    Default getting out

I'm not quite ready to get out, and I think I'm just a little burnt out. but I've taken almost 3 weeks off, dealt with some stuff, and gotten a regular job.

I think I'm phasing myself into the part time stripper catagory.

what I'm going to be making at my "real" job is enough to cover all my bills. but not alot extra. But after a few years, I will make enough not to need to dance at all.

so dancing 1-3 nights a week will give me extra to save and for fun, for now.

but it also won't be NEEDED! I think I'll be a lot happier like this.

I think I only have a few years of this left in me. part time.

So, that's my plan to work my way out.

    anyone else have one?

I did exactly what you are doing Lola. I took a part time job about 2.5 years ago, and had been dancing fewer and fewer shifts until last March (2007) I decided to just not go back again.

Even when money gets a bit tight, I don't think about going back. I'm done and that is it. I liked it while it lasted, but the hustle, hustle, hustle got to me after a while. I just couldn't stomach the competition on the floor anymore. Way too many girls and way too few custies drove me out.

While cursing at my nail gun, the other construction trades and the hot weather today, I thought to myself, at least I'm still getting paid for my effort today. There is no longer the risk of "Will I go home with less money than I walked in with?

    That is comforting.

    That's what I did lola.

I got a job that would cover at minimum my bills. I continued to dance for extra money, using it for better food, fun and savings. As I stayed longer at my job, I got raises and phased out dancing...

What was so hard about it was that it took me a couple times to stick to it. It's a weird thing- but the minute you don't NEED to dance, when you start only doing it for extra cash to have fun with, you start having fun at the club- cause you're not stressed about making money.

So when you have fun at the club- your earnings go UP! Then you sit there at the boring day job wondering why the hell you're there... then ya quit, go back to dancing, it gets stressful again, etc. Vicious Cycle.

When you finally get to the point where you've stuck with it llong enough, and you don't HAVE to dance even for the extra money... you'll see why you stuck with it.

I've unfortunately gotten to the point where my real job takes up so much time- even thought I REALLY WANT TO DANCE a night here or there, I can't. That's the flip side.

I want to quit after finishing school and using my degree to get a better job. But I have a feeling I will probably going back once a week or whenever I need some spare spending money. It's hard to switch from hustling to a nine to five right away.

    1. Massage school
    2. Bachelor's degree
    3. Appraisal license and business
    4. Tutoring business
    5. Savings and investments
    6. Staying out of debt so I don't feel like I have to strip

I'm working towards all these now while I dance.

I've been dancing for a year and I'm already ready to get out, so sick of the same sales pitch, I've started feeling like a broken record. I'm fortunate that if push came to shove I have a degree and can still make money not dancing. But I'm wanting to go back to school to pursue another career, so I'll probably be dancing longer because it works with your schedule.

What has helped me with some of the burnout is I've taken a long break and am now scheduled 1 day per wk. I think when it's time to hang your heels up, you'll know and not look back.

I want out. I had come to this realization recently. I thought I was gonna be super stripper into my 30s, but it's just not working out that way. It is destroying me. I don't have a plan because this has all just happened. I look forward to reading everyone's responses.

I really agree with that. If you feel trapped, that's the worst. If you're going in for icing on the cake, so to speak, then that same pressure isn't there. It eases the burden of carrying your expenses on an entry-level job, but it keeps you from ever having that horrible feeling of HAVING to put up with customers because you are so dependent on that income. No job is perfect, but everybody has to leave dancing at some point, and so everybody has to have a plan. I left 2+ years back, but I am considering one last run in my spare time.

Congrats on your job!! That was so fast. I remember you were just thinking about the whole thing a few weeks ago.

Oddly I feel better about dancing now- I guess I hit my stride after more than six years? I took a lot of breaks though.

I wasn't FOCUSED before & now that I have that, I worry less.

(I'm also working in a part of the country with less aggressive customers- that helps a lot)

Lola Rose, how long have you been dancing now? I think your paln is a good one. I don't have a plan yet...

hopefully it will be something like yours. I have a BA already, and the thought of slaving away at the jobs it qualifies me for depresses me. The money will be the same or less, but for way longer hours. Ideally, it would be good to start the transition before the thought of prancing around naked and dancing for people is unbearable.

Katherine, the vicious cycle thing totally makes sense. For me though, just being in school...or hell, even just having all my tuition money saved up, is enough to allow me to look at customers with the "I don't need any of you" attitude that makes me bank. I plan on going to school next year, but I might not even start working as a massage therapist right away...or I might just do it part time. As long as I have the training under my belt and I'm secure with the knowledge that I don't *need* any of the douchebags that come into the club b/c I could "get a real job" tomorrow if I wanted to, I can walk into the club and bank.

You may not need a customer to weigh in on this, so zap me if this is off-base . . .

I would not be at all surprised if taking the financial pressure off and coming in less frequently makes you more popular with the customers. Self-confidence and a sunny attitude are really appealing. A lot of us are just looking for a light, fun time. While many dancers can can project a good image even when they don't feel like it, if you don't have to fake it, I'll bet you do really well.

I've done that a few times (dog training business, real job, bachelors degree, etc) but I always come back. I wouldn't want to dance full time all year round, but as things are I only *need* to dance 1-2 months a year, and end up doing it 3-5 months so I can save. But the rest of my time is for me, not for a job.

Lola, your plan sounds perfect. It's what's gotten me out and I'm staying out. I just don't have the time nor the energy anymore.

But you're right; it's a totally different ballgame when it's not necessary...you're basically happy when you leave with more than you walked in with.

    Good luck honey!

    Good plan, Lola.

I have one more class to complete before I get my BA (damn!). I'm doing that this upcoming semester and getting certified to get into HR. If that doesn't work out for me, my dad has a job waiting for me as a Financial Planner. That one starts at $40,000 per year. I plan on dancing through this last semester, then dancing a couple times a month when I get my normal job to supplement my income. I might as well get my experiance started right away.

Well, I worked 3 days last week, and i was back in a top earner position!

I think knowing I'm starting my job in a few weeks has really rejuvenated me. I feel like work is fun again, and I'm so much happier. Customers are noticing, as well as other coworkers.

I completely advise it to anyone who's considering it, especially you dottie. I was feeling pretty close to how you are, but it's helped a lot. I'm being pickier w/ custys, knowing I'm worth so much, and getting it. I have no issue walking away from money, b/c I don't NEED it.

And I thought I'd be a lifer too. but there are more important things then a fast cash job.

I haven't danced in the last year. Now I really want to do it again. However, only at no contact gown clubs. I'm finishing up my MBA (done on Friday), and I am going to use the money I make dancing to start my own event planning business.

Lola, I'm very curious what it is that you'll be doing at your "real" job? Care to share? Personally, I'm going to be a nuclear power plant operator.

I am so excited for you!!!!! I did that in high school, only I wasn't a supervisor, just a daycare attendant. The infant room is definitely the best place to work in a daycare, it's so rewarding and it's amazing to see how much they grow week-to-week. You willl love it, I'm really happy for you

Lola! I am so happy for you! There's just something about holding a baby that can turn your day around. What a perfect job. Congratulations.
Funny how at both jobs, clients will just look at your boobs and get hungry.
