    Default Happiness...

...is something we all seek. Sometimes we feel it and sometimes it is appears to be making its best effort to avoid us. So goes life.

What do you think happiness is and how do you attain it? (No, I am not in a depressed or morbid mood...just curious as per usual).

This question is for all the viewers out there in SW Land....have a great day...

I actually did a search on this and did not come up with any of those threads. Guess I better refine my searching skills.

I just read the above threads. I don't know that they really answer the question though.

Now, we are getting somewhere. Why is it temporary?

Very nice quote...but...is it really the "nature" of the human mind to be on the move? What is our mind at the moment of birth?

**Note: I just want to be clear of my motivations here. I am not claiming to hold the answer. I am just looking for some interesting dialog and ideas. Perhaps we can all learn a little about ourselves...and of course...humor is always welcome (Lestat!).

When I read the threads that Paige posted (I did not read EVERY entry) what I saw was laundry lists of likes and wants. But do these really bring happiness or just temporary gratification?

A good friend once told me Happiness is a "happenin" thing and I must say I totally agree. I don't think happiness is a constant state. I have seen people who are very content and pleasant in their lives but joy and happiness come from a particular event or situation that occurs in one's life in my opinion.

Even temporary gratification can be reflected on at a later date and bring renewed happiness.

    Happiness to me means:
*Getting back with the one girl who stole my heart
    *Having a K20A2 motor in my EP3
*Eating delicious food in a delightful setting
    *Walking and talking
    *Hearing and seeing

I find happiness in every little thing i take for granted.

I define happiness by cracking a smile and that smile being genuine.

P.S. Asking someone to define "happiness" is like asking someone to define "love"....youll get a plethora of definitions and outlooks it really just depends on how you define it.

Contentment is a form of happiness and some traditions would argue that it is true happiness. Is it possible for an event to happen and you respond without changing your happiness? Can one experience anger at a situation, but still be happy at another level? Are these emotions mutually exclusive? You can be angry without having your love diminish. For instance, your child runs into the street. You get angry and scold them, but that does not diminish your love.

True. That was the primary purpose of my bringing this up. I don't think there is one correct answer. I am not trying to say that you are wrong and I am right (this is directed at everyone). Let's hear everyones thoughts and inputs. Perhaps we can learn more about ourselves in the process.

I can't say it better than Osho, so I will just quote him.

"Happiness... we all crave it, seek it, work for it, demand it, command it, embrace it, and bathe in it. When it doesn’t materialize on cue, we are saddened and disappointed. And when it is swirling around us, we are often oblivious to its magic. A happy person is not one who is always happy. He is happy even when there is unhappiness. Happiness is not conditional. The thumb rule is to have happiness in you. Happiness alone can welcome and accept happiness... There are two ways to live life: outwards in search of happiness and inwards in search of bliss. Bliss wells up from your own sources, hence it is impossible to lose it."

True, but is that our true nature? Are these "cravings" learned or are we born with them? Are we absolutely perfect at birth only to have that perfection "taught" away?

"In reality, there are times when you can't come up with the right answer. Things that you can't do anything about. Not all people can become happy. Why? Because happiness corrupts people. We adapt to the happiness we obtain once, and pursue even greater happiness. We're greedy. That's why people are able to feel pain as well. If people don't feel sad, they won't know what happiness is. Despite the contradiction."

    -Nicolas D. Wolfwood.

Happiness is a PROCESS, completing the process is as much a loss to happiness as giving up or failing is during. The path needs to be re-invented, renewed and nourished.

Happiness is fleeting. You can't be completely happy every moment of your life, or you'll never be happy at all. There must be moments of despair, anger, and other emotions for you to appreciate happiness when it occurs.

Satisfaction, on the other hand, is more of a general state. You can't always be happy but you can be satisfied with your life even when things are going wrong at the moment. That's what I've been working on lately.

I saw something the other day that pointed out why the Declaration of Independence says we have an inalienable right to the "pursuit of happiness," not to happiness itself. We don't have a right to happiness, or else happiness wouldn't exist. It's the PURSUIT of happiness that brings about general satisfaction. We can't always have happiness, but we can always pursue it.

Oh, and Happiness is one really fucking awesome Todd Solondz movie.

I my opinion contentment is a more of a constant state. I wish certain events wouldn't change my mood or make me sad if I was feeling happy. I think people can feel other emotions along with happiness, yes. Before committing suicide, people are obviously not in the best frame of mind but ironically they are happy because their suffering is about to end.

Love is another story. Love and happiness don't always correlate. I can love someone but be very unhappy with their behavior.

    Happiness is...

    *Being anywhere but here.
*Knowing that the words "I love you" are real in your relationship.
*Listening to Bird make kissing noises and fox whistles.
*Singing and dancing with Bird, too.
*Knowing things just have to get better (even when you just broke a huge ass mirror and superstition says you should have bad luck...ha!).
*Saying "I AM that smart/good/pretty/(insert other word here)" and really believing it.
    *FERRETS!
A list of very nice things. If you did not have any of those things could you still be happy?

This is true for most of us and is getting at the heart of the discussion. This is true because we pursue things that we THINK will acquire happiness. In the end we realize that they don't, so we pursue the next thing to find happiness. Buddhist's refer to this as "Samsara" (the cyclical extistence) and they see it as the cause of unhappiness.
