    Default Bastard child

I was talking to someone about this term the other day if a couple has a child out of wedlock dose that make the child a bastard? I think the word is negitive and should never be used to describe a child regardless of the circumstances of its birth or conception. A child is innonecant and should not be degraded becuse of the action of the parents. I want opiones on this please.

Well, that was the original meaning of the word..an illegitimate child born out of wedlock. It was used as a slur because being born out of wedlock was such a taboo, and devolved from there.

That's what the word means......it's usually not used for it's original meaning anymore.....people just use it as an insult with little thought about the meaning behind it. Sort of like "Slut"- it means "woman of loose morals", which could mean anything from bad language, thievery, being a bad mother, being a mother out of wedlock, not attending church.....now it's used more specifically....
Language is constantly changing....especially the English Language, linguistics are a hobby of mine, it's fascinating to see which directions our words came from.

I'm a bastard. By the strictest and original definition. I was born to unwed teenaged parents and adopted at three days old, so I'm "illegitimate".

And does the word bother me? Not even in the slightest. Big deal. I know where it came from at its roots, and I also know that anyone with half a brain, in this day & age, would never seriously hold the circumstances of my conception against me.

I do think the concept of legitimacy/illegitimacy is a little ridiculous (*I* am "invalid" somehow because my mom didn't get walked down an aisle in a white dress & do a bunch of other superstitious rituals before fucking my dad? Ohhkaayy), but only in the absurd sense, not at all in the offensive sense.

That's the definition of bastard. I would've sworn it still was. Bitch means a female dog. A whore is someone who sells their body for sex. An asshole is where your partner sticks it after too many drinks... etc.

Man, this place is getting so p.c.

And yes, wedlock means marriage. Bastard means had baby before marriage.

Thats my exact situation as well. To me its just a word now. The concept of illegitimacy is a rather outlandish one as well.

I think the stigma of bastard children is not much of an issue these days. So many people choose not to marry these days plus a good number of fathers are deadbeat Dad's. Between the two situations it's become so common for children to be raised out of wedlock that not many people pass judgement anymore.
