    Default People with old cats

My cat is old. He's like 10 years old. He just lays around the house putting his hair on everything, scratching my carpet and waking me up with loud meows outside my bedroom door every morning. Then some non-essential grooming and then back to sleep.

I keep him inside most of the time but I think he's bored. He's kinda fat and isn't lively enough. He's healthy but I wish he was more lively.

For people with older cats what do you do to keep them lively and entertained?

My old man is 14. He's fairly active, and still loves to play with his milk caps in the middle of the night. He really doesn't have much patience for the younger two cats anymore though. Basically, he's sleeping or snuggling at all times. His hips are starting to hurt him, and he can't jump on our bed or the counters anymore without assistance. He was honestly never a big fan of toys and such, other than his beloved milkcaps. Have you tried a laser pointer? He's not as entertaining/annoying as the younger guys when they're doing their insane dashes up and down the stairs trilling at each other, but he's still my favorite.

mine is 9 and she's pretty active. she has other cats to play with though. she also plays with toys here and there.

maybe you should get him food for less active acts. if he's fat he just might not -feel- like being active, and that can cause a circle of weight gain and lazyness.

and PS. 10 isn't "old" plenty of indoor cats live to be between 15-18

Yea he does weigh a good almost 14 lbs. My heffaloaf might have to go on a diet. There are no other cats that live with me but if I had a bigger place I would get a kitten right away.

My cat is 11 years old. She still plays with string each day, and she loves to chase the light circle created when I shine a flashlight on the carpet. Something about that light makes her nuts. Although, she does spend most of the day sleeping

My cat is somewhere between 15 and 17, and all he does is sleep, eat, shed, and shit. Oh, and puke on my white couch every damn day and scream at us for attention. He's not that interested in playing most of the time, though occasionally in the evening he'll scamper around with his little bell-ball. He just wants to cuddle and yell at us to pet him, and he sleeps a lot. He has arthritis but it usually only bothers him in the winter.

Funny, as I type this he is puking yet again. Fortunately I heard him start to heave so I moved him off the couch in time. *sigh* I swear this fucking cat is bulemic. He throws up every single thing he eats, I don't know how he has anything left to shit.

I have a middle aged cat.

She used to be fat and lazy, then I put her on diet food. (purina one healthy weight management)
Then she was average weight and lazy.

One day after the pet food scare, I wandered into my locally owned pet supply store, and told them about what food I was feeding my cat and asked what I should get that was better. They looked at me in horror about feeding her purina, and then led me to the "best" food they sell: EVO.

Since feeding her this food, she has put on a little bit of weight, yes, but she has gained so much energy! My once boring lazy middle aged cat now runs up and down my halls, jumps in the air for flies, tears after her jingly balls like there is no tomorrow.

I realized that the food I was previously using was full of empty calories pretty much, like grain, which has no place in a cat's diet. The evo food is mostly protein. The ingredients list reads like this: Turkey, Chicken, Chicken meal, Herring meal, chicken fat, potatoes.... etc. Take a look at your grocery store food and compare, I bet you will be shocked!

I know this sounds totally like a commercial or something, but I am just so grateful to this food (even though its more expensive) for giving me back the enjoyment of my cat, and probably adding years to her life. Besides, you'll never have to worry about cheap chinese poisonous products getting in there!

When I lost my last kitty years ago she was about 13-14, and still adorable, if a bit slower. I wish I could have her back right now!!

I'd say try putting him on a diet.

Have you tried the string on a stick toy? I used to make my own, and she always loved it, even when she was older.

CatFancy magazine had a contest for the oldest cats. The five oldest ones were published in the August issue, the oldest being 36. That issue had lots of good tips about care for your older cat.

This link shows photos of the runners up in the oldest cat contest http://www.catchannel.com/Magazines/...t-contest.aspx

And this one http://www.catchannel.com/health/topiclist.aspx has articles on care of elderly cats on pages 3 and 4.

Here's an article by a vet from about.com which says that a cat aged ten can be considered a senior cat: http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/catg...iatriccats.htm

None of our cats now are very old, except perhaps Paws who is a stray who moved in a month or so ago, but I have had two cats who lived to be 14.

This was typed with a cat between me and the keyboard and display, which will explain any odd spellings, etc.

Mine is 6, not too old but he has slowed down a lot as he has gotten older. I can still entice him with a long string and he loves attacking the birds outside (by slamming himself into the window). That's about all the exercise he gets. That and the puppy and him play every now and then. It does help to have another animal to keep him active.

I wish I could let him out for exercise because I know that would be best, but it's not a safe enough option for me.

As most members here are aware, I recently had a cat that lived til 14 years of age. My flatmate (and the current cat in my life) is also in the same age range.

Have you made sure your cat doesn't suffer from any diseases or illnesses etc?

I only ask as up until my flatmate's cat was diagnosed with diabeties he was similiar. Then when the insulin injections started he perked up, had more energy, groomed himself more often, and so on.

As for my (late) cat Bibs.. she was just a lazy cat.

Plus you do have to remember cats sleep most of the day anyway.

    I love older cats.

Eleven year old ShadyCat is in the feet-tucked-under-the-body position right next to my foot. He can be lured to playfulness with ribbons and loves to try his luck at fitting inside of boxes. He has several boxes to chose from but he likes the ones with openings - I stick my fingers thru the openings and he tries to grab them, a game we play.

He does sleep the day away tho. If nothing is happening he is all for doing nothing too...unless the patio door gets opened, or his food dosh gets messed with, or the shower is started up, or his rump is unexpectantly lightly pinched ( he tries to ignore those), or someone is at the door (he performs the invisibility act if the visitor is not someone he recognizes) etc. Still, given the chance he will sleep, sleep ,sleep.

"Isn't that right ShadyCat?" He just stretched out and covered his nose. I wish I could sleep as soundly.

You could get him a virtual tree made of carpet from the pet store. They love scratching and running through it! I used to have excercise/play sessions with my cat to keep him moving.
