

I would never go to a beauty school for anything. One of the reasons I dance is so I can afford not to have to go the cheapie route on everything.

I went to a school for the first time recently. I didn't really want any fancy cut, just a few long layers. The girl who did my hair had already graduated and it was her last week there so it was great! and only 7$. It seems like the more money I have the cheaper I get idk lol.

I will forever vote NO on beauty school. What is $75-100 when it comes to your image? I've had mine fucked up almost beyond repair and I'm telling you right now I would have paid everything I had in the bank to get it back to where it was. No gamble with your self-esteem and your livelihood.

I think if you want some special style or color it is best to go to a professional, but if you just want the ends trimmed off it doesn't really matter. I hate paying 30$+ to cut a 1/2" of hair of the bottom.

I used to think that until I went for a cheapie cut and they totally fucked up my hair. I'm happy to pay more, and I get my cut when I get my color, so it's combined.

You get what you pay for---and that is never more true than with your hair.

I don't color my hair anymore. I'm just curious as to how they could fuck up your hair cut? I don't want to put my hair at risk I just don't see the risk. Did the school you went to have a professional supervising?

Ask Kaylinn how a trim can end up becoming a chop job! It happens all the time.

    Andy...you're right on.
