Do you enjoy being an exotic dancer/stripper?

Hi ladies. Okay, the reason I'm asking this question is because I've been reading a ton of posts about girls who can't wait to quit or retire from dancing. I'm wondering if this is because so many have been dancing for a long time, things are just too slow, there's no fun in dancing any more...? Why or why don't you love your job? Thanks!

I have been dancing a long time and I still like it. I don't stick around for bullshit though. Seems to me the vast majority of girls who hate this job are those who stay in the same place a long time and put up with whatever crap their managers choose to dish out.

Ok I'll take the first crack at this one.

I've been danceing for ten years. Just moved to the LA area from IL/WI area.
    Things I love about danceing:

When I'm on stage I'm the star. I let the music consume me and I give everything I've got. I'm very passionate and sensual when I dance. No pole tricks really. Just nice and smooth. Sexy. I totally loose myself on stage. It's an awesome feeling. I'm addicted to it actually.
I've met sooo many interesting people(guy's&girl's) and learned so much. Some custy's have great stories and are very intelligent.
I also enjoy makeing peopel feel good about themselves. Lots of custy\ies are just lonely and want a pretty girl to talk to.

Things I can't stand about danceing:

Narrow minded assholes that judge me for being a "stripper"(oh no!)
Drunk, grabby custies. No respect for women. They come in, get drunk, and proceed to treating us like pieces of meat.I could go on but you get the point.
Ten years of danceing equals tendonitus in both ankles, bad back, really bad knees. Lot's of pain.
Money use to be really good but not for the last 3-4 yrs. Have'nt danced in LA yet, but I heard it's pretty bad.

So there's a few things I could come up with.
A womens body is a beautiful piece of art.Strip clubs are a dancer's gallery.

Does society ever make you think "What the fuck?"

I have danced for five years...in the begining it was my dream job, I had the most fun I'd ever had in my life and made the most money I've ever made. It really has been a blessing in my life and gave me a solid foundation...I'll always have the memories...then towords the end during this year I felt like a slave to the money, I was having the worst anxiety attacts, and felt horrible because of the lack of money in the club and the standards have dropped so drasticaly. Guys were getting so agressive and I was not having fun anymore...even though I still made good money I've found myself starting to dance closer than ever and tolorate more and more touching. I was drinking myself sick and got so depressed I would lie in bed for a week...so I just got hired at a Hooters resturant and am very happy about it. Some might consider it a step down but I haven't been this excited about something since I started dancing. I know it is hard work, but I like being busy and while you still get to be sexy you don't have to tolorate getting groped and talked to so filthy. Some girls feel comfortable with that...I don't so I have choosen to walk away. When I first started dancing in Minneapolis...the money was unbelievable and I could dance within my comfort level..now that there are more clubs than ever, more girls than customers, outragous house fees, lack of clientel, the trend of private rooms...it is more competitve than ever and I just can't hang anymore. I might never see that type of money again but that is ok...I'm happy with my choice..there are lots of things I'll miss about it but I don't feel the same as I did when I first started. The industry has changed and not for the better imo. Money has gotten worse and girls are doing more. It has changed me for the better, gave me a tremendous work ethic and matured me as a woman..but I've graduated now and am very excited about my new life!

As much as I bitch and whinge and moan and rant it usually hasn't anything to do with the business I am in as much as it has to do with me and my own issues/insecurities.

This is not an ideal business for me I realise that... at least it is ideal enough for me to warrant wanting to do it for so long and to be able to do it for so long ... and to continue doing it for awhile longer.

It has given me so so much... much more than any other "job" (this is a business not just a "job") could have given me. I've been able to travel, expose myself to a whole heap of life experiences and people... the only time I would give it up is if an animal related "job" came my way that gave me just as much pleasure (and was able to give me a good lifestyle).

I'm not a lifestyle stripper. At the same time, I don't neglect that part of my life totally for "the business" of being a stripper.

I do want to exit this business eventually because my other plans (that I'm currently working upon) have come to fruition.

I'm a lifer til I need not do it anymore.

I've been dancing for 5 years. I go in spurts of hating and loving it. Right now, I hate it.

I think for me, dancing was somethign I was never meant to do, but I happen to be very good at it, and I like the freedom, hours and money to much.
So even tho I actually despise the job, it's to hard to me to give it up because I would miss the freedom and money.

I used to like the job, I liked the power trip, I liked the attention. But as I've gotten older, that doesn't matter to me anyjmore. I don't care for attention, and I don't care to play mind games with people.

I have only been dancing for maybe 3 months...and for the most part I enjoy. However I have found that a bad night stripping is worse than a bad night doing anything else (i think something similar was said in Lily Buranas Strip City). I've seen girls crying in the dressing room because they just couldnt make money....and last night that was me. After being turned down over and over again (and I do pretty well...it seems like even when everyone else is having a bad night...I do ok) I just cried a little and went home because it was just eating away at my self esteem.

When I first started dancing in the 90's it was 80% love and 20% hate. By 1999 or so it was 90% love and 10% hate. After 9/11/2001 the scales rebalanced to 50% love and 50% hate. By 2006 this had fallen to 20% love and 80% hate ... at which point I decided that there was no way I was going to continue regular live dancing in clubs.

I LOVE getting to be lazy about my schedule. I love working whenever I feel like it and not working whenever I don't feel like it. I love the money. I love guys telling me I'm the hottest thing in the club all night long.

I DON'T LOVE the stigma of dancing, that I can't tell my family and some of my friends what I do. I don't love that it doesn't make me feel proud of myself, or like I'm making the world a better place by what I do. I don't love the unhealthy environment: the smoke and loud music and dirty stages. I don't love the ridiculously incompetent management. I also really don't love the panic and anxiety that I feel by not having a long-term career.

All in all, yes I do enjoy what I do. If I didn't I wouldn't do it.

So for those of you who decided to stop dancing, what did you do? Did you graduate and decide to roll with your new degree? Did you go back to school? Did you start a company?

When I first started I absolutely loved it. But lately the clubs have been dead and more men are treating strip clubs like whore houses instead of entertainment. I now only strip part time. I can't wait t get my degree. I also hope to strip for 3 months in iceland.

I really could have kept dancing for a few more years. However, I was starting to feel guilty that with all of my education and professional experience, I was still stripping. Plus, I was working another business on the side, and my partner and I decided it wasn't working out, so I had no cover anymore. Finally, my partying had gotten to an epic level, and I wasn't even doing much stripping anymore. I'd work 1-2 days a week, and be drugged up the rest of the time.

But I do miss the flexibility of schedule and the fast cash. Oh, and the hustle, I like that. Lots of other things I don't miss though. I never viewed stripping as being particularly empowering or dis-empowering as a female. I have no qualms with people making "easy money" if they can. Of course, we all know it isn't all that easy.

But there are a lot of similarities with what I do now. Sometimes its a feast. I've earned about $15K in commissions the last 3 weeks. However, the entire month before, I probably made $2K. That really sucks for 60-70 hours a week of work. I would love to go back to dancing, but my work is very rewarding at the end of the day, whereas stripping was not. Plus, its just not a good environment for a recovering addict.

I totally agree! I'm very happy to leave it behind...but I DO love being an entertainer...I just think it is in my blood...but because of how dead and almost vulgar it has become I don't want to dance full time anymore....but I wouldn't mind dancing once in a blue moon because I love to dance! Maybe I'll hop back in my club only if I really need money for something (like expensive Prince tickets!LOL I'll strip! I'll strip for my man!) but I just need something eles in my life and need something less mentally taxing than this hard hustle. But I know I'll miss the stage and doing my moves!

I think most strippers have a love-hate relationship with their job. We get spoiled of the money, accustomed to making a certain amount, and when we don't meet it we get very upset. The money comes with it's price though. Yes, you have to put up with horrible nights and grabby assholes, cunt managers, catty coworkers, drugs, sex and whatnot, but where else can you make $100+ per hour on no required schedule? So as much as we bitch and bitch about this or that terrible night or awful customer, as soon as someone says "well then why don't you quit dancing and get a real job?" we get all up in arms about it. "no way! I love dancing!" we say.

not wanting to hijack this thread, but what the hell ...

I did things backwards. Before I ever started dancing I had already obtained my degree in Respiratory Therapy and had worked in major hospitals in NY and NJ for several years. I wound up getting divorced from a guitarist with big dreams but small income, which left me with huge debts to pay off. I quickly realized that with the size of the leftover debts which got dumped on my shoulders I would wind up being a wage slave my entire life if all I had was a Respiratory Therapist paycheck to pay off the debts + pay for 'necessary' living expenses. At about the same time a new strip club opened nearby, and I went for it.

As a dancer I quickly discovered that it was possible to earn WAY more money than even the best, longest service Respiratory Therapists could ever earn. So I concentrated on dancing and 'improving' my marketability in order to maximize my earnings potential (see my Avatar for two big 'improvements'). Because of the debts I had to pay down, right from the start I followed a strict program of financial discipline. I forced myself to work extra nights, to change clubs, to take road trips etc. in order to be sure that I earned enough as a dancer to cover all of my 'necessary' expenses plus X additional dollars to pay down my debts inside of a year.

After the debts were gone, I continued to force myself to do whatever I had to do in order to cover all of my 'necessary' expenses plus put aside X additional dollars towards building up savings and investments instead of debt pay-down.

After something like 10 years worth of putting aside X dollars towards savings and investments, plus some lucky breaks with many of my investments, I had enough of a 'nest egg' built up that the interest and dividends from my savings and investments was large enough to cover all of my 'necessary' expenses.

Thus, to answer your question, I'm now in the fortunate position that if I don't feel like dancing, I don't have to, and my mortgage payment, utility bills, car payment etc. still get paid with dividend and interest income to spare (and reinvest) !!! I'm actually in a position where, if I'm willing to live a 'simple' life, I never need to work again.

Living in the high tax state of New York, it would actually be crazy for me to ever go back to working as a Respiratory Therapist, since my dividend and interest income plus a Respiratory Therapist income would kick me into the next tax bracket - such that 1/2 of the Respiratory Therapist paycheck would have to go directly to taxes !!!

I do not love stripping, but I like it more than I'd like another low-skill job, because that low-skill job would certainly pay less, and that would give me one more thing to worry about.

I am in the uneviable position of having sabotaged my marketability long before I started dancing, with a huge, impossible-to-conceal tattoo. I do okay, but I appeal to a niche market. It's troubling because I know that if I could look more conservative, I would do wonderfully with older gentlemen, as I'm educated, articulate, even-tempered, and able to act very sweet. However, I am That Girl With The Tattoo; my appearance tends to eclipse my personality.

What I'm getting at is, I suppose that if this were different, I might like stripping more, as I would not have to hear, "No thanks, I don't like tattoos" 50 or 100 times a night. I realize of course that I'd still get rejections, but I know I'd appeal to a wider customer base.

when i used to dance, i did enjoy it...the attention...and, though it may sound cheesy, the fact that i felt like i was helping some of my customers...dancing was really more psychology than sexuality/sensuality...a lot of those guys just wanted someone to listen to them, to stroke their egos, to boost their confidence, etc. the money was an added bonus. there are times though, like with any other job, that you can't stand it, but that's the normal up and down of hard work. i really do miss it, and hopefully, if i can find a club, i'll be back to it...right now i need to be doing it anyway.

Well, I have very mixed feelings about my job. I've been dancing for a year now...and well, I am looking forward to the next step of my life to be honest.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my experience as a dancer, and overall I say its been mainly positive. There have been some bad times, but I've learned and grown from it all. I enjoy pole dancing, having an audience, the attention, the money, etc...But I"m ready to move on to school and then to bigger and better things!

I can't wait until years down the line I can have fun embarrassing my kids with stories about my stripper days with friends! lol...

Yes I enjoy it. I wish i had started dancing years ago instead of just 8 months ago.
Some nights I leave and think "I hate this job what am i doing?" but I would imagine people from a variety of industries often feel this way. I still go back the following night or following week.

I am in my final year of law school and I have a bachelor in psychology however as i have had no luck in securing articles I will be dancing until I find full time employment - which I am not actually looking forward to TBH.

I like being a performer/entertainer, making people feel good about themselves, the freedom, money, and the dancing itself. There is a lot of crap that comes with the job though. You learn to either not tolerate it or just not let it get to you at all.

I started dancing as a way to pursue my career in film/entertainment. Now that I am involved with a project that will be shooting soon, I am excited to retire from dancing and work as an actress/writer/filmmaker instead.
