    Default Pomeranians

What are your experiences with the breed? I have one and so do a few close friends and is it just me, or do these dogs love to french kiss? It seems like everytime I'm around one, it tries to stick it's tongue in my mouth ! And they also are very vocal dogs! I know there are several girls on here who have them. What is your dog's personality like?

    I'm considering getting another dog.....

    I have two poms....

Ours don't really try to kiss u on the mouth, in fact neither are too "licky". One of them is, I guess compared to a lot of dogs vocal...however I also have a miniature dachshund puppy, and I assure you doxies are WAY MORE VOCAL than any pomeranian i've ever come across. (hound dogs tend to whine and "talk to you", as mine does too, which i don't mind..it's very funny and cute...) Also my mini doxie is very, very "licky" and incredibly loving...even a little bit more the poms.

Both of our poms are VERY loving and loyal sweet little guys tho.

Be careful when selecting a pom however, make sure the breeder has not bred bad genes into the litter. Pomeranians are prone to a genetic skin disease called the "black skin disease", which is basically alopecia for dogs.

One of our poms has this, at around the age of 3 he started to lose his hair and the skin exposed turned black. He is now completely bald on his sides and stomach, and also part of his legs. His fur is also very thin.

Not that that matters though, we love them all just the same. Just letting you know what is in the breed

If you decide you don't want to adopt from a shelter, I would reccomend a pom or a miniature dachshund for a dog. They're both GREAT dogs to have in my experience. Especially if you're looking for something small with a great personality.

To be honest if I ever decided to get another dog, I would choose a mini dachshund over a pomeranian. One of the downsides to poms besides the genetic skin disorder that is VERY common, is that they tend to be a bit neurotic (IMO).

The dachshund is a little girl, she just turned 6months old a few days ago...and at first my parents were skeptical as they preferred poms to anything and thought that's all they'd ever want again...but now they couldn't be happier with Noodle, and if given a choice for another dog also would like another dachshund. The only potential downside we've seen to having a hound dog in the house is that she is very talkative, she doesn't bark a whole lot...but she scolds you. She makes a sound that sounds like Tigger "roooooooo" when she dissaproves of whatever you're doing or is trying to tell u something, which is often. Some people don't like that about the breed, I think it's hilarious. She's an absolute BLAST. Best dog we've ever had.

That's just my experience. Sorry to go off on the tangent about poms vs. doxies. Just thought I'd let you know my experience with them, since u said u were considering getting another dog.

But yeah, Pomeranians are great dogs to have aswell. It'd be a good choice.

Amen. I have a 2 year old Beagle and she has the 'dog purr'. It's almost like a low humming whine that only hounds do. She will whine and 'talk' to you, and she understand basic things. Very smart dog, my Lucy.

I don't own one but I do own two shih-tzus which are also in the toy group. I had neighbors who owned poms. I do know they shed quite a bit and they do bark a lot. But they seem friendly and high energy. They also rely on human companionship much like the shih-tzu does. Here is some info I found for ya. Good luck with your search.

I know Utah is right above you but I don't know how close this breeder is to you. I found her at a reputable site, she shows and breeds poms.

Tigger, is a puppy, so keep that in mind. he's vocal around ther dogs and a little around new people. but if it's just him and people he knows, he's fairly quiet. fairly. not completely.

he doesn't kiss me though, but he'll lick my hands/toes! it tickles!

and you must brush them a lot!

I have a beautiful little 8 mo. old pommie named Cashmere. She is absolutely a doll. They tend to try to be dominate so you really have to "show" them who is boss. They are also extremely sharp. They are from the husky family, so they will try to test you. She knows that there are things she is not allowed to do, but as soon as I leave the room she sneaks around until I return. If you do get a pommie. get the small dingo bones. They will chew on those for hours (don't get the imitations, they don't like those). Any other questions about pommie puppies, just ask. I just went through all the hell to get my perfect little puppy. Oh, she doesn't french kiss, but if you are not careful she will pick your nose in a heartbeat.

My old roommate had a pom and I would never ever get one. I've also met a few others that have confirmed that for me. They chew on everything. I mean everything. My roommates dog like to chew on cords, yep cords. She chewed up the cords to curling irons, flat irons, my computer cords, cable cords, cell phone chargers, lamps, irons, anything that had a cord to a power outlet, she would destroy it. Bad bad girl!!! She also liked stiletto heels, rubber flip flops (she would chew the strap off and be done with it, you couldn't give her an old one to chew on, she'd hunt down the next one) and not one, but TWO pairs of Gucci shades. Thank God those weren't mine b/c I made my roommate replace anything her dog destroyed of mine. We are talking a couple hundred dollars here of just my shit.

I also think they have a mind of their own and are very hard to train. She barked way way more than my chihuahua and was really wild and hyper. My dog liked to bite her fur, lol, and she liked it too.

She was a cute dog, but I'd never ever get one for myself. Ever. Too hyper, too hard to train. Really high maintenance too with all that fur. You will be spending a lot of money at the groomer.

I think all of it depends on how you raise it. A lot of owner try to raise little people instead of dogs. My dog does not bark unless someone is out side my front door, which makes her a good guard dog, I say quiet and she shuts right up. Since I got her, I have constantly surrounded her by all types of people, kids and adults alike. So she does not get nervous and shake when approached. She loves being toted around she has a sak (you can get them at baby stores) she loves. But I also include a half-mile walk a day. The chewing this was a big thing as it is in all puppies. My saddest day is when she chewed up a brand new pair of Aldo shoes and we know they cost a pretty penny. But with consistent training, she has stopped. She still loves paper, I am working on that. The big thing to remember is that this is a big dog in a little package and you have to keep her active. If you don't have the time or if you want a dog that you can treat like a baby, a pommie is not the way to go.

For my money, the best bet is a Bichon. Maybe a little high-strung, but no shedding and a fairly smart dog.

Well, my grandmother owns one. She adopted the pommie when it was three years old. Now, it had been abused, so that probably affected a bit of its behavior, but from what I've read about the breed, she's pretty typical.

She is very much a "one person dog". She'll tolerate affection from everyone else, but she LIVES for my grandmother. She'll let me pet her for a minute or two, but she'll lay in my grandmother's lap for hours without budging.

There are no problems with destructive behaviors or chewing or anything, but she is also walked very often, so she doesn't do bored-destructive behavior.

She is however, very yappy. The slightest noise, she runs to the door and barks endlessly.

That's how my friends dog was. Yappy yappy yappy.

Have you thought about a chihuahua? Mine is so sweet and cuddly and he is not a yapper!

No matter what you get, I think girl dogs tend to be more high strung than the boys. Just my experience, but I am so happy I got a boy over a girl. I'll post a pic when I get home.

In my experience all little dogs try to lick mouths and ears. I call it "ninja tongue".

my mom has two papillons, and i have one. i must say, they are the most adorable little creatures! they're not overly yappy, mostly if someone they dont know comes to the door, they are very easily trained, are extremely smart, sensitive, and loving.

i initially hated the idea of a small dog, but these ones totally won me over, they're not overly hyper and excitable like a lot of small dogs, they'll play when you wanna play and once you'd had enough, they'll sit and cuddle with you. however they do have the tenacity and endurance of a larger dog, my mom used to take hers out for 5 mile walks, and she didnt have to carry them home! they'd run/walk right along with her.

they're about the same size as a pom too, and personally, i think a heckova lot cuter.

photobucket is being a douchebag, so i can't post a pic here, but if you click this link its a pic of my puppy when he was 2 and half months old.

They're very yappy and extremely prone to heart attacks and heart disease. They're very scared of everything and tend to pee themselves a lot too. Not if they're trained so much, but just as a general 'breed' thing. I always had to be SUPER careful with them at my aunt's dog shampooing shop because she was terrified they'd have a heart attack and die on the table. We even charged extra for bathing them.

yeah that's true, ours tend to pee themselves, and both have had siezures.

They definately tend to be neurotic dogs...

Also because their snout is so short, they sometimes have trouble breathing and will start making this choking hacking..weird sound because basically they're choking on their own snot.

Quoted for truth. All this is a breed thing. They tend to be skittish and not live long and definitely have seizures (thanks for reminding me). Be prepared if you decide to own one.

That is true, cashmere was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. She is on medication. Perhaps that is why she is not as hyper. I also think that taking her for walks has helped. Too many people with small dogs just let them out to go to the bathroom. But I will tell you she never-ever gets nervous. I think I have on;y seen her shake once and that was surpisingly at the groomers for the first time, stopped after that. Even my vet is surprised that she doesn't shake or yelp when getting shots, not even at 1 1/2 lbs when the need and thermometer were so bg in comparision. Maybe I am just really lucky. I have heard that Poms are overly crossbred. Her grandmther was from overseas to prevent that. Good luck in any puppy you get and adopting a dog from a shelter is always a great option. Thats how I got my 2 kitties.

another reason to check out Papillons! they're definately a very calm small dog, and they live for a long time, some up to 15 years, depending on how you take care of it.

they're also really well behaved, even with minimal training. and they are excellent around kids, adults, and other animals.

    i LOVE my puppy!

My little baby is very smart and very demanding. She will sit on your lap and then growl if you pet her. I lucked out with the chewing. She doesn't chew AT ALL. In fact she guards my shoes . Sometimes I can't get in my own closet! ....I wonder if she would get along with another Pom puppy. She usually couldn't care less about other dogs....

And they love the squeek toys...OMG

I have a pappy and I'd never call her a calm dog. lol Though, she is a pap/eski mix, so maybe the craziness if from the eskimo side. She also tends to pee a bit if she's really excited, but when she's like that she has the funniest look on her face! You just can't help but laugh. She just LOVES people soooooo much her little doggie face is full of adoration even when being petted by total strangers. If she could speak she's be saying "OMG I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU OMG OMG OMG!!!1eleventyoneoneone" I've never seen a more loving and friendly dog. I whole-heartedly recommend papillons!
