    Convicted Felons

Has anyone here ever been convicted or have a record.. ? If so how hard was it for you to find a legit job or how did you talk the employers into giving you a chance? I have a felon but just don't want to end up dancing forever . But if it comes down to that....I have no choice but to . What are your inputs on a situation like this....?

as an employer i have to say it does affect my opinion of a job candidate but i don't make it a deal-breaker. i'm more interested in how the person carries themselves, reliability, stability, maturity, responsibility, and then ability. ability being the last because i'm an ardent believer in training the person for the job rather than finding someone that fits perfectly into it.

my experience has shown me that reliability/stability/maturity/responsibility are the foundations to a good person and a good employee (or employer for that matter).

i think you should start incrementally by getting part-time jobs (while dancing) and hold them for a significant period of time (at least a year). i'm not saying stay in a crappy job but don't bounce around. that's a big red flag for me. instability/unreliability probably counts more (for me) than a record. as long as you're a reformed criminal, that is.

but slowly and steadily building your resume will help offset the criminal record imo. don't get me wrong, it won't negate it but if you build enough good points it could diminish the bad point by comparison. every employer is different too so don't get discouraged. hth

i think maybe for some cases it may depend on what it was. but im sure any good employer worth ur time will realized that $#!+ happens and people change.

It definitely depends on the crime and the job. If you were convicted of child molestation and you want to work in a school, I would say your odds are not good. If it was failure to return a rental vehicle several years ago and you want to work as a secretary, you've probably got a shot.

I've never been caught, but I've still had a hard time finding work more meaningful work than "Would you like fries with that?"

So, basically career stripping = entrepreneur. Felony+ stripping = Future Strip club owner? Possibly future White House Aide to the president?

But seriously, you'll probably have a fair amount of luck in the trades (electrician, plumber, carpenter, mason, tile and flooring specialist, iron worker, welder). There are so many ex-cons currently working in the trades, that it is almost not even considered at all in hiring.

Social work is also a possibility. Especially helping people who have had similar experiences to yours.

The practice of law or being a paralegal should be fine, too.

I'd stay away from k-12 education, banking, pharmacology, import/export business.

You should be fine in medical fields, too.

I think the best thing is to double check with any college councilor before you spend a lot of time and money to be trained in a field that you won't be able to be hired into.

The TSA is probably out, too.

well.., i got in trouble with money. Right now i'm trying to work in a lab at a eyeglass store, but don't know if they would give me that possible chance. I was attending school for Computer Networking but i'm pretty sure im just S.O.L (Shit outta luck) on that part. Not really worth spending all that money on something i can't do like you said....!

Maybe it's a peculiarily American thing to ask about records, but I have never been asked such a question in relation to a job. The most I've ever been asked for, in over ten jobs/15 offers:

    - a credit check: from a bank-related business

    - a birth certificate: after hiring, for a para-public organisation pension fund purposes

    - an actual real original transcript: from an American company

Or maybe it's just the kinds of employers that I tend to work for? I've also never been asked for a drug test (I understand that there have to be very specific reasons in order to be able to ask for this, legally, here).

Here's what I'm getting to: if it looks like it's a problem, can you concentrate on employers/sectors who don't ask? I'm sure that there are plenty over where you are who don't ask any more often than the ones here. Sort-of like landlords and credit checks (they love those here too) - small time landlords tend to go more on how they feel about you and don't get in to the credit BS. It's the big corporate ones that are sticklers for that type of thing.
