Default Your old hobbies/passions when you were younger...

The other day I was thinking about all the amazing things I USED to do... you know, when mommy and daddy had full responsibility and I still lived at home (I left home @ 17 to go to college). It WAS a lot easier when others schleped me from place to place and paid for it all, before independence and bills and an adult life of my own becomes an issue.

    I used to:
    play the cello
sing (took classical voice lessons for years)
I was on my h.s. debate team (big surprise) and I did Oral Interpretation (glorified reading aloud) with Ginsburg's "Howl" and a passage from "The Hobbit."
I was on my high school's improv comedy team/cult for 2 years (like "who's line...") and we practiced 2x a week and performed shows every month.
Perform in a theatrical SOmEthing every year- either at school or my community theater.. lead roles, too... and people ask me if the spotlight bothers me (old-time attention whore here.)
I'm sure there's more, but this is what I can think of at the moment.
I actually used to RUN everywhere... really therapeutic...late at night- it was wonderful... before my knees got bad and i started smoking. poo on me...

I particularly miss the improv team.

So... what old hobbies/passions would YOU guys revive, what were you glad to get rid of, how have things transferred (or not) between your childhood/adolescence and young adult/adult life?

Used be in all manner of bands and choirs (playing Coronet and singing Bass respectively).

Favorite was Show Choir, singing and dancing while performing for people, excellent times.

Not to mention having the time to be on the soccer, swimming and track teams. Kept me in shape and hungry all the time. Damn it'll be hard to exercise like that again.

Doing the whole Boy Scout thing and having the yearly camping trips, those were pretty fun. Though it definitely died out after becoming an Eagle Scout.

Ironically my passion for video games and arcades never died, way to go me. Pick a hobby that has almost zero health benefits. Woohooo.
Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.
Guy #2: Dude, I'd hit that so hard whoever could pull me out would become the King of England.

I used to do competative roller skating, dance and figure and some jumping. I had sooo much fun! And my slammin' Dorothy Hammel haircut! (it was the lat 70's early 80's LOL).

I saved my money like crazy to get an American Girls doll and stuff for her. I think I'm okay with having left that one behind. On the other hand, I miss ballet.

I did drama tournaments and poetry interpretation, too. I was obsessed with Sylvia Plath.

I painted very large oil paintings, mostly surrealist landscapes. One of my paintings still takes up a set of double doors in my parents' house (my old bedroom, now my oldest brother's room). I sold another one and have no idea what happened to the rest of them.

I played the clarinet in the marching band and LOVED it. I wish there was marching band for grownups.

I wrote prolifically. I was ALWAYS writing back then, mostly short stories and poetry, and one novel. I was the editor of the literary journal and made a huge first amendment issue when the principal tried to censor it; this culminated in my throwing a paperweight through her window and calling her a "fucking fascist." I was very nearly expelled less than a month before graduation, but fortunately she relented. The window was open and nothing broke. I took free speech VERY seriously.

I was also very into politics and (duh) the debate team. In college I took Rhetoric and Public Controversy AND Argumentation and Debate - two different classes - as electives, if that tells you how much I loved to argue.

But mainly in high school, I spent most of my time in my darkroom. I'd give anything to have that darkroom back. Other kids would sneak out, party and drink, but I spent my time in my darkroom. I had a mini-fridge in there with some fruit and string cheese, and my own coffee maker and my boom box - this was one pimped-out bathroom. I would literally disappear into my darkroom for days on end and never come out. I did all kinds of unusual processing tricks and created some really terrific shots. Sometimes I wish I'd majored in photography instead of film.

Oh yeah, LOL, I just remembered... I also used to write poetry in Latin. I didn't want anyone else to read my personal poetry, and you can do some really interesting things with the word endings in Latin, so I filled notebook after notebook with Latin poetry. G-d, I was such a geek.

Poloroid collages, horseback riding, reading (the library would call to check on me if I didn't show up), debate, iambic pentameter poetry (so snotty), voice, acting, swing dance.

I swear, once this semester's over, I will have a life again and do the things I love.

    Wow,

Art, I miss it so much! I used to do surrealist body art with charcoal, pencil, ink....and sculpting. Gosh I miss that. I had the best art teacher in high school. She would tell us a subject, elt us pick the medium we wanted and if she didn't have it she'd find it, and then us go crazy! For example, one time the subject was "Deceit" so I did a body casting of one of the jocks.... ("Hey would you mind getting undressed from the waist up and letting me rub plaster over you? *insert hair twirl here*)...making a fist in both hands, one in front of him, one behind. Then When it ws dry I put flowers in the front hand and a knife in his back hand. It was hot.

Sorry for the tangent, I miss it so much!

Writing poetry. I tried to do it again. It's gone.

I was always into acting..since I was about 4! In a way I still get to act from time to time...but I'd give anything to do Shakespeareor even a "real" movie. No to toot my own horn, but I'm a really good actress and it kills me not to showcase my ONE huge talent!

I miss choir...I love to sing. However I have a tin ear and cant sing for shit...so the world is better off with me just singing along to my ipod!

I miss playing drums...my wrists and ankles are just to freakin' delicate and couldnt handle it.I got carlpal tunnel really bad and my ankles are still exceptoinally weak...they'll collapse under me and make me fall from time to time for no reason. So no more drums for me

I was on the chess team(yeah geek I know)...but I havent played in years. Dont even remember a lot of the specifics(rook to knight 5? dont remember what that means).

Most of my passions like animals and reading(I go through 2-3 books a week still) I've kept with me. I'd like to make animals a main priority again..and fully plan to as soon as possible.

Writing. I still write from time to time. But I was always the golden child of my advanced lit classes!Except for the one year we had some freakishly Christian (it was a public school) aas our teacher. She told us every day why we were going to hell and I spent much time arguing with her. Our final term paper was free form...so I wrote it on Satanism JUST to piss her off. Well researched..my cool-as-fuck AP chem teacher had a copy of the satanic bible and since he hated her too conspired to help me research!! Scared the shit out of her...but I got an A!! ( I was a vindictive little bitch even back then!)

wow!!! This is pretty amazing to see what peoples' backgrounds are...

EE I hear you on the art thing... I used to do all sorts of sketching, make ENORMous surrealist collages with intricate cuttings, model with clay... hell yeah I miss it... But that takes time, money, materials, and SPACE.

Cameron I'm not surprised you acted- I would love to see that- I bet you are really good!! (and how cool you played drums!)

Yek I didn't know you were into photography... it makes sense with the film thing... but that's very cool!

rozz... hehe iambic pentameter is FUN! I always felt smugly pretentious and witty when I used it... wow I miss writing too...

LOL, yeah, I was hugely into writing and photography from a very early age. I was about 13 when it occurred to me that I could combine storytelling and visual images into one medium and become a filmmaker. I had a lot of frustration problems in high school (the coursework was beneath me and we all knew it), and I very nearly dropped out of high school with my parents' blessing to move to L.A. and start working in film. I didn't, but I think it might have been better for my career - that, or I would've washed out completely and wound up as yet another Hollywood whore. Who knows.

Hey Cameron, when you come out next, wanna be in a music video? I'm going to start making YouTube videos for awhile. I've got several I want to do. I could use a sexy actress who already has a following!

I did score a place in the Army Band; I would've gotten the G.I. Bill for free college, plus at least $30,000 a year. But I was a hippie vegetarian with waist-length hair and bare feet, and I couldn't really see myself in the Army, even just to play the clarinet.

No shit, really? I've found concert bands but not marching bands. My grandfather is in the River City Concert Band back in Memphis; if I were still in Memphis, I would likely join them, but I'm out here in Hollywood. Oh well. My grandfather LOVES his concert band. They play several times a year, and during the Xmas season he and a few other guys have a small walking brass band and they play Christmas carols at the mall and stuff. They have a great time with it.

    This is a Great Thread!

I used to really enjoy building plastic models, when I was a kid. I would sit for hours each day making sure all the details were just perfect! God I miss the smell of the Glue !! LOL

Rock collecting was also very big on my list... Quartz, and Mica, and Pirite. wonder where my rock collection went too.... The shapes and colers used to amaze me

Playing guitar was also something I loved to do when I was younger, but as I got older my time to practice was limited, and well I dont have the most nimble fingers in the world LOL

The one thing that I love to do from my childhood , and the passion has never really has died is baking. Love to try making different kinds of breads, cakes, cooies, and pies! I have been seriously tossing the idea around of opening a Pizzaria!

^^^ heheh oh yeah collecting... i amassed little plastic dinosaurs, Trollz, glass animals, seashells... i think i was fairly OCD as a child.

wow... this thread is making me reminisce... but regrettably, i think i was a more well-rounded and interesting person when I was younger. BmiWM- I always wondered about model stuff... I wish more kids today did hands-on creative activities instead of the computer/video games.

wow...you guys all had such interersting and fun hobbies...I had nothing.
I tried clarinet but sucked at it, tried chorus but sucked at it, when I was very young I was in softball but sucked at it.
I could never, and still haven't been able to find something I'm talented at.

Mostly all I did was read.
at home, I played with my animals. Dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, goats...always had someone or something to play with..

After highscool when I moved out on my own, I was in college, and I volunteered at the Humane Society, and I volunteered for the adult Literacy action..I taught people how to read...
I wouldn't mind finding something like that to volunteer for again.

I used to design and make clothes. I even made a bride's maids dress for my aunt's wedding when I was 11. I made most of my own clothes by the time I was in high school. Hmmmmm...Maybe that's why I'm in construction now? It is a similar process to build a home as it is to make clothing. Only the pay is better in home building and remodeling.

I was also a writer throughout my life. I have boxes of journals in storage. Now I just keep my writing saved to CD.

I dabbled a little into photography, but, didn't go anywhere with it. I also did some volunteer for local calbe access, I thought I wanted to be in TV, behind the lenses, that didn't last either.....flying, i have a couple of hours in, but, would need to retrain to get a liscence.

Oh yeah, and since I was 6 or so I've had a computer (circa 1984), I don't know if anyone else remebers rocking out on the tandy TRS-80, with the Cassette Player )early, cheap version of the disk drive)

As a child, I was a little hyperactive attention whore.

As a teenager...I wrote, did stuff on the paper (and got in censorship troule like Yek. Bloody fascists...), did theatre and went to school everyday in elaborate goth-fits I'd design myself...which was not unlike an exercise in performance art for me. I was also a closet whore/sexual activist, but this didn't really come out until my last year of high school.
