Default What is Union Jack's in Portland like to work for?

I was curious as i just got hired there. I am a minor so i can't go into the clubs to see how they operate beforehand. It seems okay. My last audition was at Devil's Point and everyone there was amazing so i think it spoiled me a little. But i did get a weird feeling about it, and i can't really put my finger on why.

The tallest pole you probably have ever seen. Bis stage. I hear the dressing room is reeaaallly nice too. They have a tanning bed. I hear there's a pretty hefty stage fee (for P-town anyway). I hope they already told you that.

Yeah, i already auditioned, and the dressing room IS pretty amazing. They have plush armchairs etc. I will be working mid shift if i take the job, so the stage is 15, which is about what i am used to, being new to portland.

Oh, that's much better. I hear evenings are around $50, plus with a lot of tip outs, considerably more. Sorry, I misread your questions, I thought you were asking what it looked like inside.

From what I hear, you don't go on stage very often, so you have to sell a lot of dances. That can be hard when you're a minor, but I hear UJ has a pretty good couch area for minors that's very obvious, so it might be easier. Sorry I can't offer personal experience.

Well Gypsy, i wouldn't worry too much about polework. I am unfortunately not very good at it all (hopefully due to inexperience, not intrinsic crappiness). And both places seemed pretty enthusiatic about me. I was so excited! I remember when i started back in montana, lots of people who came through the club would always talk about the amazing dancers in portland. I always heard about the fantastic pole tricks etc. I literally couldn't believe that both places hired me. i was totally ecstatic because i am obviously a gigantic dork.

No one knows pole when they start. It's not that important, most guys aren't so interested in the pole tricks anyway, and prefer personal attention at the side of the stage. Of course, the younger crowds love the pole tricks so they're good to learn for those crowds. Plus, it's just fun. I wouldn't worry about it in the meantime though, I don't think not knowing pole tricks will compromise your income. I know a few girls at my club who are top earners and practically never even touch the pole.

I was curious about the club, too.

Do you have to go through an agency to get hired?
How are they with traveling girls?
    Fees?
Do they have spinning poles? How many poles? Stages?

No agency, but as with most of the stage-focused PDX clubs they schedule a week or so in advance so you can't really just show up and work. I can't speak to the fees but I have to say if they're charging a $50 stage fee that's pretty ludicrous for a club that size in this town.

I've worked a few shifts there now. (I actually worked last Monday, and I'll be working this Monday too). I've worked at about five other clubs in Portland. You do get to go onstage relatively frequently (every 4-7 girls, in my experience). Definitely stay out of the other girls' drama -- the giant, nice dressing room really encourages tons of cliqueish behavior (only a few, but they're very dominant) and as a minor you'll have a lot of girls just talking at you because you're there. Lame!

The stage fee IS high: $32/42 (Sun-Thur, Fri-Sat) and that does not include bouncer or bartender tipout. Lame.

I actually think I'll probably only book another week's worth of shifts there. There are only three private dance areas, as well, and only one of them is well-lighted.

Uh... I guess it's cool that you can pick your own crazy music, etc. But there's not very much money there. Enh. Feel free to pm me.

One of the girls I work with told me she got in the hole $300 there during a slow period. Pretty outrageous for Portland. If the money's not good (and hey- it is August) I would hold off on working there, what with the high fee and tip out.

That's not only outrageous, it's unacceptable. I can't believe any clubs here would charge back rent. No way in hell would I stick around for that!

There's someone lurking here who led a walkout there a couple of years ago . . . perhaps she'll come say something.

I used to work here. BLECH. Do not work here as a minor, like I did, for one thing. The money was bad and the stage fees increase all the time (when I worked there it was 25, it keeps going up). I really wanted this club to work out because it was more my style than anything else, but honestly I had to give up the fun music and costumes to work in a more Barbie-style environment to make good money. If you are still going to try it, lock your stuff up because it will get stolen thanks to the many crazies who work here (not you, anomar

And, Susan, I thought all clubs did that? Do some just ignore old fees or something? My club has a list a mile long of girls who owe money. I don't know, I know there can be really slow times, but I've never had all that much sympathy, cause I figure it's like 2 dances to pay stage so if I had a ton of fees adding up I probably would just consider another club or shift or career.

A walkout!? That's fantastic! I'm going to try to do a search. I'd love to hear more about it. Good for her.

I DO NOT recommend working at Union Jack's.

Last night a customer hit me at the bar.

I got up and went to the bouncer and told him.

He talked to the bartender; she said that he's a regular and not to kick him out.

I paid my stage fee w/ my debit card and left. I don't think I could ever go back there.

HIT you? and you paid your stage fee? You must have been in shock! this is ridiculous. I am soooo sorry. BTW didn't you audition at Mary's this summer?

I went there once as a customer, but if they treat their dancers like that I'm going to tell everyone to boycott that fucking place. uugh. "Alternative friendly," what bullshit. I wish that woman who wrote the article for WW this summer had talked to some dancers about their experiences there.

I guess I've never left in the hole here in PDX; I would just assume they would not be like a freaking deja vu since the average stripper here makes less than the average stripper in other large markets. I mean, you can't get in the hole at Mary's since you tip out a percentage, not a flat fee, and at the D2 I think the highest stage fee gets is $30. The few times I had really shitty nights in Austin the managers would cut you a break provided you were a reliable dancer.

I was, in retrospect (as in, all of today). There's a sign in the dressing room that says that if a girl dodges out on her stage fee then the bartender has to pay. So I paid my stage fee -- despite the fact that it was the bartender that said he could stay.

They DO treat their dancers that way. One girl tried to give me a pep talk, tell me that I shouldn't let one jerk get in the way. Everyone agreed I just should suck it up -- that I shouldn't be outraged, that shit happens. No one got angry. Another girl told the bouncer that the guy was really drunk and should be cut off when she saw me talk to the bouncer. But the bartender sided with him.

    I didn't audition at Mary's because I work downtown a lot.

That is insane!!! I'm so sorry that happened to you Anomar! And I'm even mroe upset that those stupid bitches didn't get it. f*ck that bartender, I would have been more than happy to say he could pay my damn fee if he didn't have a problem with me being physically assaulted by a customer. After reading this, not only will I not audition there, I'll never go there as a customer again. What, do these dumbasses think they're the only game in town or something? Sorry, I'm very angry after reading about this.

Bla. Not much has changed, though I did get a text from the owner saying I missed my shift last night. Hahah, then I guess I owe him $20.

(Yeah -- not only do they charge $42 at night, not including bartender/bouncer tipout, but every time you miss a shift they charge you $20.)

Still pretty down about this. Luckily a girlfriend of mine (who works day shifts) called me tonight and treated me to the late-night screening of the Simpsons Movie, overpriced snackies and all. It's going to be hard to go back to work.

I don't recommend this place. I'd always heard that they didn't treat the girls well, but I had wanted to try it out because of the fun atmosphere. But the environment fosters some fucked up attitudes (where some of the cattiest girls in the world are okay with taking physical abuse... well, and nice girls too), and there's no where to entertain a guy for half an hour. Two minuses!

More lame things. In the dance room they have an INTERCOM. The owner watches your dances and then if you get too close to him then 'KEEP YOUR DISTANCE' blares on the freaking intercom. Fucked up. And the only nice dance area is also the only area minors can work in. That means that if there's a line for that room (since it's the only actual room-like space) then you can get kind of screwed.

And it's directly next to the 2nd hippest hotel in Portland (well since the Ace hotel came up), a very busy and hip music venue, and about four different super hip bars. This means TONS of guys coming in with $40 at most for drinks at tips.

I'm still bothered by the fact that I freaking paid my stage fee. What was I thinking? Well, not much.

At the bare minimum, I'm relieved that I knew I had to get the fuck out of that situation. Enh.

No offense to any of the dancers there but in my mind Union Jacks has always been the club to work at for girls who are into the lifestyle and cache of being a portland stripper, and not the place to earn a living. But that was just the image of it in my mind.

Is it still run by the russian mafia ?
