Arrow In case anyone is interested in egyptology and archaeology...

    Secrets of Egypt's Lost Queen (Discovery Channel - 9 p.m. E.S.T. ).

It documents the alleged discovery of Hatshepsut, a queen whose memory was forcibly erased, literally etched out, from history by her own people, apparently due to some abhorrent act:

    Interesting .

I don't have a TV. What abhorrent act did she commit? A perfunctory Google search didn't turn anything up for me, and I'm curious.

They have been winding it up for about an hour so far. They have gone through the fossil evidence, scanned the mummified body, they've gone through the historical record and archaeological evidence (murals and such) ...

She wore a pharoah's chin strap to emulate masculine qualities - They discovered that her chin was pierced in order to clip the chin strap in place .
They found a statue of her likeness buried underneath an important obelisk alongside a statue of another pharoah, male -

I guess they'll be getting to the important points towards the end of the program , although they have presented very interesting findings.

Gotta go; They are putting the mummies through biometric analysis (you know ) .

    I'll keep ya posted Yekhefah.

That's the mystery they seek to answer. They consider it an ancient "cold case" file.

DNA comparison for the first time ever on such specimens!

Wasn't she erased from history because she was female? I believe she wasn't even included in several pharoah lists (like she wasn't even there to be erased off of). Most of the damage to her story was done by her stepson, who took the crowd after her.

I think it was Thutmose III (or Tuthmosis, or however you want to spell it) who was really angry with her, as she was supposed to act as his regent until he became old enough to rule on his own.

But her taste of power was too much to resist, when it came time to yield, she instead hung onto the throne, and began assuming masculine dress (most notably wearing the ceremonial beard) in order to legitimize herself--so goes the traditional historical explanation.

In the course of her reign, she built one of the most beautiful monuments of all time at Deir el-Bahri, the beauty of which should not be lessened by the fact she both copied and quarried the 11th dynasty monument built by Mentuhotep II, virtually destroying it in the process.

When Thutmose III came to power he got his revenge, and the eradication of her name took place.

I haven't seen the show, but it's showing again in a half hour--thanks for posting about it...

Moments later--Hardkandee posted while I was typing--yes he was her stepson, and nephew. Her father Thutmose I was one of the first really powerful rulers of the New Kingdom. There is some speculation that the tomb in the Valley of the Kings credited to her was actually his. Certainly it is much more primitive than that of Thutmose III, which copied essential elements while improving the esthetic appeal considerably.

That wasn't actually her mummy; It was one of four potential mummies that were being investigated as belonging to her.

Djoser, your screen name certainly illustrates your affinity for the subject (unless your mom really named you Djoser ; LoL ).

I really enjoyed your summary. You concisely summarized the most important historical points beautifully.
