Default hair color - help me find it!

my hair is naturally a dark reddish blonde. i dye it a brighter red because i don't like the dull half assed red i have naturally. i was using a feria "power red" for awhile, but they stopped making my specific color. i was thinking about going lighter, but still red, but i'm having trouble finding the right shade. everything is either too dark red or too blonde. i know i can go to a stylist, but i'd rather not pay out the ass for something i won't be able to keep up every 6 weeks (since red fades fast).

i want something close to THIS color

she's had it darker, but i like this shade best.

this is also a good one..

see? not dark red and not blonde.. a lighter copper. i know it's "orangey" but that's fine. those shades look great on me because i have natural red tones anyway.

anyone know of a brand/color that is similar? i will love you for forever!

If everything you try is a sure thing, you aren't taking enough risks. If you never fail, you put a limit on the degree to which you can succeed. In short, the only way to win big is to risk losing

The only problem you are going to have with that is that both of the girls have hi-lites. That is what blends together to get that look. Also, you are putting color over color. You will never achieve the color on the box even if it looks right. I really think you are better off going to a salon. Single process hair color really can be affordable. Also, check out Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner. It is the best at holding reds. It is a bit pricey, but it is super concentrated and a bottle lasts a long time. You only need the size of a nickle and then add water. Also you can mix in small amount of a demi-permant color basic red (something like special effects or manic panic) so it actually deposits a tiny bit of color when you wash it. It will look like it's fading more slowly. I hope you find that color you're looking for!

thanx girls! i have anti fade shampoos for red (with the pigments and such) i can also do my own highlights.

has anyone used that colorsilk stuff before? decent brand?

also, i always strand test on a cut of my hair before i dye it, so i know what the results will look like.

Have you considered going to the Aveda institude in St. Pete? I just had mine colored by a very talented (but veeerrry sloooow) student named Kim. It was $50, and that was a full head of highlights. Regular color is a lot cheaper (Probably around $30?). Some of the students are good at color, some not-so-good. I lucked out with her (in a way... I was there for HOURS!); I'm happy overall with my results. Also, salon color is supposed to not fade as fast, because it's stronger, I'm told. And they can also mix up a custom color for you. Kim comes with my highest recommendations, but set aside a good 4 hours!

^^ I agree with the above suggestion. Trying to go from a dark red to a copper is not an easy process. If it messes up then you'll probably end up going to a salon anyway

^^^ Please, please, please DO NOT DIY this change!!! First thing you learn as a colorist is color does not lift color... In other words, the darker, more vibrant permanent red color that already exists in your hair will be minimally (if at all) affected by the lighter color you're trying to achieve. Most likely, you're roots will turn to the desired shade and the rest of your hair will remain a darker shade of red- something we call "hot roots"... it's not pretty.

Once hair has been artificially darkened, the only way to lighten it is with decolorizer (aka bleach).

it's not dark red right now. it's very very faded, almost to my natural color. i was giving my hair "a break" for a bit. so, it's fairly light at the moment.

Doesn't matter, the hairs color molecules have already been permanently altered with haircolor... lighter shades of boxed color contain higher developers so the roots will lighten and the previously colored hair won't resulting in hot roots.

Now, if your natural hair color is the same level (lightness/darkness) of your desired color, you can use a demi permanent color instead which doesn't lift at all so you won't get hot roots. Demi permanent is a great option for anyone who wants to stay the same level or go darker and it doesn't damage the hair... If you want to lighten, you must use permanent color and if you want to lighten previously colored hair you gotta use bleach.
