    Default My very first.

I'm about to move into my first place by myself. I'm excited and a little scared that I may get a bit lonely at night, but whatever, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

However, I am in need of decorating advice. My brother stole all of my moms books when he and his girlfriend moved in together, so I am sol in that area. My apartment will be furnished, but just the bare basic things like couch, bed, dresser. And it is rather small, so I want to make it look bigger and very welcoming. I also want it to be kind of sexy if that makes any sense at all. Like mostly the bathroom. Sort of like what you'd expect marilyn monroes bathroom to look like- except picture that in the size of a closet. I also want to do this with spending minimal money. Any decorating gurus on here?

Martha Stewart stuff at Kmart is nice quality and not too pricey. Target and now even Walmart have really nice housewares.

The stuff found at Ikea/Walmart whatever is nice, don't get me wrong, but it's a little too modern/common for the look I think you want.

I have found that for a homey yet sexy look, thrift stores, as well as places like Goodwill, are your best friend.

I'm moving into my first own place next month, and I've been amazed at the things I've found. Ornate mirrors, fainting couches, really unique chairs, unique accent pieces, like vases, all for under $20.

To make the place seem bigger, use a lot of mirrors in your decorating, and play around with different ways to set up your furniture.

And if you want the place to look really nice and cohesive, work with the furniture you have in the apartment. If the furniture the apartment provides is french country, for instance, a super modern table/mirror will look odd.

Can you sew at all? I have very limited sewing ability, bu it's enough that I can make curtains and such, so fabric stores are a godsed, especially the clearance sections. I never realized how expensive curtains can be, and when I did, I went right to the fabric store, got a ton of fabric for $15, and made gorgeous custom curtains. If you're crafty, you can also reupholster some of your thrift finds, but if not, getting a chair professionally reupholstered is not very expensive.

Go to the Good Will Stores in the nicer part of town. It's like an antique shop with great prices.

I dropped some stuff off the other day and looked around they had great crystal, glassware and knick knacks. Also, the basics for appliances, etc.
