Argh, I do this too. I think it has something to do with the fact that I easily and quickly forget what I have to say in response to people, so I just (rudely) interrupt people so I don't forget.

My friend Max does this all the time....but then again that fool talks way too much. Some of my friends think hes gay cause he talks to too much....(like talking too much is a female trait).....i just find it tiresome and aggravating. He's one of those people that will talk and talk and you never get a chance to "input"...when you do start talking he shuts up but then resumes back up again with the quickness resulting in interruption.

This seems to be the root of it for me, as well...either that or whatever I have to say is just more important...

I used to do the exact same thing for the same reason. I realized how incredibly rude and selfish it is so I stopped. Sometimes I do forget what I was going to say but it means it wasn't really that important.

My Mom says it's a sign of Adult ADD.

Listen to what people actually say. Don't plan your response as they are speaking. Its ok to pause for a moment between talking to ascertain the end of the monologue.

Some people won't fucking shutup, and they know that they speak innapropriately long. Lots of customers used to do this to try and get free time off of me. Fuckers. Overspeaking is just as rude as interuppting.

Guilty as well! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I try not to do it, as it's rude and all that. However, sometimes I can't tell when people are finished talking. A lot of people around me take these really long or weird pauses. Sometimes I wonder if it's just a speech pattern like anything else. Other times, it seems like they just can't seem to verbalize their thoughts or something... but that doesn't explain when they're just talking about something simple or straightforward.

    I don't get people.

    I do.

I get really excited and bust out to say something and then I catch myself and have them continue. But I still feel like a jerk!

    Cool thread, SteveK!

IMO, the flip side of interrupting is "active listening." Active listening is a deliberate way of listening and answering that places the attention on the speaker and their message. If you were raised in an argumentative household--like I was--your experiences may have taught you that when people talk to each other, they usually don't listen attentively.

I believe that when people argue, they are often too busy thinking about responding to what is being said by whoever they're getting into with and don't really hear the message that's being communicated by the other person. Over time, especially if we're growing up arguing a lot, we can develop bad listening habits. After that occurs, it becomes easy to assume you've already heard what your SO, relative, friend, co-worker, enemy, etc is saying many times before. Rather than paying attention, we get into the habit of focusing on how we can answer in order to win "the argument."

In my experience, many people seem to fall into that "interrupting" pattern of communication to such a degree that even during "normal" conversations, we are often distracted, half listening or half thinking about something else while someone else is talking. Then--here's the kicker--when we snap out of it, we get impatient with listening to what we may not even have heard in the first damn place--and interrupt! ......

It's not adult ADD. It's life in the new millennium. Somewhere between 75-95% of the population does this.

Welcome to the world of people, where they don't really listen, but want to use what you say as a launching point for what they want to say. Therefore, when you've gotten to the point where their launch button is pushed, they're off, whether you've finished or not.
