Default What do you buy at Trader Joes?

Well I thought I would give it a try again.. its overpriced and pretty much cheese/wine/natural stuff only which is tough to shop for more than a couple days at a time. And the bread goes bad by then anyway since no preservatives. So anyway I walk around the store aimlessly looking...

Nevertheless, I got some good stuff today. The strawberries were the best Ive had in a long long time. The pistachio white choc cookies are fantastic. And Im looking forward to the artichoke ravioli tomorrow!

    Any other suggestions?

I don't think it's overpriced at all. It's cheaper than most chain supermarkets, the staff is awesome and helpful, too. I buy probably a little over half our family groceries from TJ's. Oh, those pistachio white chocolate cookies are the jammity-jam.

Don't! Dumpster Dive it! I know it sounds bad but one time my friend found over 500 cartons of orange juice that were a WEEK before expiry in the dumpster (not just on the side to be put inside).... and I've EVERY TIME found some food products that were not even near expiry and individually wrapped and perfectly clean. I'm talking whole frozen pizzas, whole loaves of bread, hundreds of yogurt tubs (still cold, even).... I mean, yeah this was when I was super poor... but I never once imagined BUYING anything there - because they are the WORST wasters of food in the world!

Overpriced? Where on earth do you shop? It's freaking cheap!

I like the Mango Shaving Cream and Lavender Body Scrub. Also the beef that's shaved like cheesesteak beef, but I can't find that at the West Coast ones. It's awesome and makes perfect cheesesteaks.

It's the bomb for baking supplies and other "raw material." All their spices (except saffron, sigh) are only $1.99 at the place I go to (in MA), compared to five bucks at the market. I buy all my flour, spices, sugar, oils, canned veggies etc. there. They're good and cheap, a great combo.

Oooo! And their coffee! Coffee shop quality (or better) at half the price. The Costa Rican is soooo goooood and only six bucks a pound.

Sadly, my TJ's does not have a wine license. Stupid MA blue laws.....

Wine, cheese, iced tea, soup (frozen section), mushroom linguini (frozen section), artichoke dip (frozen section), milk, eggs, olives, humus... that's all I can think of right now. They've got some amazing ice cream, too.

Whenever I have big shopping trips, I generally go to Trader Joe's and get whatever I can get from my list there first, since it's so inexpensive AND I can trust that their products are natural or even organic (not all, but much of it).

I'm with Siber on the raw baking materials. Their nut prices (and selection) are especially great compared to other stores. I also get staples like olive oil & vinegars. As far as other stuff goes, I like a lot of their soups, their coffee, their cereals, and their Spicy Soy & Flaxseed Tortilla Chips!

I really miss having a trader joes nearby. They have these bread knots covered in all different seeds that are off the hook. I also loved the frozen fish because its the perfect portion for 2 people, lots of good frozen veggies and fruits!

I like their layered bean dip, mango (or was it papaya?) salsa, bruschetta (THE BEST!), and they have this frozen balsamic vinegar veggie bag. Plus, TJ's has alot of single serving meats and stuff that are perfect for the single person or for cooking for a couple.

I think you also might have a fear of actual food after years of the conventional supermarket with all of its processed good. It's ok, real food is not going to hurt you.

On what planet is Trader Joe's "overpriced"? If my broke ass shops there, you know it's cheap!

We get our wine and liquor there, as well as most of our good cheese. I also LOVE their frozen veggie samosas, good fresh bread, frozen taquitos, cartons of organic broth, and organic whole juices. The only thing I prefer to get at the supermarket is bottled water (for some reason it's a lot more expensive at TJ's), and we prefer to get our fresh fruits and veggies from the farmer's market because they're fresher that way. We go to TJ's about once a week.

there's one around here... I haven't been yet though. Is there vegan food or is it mostly cheese/wine/meat specialty stuff? I always see people walking around with trader joe's bags so it must be popular or something..

Haha--I was drinking this the other nite, my bf picked it up last time. I gotta say, at the end of it I was like "what were you thinking!" I got a bad headache, and I'm one a those ppl that drinks red wine FOR a headache...it was super sweet too...maybe the white is aiight, but would rather pay at LEAST $10!

I cook with Two-Buck Chuck but I don't drink it. It's okay for cooking.

Two-Buck Chuck is $1.99 a bottle but for $3.99 a bottle at TJ's you can get some really excellent wines. K likes the Del Toro red and I like all the Barefoot wines. Might be twice as much as the cooking wine but it tastes a damn sight better. I see Barefoot selling at other stores for around $10, so it's a good deal at TJ's.

I like how they got my wine here!!!!!! Too bad it is dealcoholized!!! Anyone ever try it?

The other thing I've noticed about Trader Joe's tho, is that their produce section is not great or almost non-existent. I've been to one store in Wayne, NJ that was pretty small, and 2 fairly large ones in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Trader Joe's is pretty cheap next to Whole Paych, err, Whole Foods.

I like their Frozen Chocolate BonBons...and their Frozen Breaded Halibut too.

Yea it's like seriously half price next to Whole Paycheck lots of times....for awhile there (in NJ too, how sad) it was the only option...now thanx to the expansion of Trader Joe's you can drive 35 minutes out of the way to get some more options!
