    Default extension advice

I'm thinking of getting extensions while I'm trying to grow my hair out. I just don't want to fuck up my real hair, but I keep hearing that the new extensions don't use glue. I know nothing about any of it and I was just wondering what your experiences have been like with extensions and what advice you might have about wearing them.

    Thanks

Here's what I've learned when I researched different extension types.

Great Lengths claim to be the best for yrou hair and not damaging because they use a keretin bond, which is so similar to your own hair structure, it won't cause damage, The truth is that Keretin is not adhesive and would not bond. So they only use a percentage of keretin, 20%, the rest is still glue, which is damaging. Another problem with Great lengths or any glue type extension is that the glue can sotfen and cause a lot of matting and tangles.
Check out this pic of glue in extensions.

Scroll down a bit to see it.

Another problem with glue in is that you need to replace the hair every time you get maintance. The hair is not reusable. So that's an added expence, where as with the links, you can reuse the hair for up to a year, and all the maintance you need is slding the links up.

I did a lot of research on all the different types, and decided for me, the links was the best way to go. Least damaging on my natural hair so it can grow out, natural looking and feeling....

I have leaned that no matter what type of extension you get, proper care is a must or you will have matting, tangling and a mess on yoru hands.
Which means make sure ahead of time you can afford the maintance. Extensiosn are not a one time cost. You need to get the taken care of every 3 months. It's a couple hundred dollars at least. So make sure before you invest in extensions, you can afford the maintance.
Also very important is how you care for the hair. It's not recieving nutrition from your scalp, so it can get very dry and tangles easily. You've got to wash it properly, consition it properly, never ever brush it wet or go to sleep with wet hair, tie it in ponytails when you sleep, basicially take extreame care to ot get tangles. If the hair tangles up to much, by the time you get them removed, they will be cutting rat's nests out. So it is most important to take very good care of the hair. It's a lot different that natural hair, I'm learning.

The clip in's are a good choice, but for me, I wanted something more permenant, and my hair was so short clip in's just didn't blend very well, so I decided to splurge and get good extensions, but LR has had clip in's and speaks very highly of them, and they looked great in her hair.

I'm really loving these extensions, and I'm still very happy with them. The links aren't heavy or bothersome at all. Sleeping took some getting used to, it wasn't painful or anythign, but a little uncomfortable for a few days. But it was never painful and should never be.
Another nice thing is with the links, they come in different sizes, so they can actually use very tiny links to put hair in yrou bangs, or right on top of the head if nessessary, and it'll never show.

Yeah, Euro-locs are re-usable. But they don't look as natural as the Great Lengths. I have the locs in my avatar. Make sure the little "loc" matches the darkest part of your hair.

Great lengths were costing me 5-6K a year. That wasn't unreasonable as a stripper, but not needed upon retirement.

    Both can damage your hair.

Thanks Kaylinn. I'm investigating locks. I think it's the glue that fucks up your hair. I was wondering if they are heavy and hot. Also, do you think that they would make it more difficult to grow out your hair or cause breakage? Anyone have experience with this?

Yeah, the new thing is microlinks in which individual hair extensions are attached to your hair with a copper or aluminum ring. It's similiar to dream catchers what paris hilton uses. The hair is reusable with proper care of course. Plus it's non-damaging as long as you take them off after 3 months because any extensions left in your hair after that is damaging to your own hair. Don't be fooled when stylists say you can leave hair extensions in for 6 months and it won't damage the hair, that is so wrong.

Uhh...I did not just pay $1600 for extensions that I will only leave in for 3 months.

Why would it be damaging to leave them in longer? You get maintance, and they move the loc up the hair shaft. So the loc is now on a new part of the hair, not the same part. They detangle and remove shedded hair when they do the maintance.

You'll want to change them out after 3 months as your own hair grows out into dread s where the extentions are attached. They will also begin to show. Unless your hair grows extremely slowly, 3-4 months is all you'll be able to handle.

Well yeah, they told me after 3-4 months they will need maintained, but what to change out?

They just open the loc, detangle, and slide it back up.

    I'm confused.

Hehehe, your dude is full of it. They need to take them ALL out and put wax back on the tips of the hair. They will also replace the locs, as they get sebum and crap inside of them, making them prone to slipping it. As long as it took to put them in, it will take as long to put them back in PLUS about an hour + to take them out AND untangle your hair. The untangling process is very unpleasant as well, even if you do take good care of them.

However, as strippers, its almost impossible to keep them perfectly, unless you don't move around much. I was a pretty active dancer, lots of pole tricks and hair draping tricks during dances.

My lady saved time having her daughter and me "re-wax" the hair tips before she locked them back in. But the process still took longer than the initial. Oh, and if you're doing color, add that time in. Although the extentions can be colored, its best to get them pre-colored, and dye your natural hair to match.

The reason is that the hair doesn't come from one woman's head, it comes from several heads. And not all hair has the same level of porousness for coloring.

So, YMMV, but I did this several times over many years, so I'd like to think I'm informed.

I'm so over extensions and I think I've expressed that a lot on this board. No matter what kind you have, the most important thing is to take excellent care of them. Do not let them get tangled. And give your hair a break from extensions every few months. Like a week at least with no extensions in your hair to give it some time to heal and strengthen.

Kaylinn, if you wear them for 6 months with no time off, I'd be very surprised if it has not weakened and damaged your hair. I do not think extensions are the way to go if you want to grow your hair out healthily. If you don't care about growing it out and just want the look of long hair, by all means go ahead.

The only way I'd ever get extensions again is if I can afford to Paris Hilton it. Get em done for an event, wear them for a few weeks, then take em out and give my hair a break b/c I don't really care how much money I spent on them. I would never wear them for extended lengths of time again. I think real long hair is much sexier, esp when your boyfriend wants to put his hands in your hair. Not cute with extensions.

I had them done because of the type of hair I have. It looks fine until it gets to my shoulders, and then its just thin and broken...no matter what I do, even if I condition like crazy and don't blow dry it. The follicle just weakens too easily. I loved them, and they looked really hot.

I will get them again one day.

I usually do a maintance in between for my clients then remove them at the end of the 3rd month.

The hair plus the time to put it in cost me over $1K. Definately NOT cheap. That's why I took them out after I retired, I just could no longer justify it in my budget since my hair length doesn't affect my earnings.

    Mine cost $1600.

Maintence every 2-3 months will cost anothe few hundred....maybe 250-300.

The price depends on a lot of things. How many strands you will need, wich is based on yoru hair type, how thick it is...thicker hair needs more strands, which makes it mor eexpensive.

The hair type and color affects the price as well. I'm a blonde, and blonde hair is more expensive because it is processed more. My guy recommended a couple strands of wavy hair to add body and volume, even tho I have straight hair. The wavy cost more because it is processed further. If you got all striaght hair, it would be cheaper. All wavy or curly it would cost a lot more.

So my price of $1600 was because I got 300 strands, which is a lot. Most people need 150-200, but I have very thick hair. PLus the blonde hair and the wavy pieces all amounted to that price. Plus the labor. It took him 7 hours to put them all in.

After the initial cost, plus the maintence cost every 2-3 months, you also have to factor int he cost of shampoo and conditioner. You have much longer hair, so you use a lot more, and you must use high end products. I have learne dthis lesson the hard way, and tried to get away with cheap products, and I have had crazy amounts of slippage.
Average is 5-10 strands slip every 2-3 months. I have had these in for a month exactly, and have lost 25 strands. ( I've been seeing him every week to put back in the lost strands)

You've got to buy the proper shampoo and conditioner or you will have slippage, among other problems.

So there's a lot of added cost on top the initial fee. It's not cheap.

But some cocktail waitress told me last night i had the most beautiful hair she has ever seen. That makes it all worth it.........

I had Great Lengths and they didn't screw up my hair beyond recognition or anything, but I did have alot of breakage and even one small thin spot (not noticable to the eye but still there!). I had them for a couple of years. The cost was getting ridiculous, even though I had long hair already, it was just thin. Now I use clip-in's, I make them myself. I buy the hair and those clips, sow the latter on to the other and make my own pieces. Saves me money and hasn't damaged my hair yet.

I had great lengths too and like LatinaRose said... maintaince is everything. I would purchase one of those brushes that are made for extensions. I think all extesnsions do damage and do not recommend them at all especially if you have fine hair. But good luck with what you try!

And Paris hiltons are called DreamCatchers.. but anything thats actually fused with heat I think does more damage. Least damage 4 me was Tru-locks which I think is the same as Eurolocs (sp?)

Dreamcatchers are supposed to be a locking device. So, in your opinion that would be better?

No, your money making ability mostly has to do with your confidence regardless of whether you have extensions or not. It didn't change my money.

I've had extensions before and it didn't change how much I made either. Not worth it imo, i lost a bunch of hair when taking them out.

I'm kinda shocked at the responses. My hair has made a HUGE difference. But honestly, I think it's because it gave me a BIG confidence boost. I doubled my profits. If you're doing it only for money, it may not be worth it. However, I did it for me, and the money followed.
