Default How to close a Capital One CC?

I have two Capital One credit cards that I've been trying to get rid of. First I called them. They mailed me a check for the amounts I'd overpaid (I don't get my mail, so if I think I have a zero balance I just keep paying like $10/m, just in case), and told me the account would be closed as long as I didn't charge anything to it in the next thirty days. Then they charged me a $3 membership fee, and then, because I didn't pay the $3 bill that month (again with the mail) they charged me a $35 late fee. Eventually I found out and called again. They refused to un-charge me the $35, I asked to talk to a supervisor, and they hung up on me.

I'm about to go out of cell phone range for a couple weeks. What should I do? Is there a way I can *make* them close it?

^^^ send a registered letter to that effect, with all account information, and payment in full for whatever outstanding balance still exists.

PS capital one sucks, pure and simple. I have had a 9.9% fixed rate capital one platinum card for awhile now which I only keep for emergencies, and I never let an unpaid balance roll beyond the end of the month (complete with return receipt mailed payment sent a week before the due date). I just received notice feom capital one that they are now forcing me to accept a much higher floating interest rate or closing my account to new charges after another month. So go ahead and close my account, cuz you bloodsuckers sure aren't going to stick me with a sub-prime interest rate !!!

Call and ask for their legal or collections department. Once connected get reps name ,business address , and document all verbal details . Certify mail with return receipt your request and recap of conversation dates, (ect). I Went through this before with another company they continued to charge "misc" fees until I provided the return reciept signed by one of their employees. The certified dates are also important depending on your contract, as they may charge you for an additional month depending on billing cycle.

Don't close it, just pay it off and then cut the card up. Cancelling cards can hurt your credit score.

OMG Susan, great idea. How fucked is it that I didn't think to *write* a letter? LOL

MrHyde - not paying on the credit cards cause I don't get the bills and who knows what miscellaneos fees they're charging me that month will hurt my credit score more. Plus, I don't really give a shit about my credit score.

Yeah, I mean, just because you don't print it doesn't mean it won't count. Write it, make a copy, send it certified. You can track it online. Call and complain some more; they should really waive that fee and shut it down right then on the phone. They are jerking your chain when they tell you they have to keep it open for the cycle; that's B.S.

and yeah, who wants to keep an account open that you don't use that's going to charge you at least $50/year in fees? pfft. Having too many credit cards hurts your credit.

Just call them, tell them that you tried to close the account and in the meantime received a bill for the fee. Tell them you are NOT renewing with them and that you want that $3 fee, plus the late fee wavied.
    DEMAND that they close it.

They are scumbags. I have heard a lot of bad things from them.

I'll have to one day close mine so this stuff is helpful. I do something nice the first time and in this situation I get pissy.

go to BBB.COM click on Consumer complaints tips. They have 30 days to reply to a bbb letter . Follow the procedures , and maybe you will be contacted by a company rep to fix the issue.

So I just received a flyer from CO today about a change in terms of service (some changes to late/overlimit fees) and whenever they change the terms you can cancel your account without penalties. In this case, that's before September 16th. I would:

Call and make sure any kind of automatic protection plan you have is cancelled.
Make sure no annual fee is due on your account this month.
    Tell them you're cancelling.

    tah dah!

Of course I would still take the bitch relentlessly until I get my money back route but at some point the time you invest is worth more than the fees you paid.

    Lena,

If you're going to call them, one suggestion I have is to try and get a hold of one of their American representatives. A number of credit card companies outsource their customer service to India. I have found that when trying to resolve an issue with credit card companies, the Indian customer services reps I've dealt with have been very uncooperative. I've had much better success in resolving problems when speaking to an American. If the rep you were having problems with was from India, try seeing if there is a way to call one of their offices in the United States. See if you can find a local number instead of using their toll free number if you are unable to get to a local office with their toll free number.
