    Arrow drinking = red face

    Helloo....

So when i drink, even after only a mere 2 shots, i turn red as a lobster! face bright red!

i have this lonng dash scar across my neck due from a car accident a whiele ago, and u cant see it normally (it faded) ...but when i drink, it turns BRIGHT RED!

if i drink ALOT, i the redness travels down my chest and to my legs! sometimes i get itchy...ha.

so im assuming this is from my "asian" side since my mom turns red after one wine cooler and i have a few other asian friends who turn red as well.

one gal told me if you take heartburn medicine or pill before u drink, it helps.

does anyone know any other way? i mean its just annoying....i mean if im really drunk and red i dont care...but if im just hanging out and having a few drinks, im all red and it bugs me!

    thanks

It's most probably the Asian, but it could be you're allergic to something in alcohol. Perhaps tannin?

Its an allergic reaction to alcohol. My friend got this before.... she just ignored it then one day she did a shot and collapsed on the floor and ended up in the hospital...yea... umm ... not safe.

I'd say its the classic "Asian Glow" as many of my friends like to call it. I have two Asian roommates: one cannot have even half a drink before turning bright red and getting a headache, and the other can tolerate about a glass of wine. If she has more, she throws up. I also had a boyfriend who could tolerate alcohol just fine, but he still turned red as a beet when he drank.

I have heard several times that many Asian people have trouble processing alcohol because of genetics or something.

I'm gonna look it up and post again if I can find anything worthwile.

Epidemiologic studies have found that rates of alcohol use and alcoholism in persons of Asian descent are lower than rates in other ethnic groups. One possible reason is that about half of certain Asians, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean persons, have a deficiency of the low-Km mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) isoenzyme, which is responsible for metabolizing acetaldehyde. A deficiency of ALDH2 results from inheritance of the mutant ALDH2*2 allele, a dominant mutation that exerts its effect both by reducing enzyme activity and increasing the turnover of this activity . After ingestion of alcohol, the faces of Asians with one or both alleles of ALDH2*2 become visibly flushed. Asians who are homozygous for ALDH2*1 generally lack visible alcohol-induced flushing or experience only a mild flush response.

Alcohol flush reaction, (also known as Asian flush, Asian glow and ADH deficiency) is a condition where the body cannot break down ingested alcohol completely, due to a deficiency of an inactive enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) which is normally responsible for breaking down acetaldehyde, a byproduct of the metabolism of alcohol. Since acetaldehyde is a toxin, it accumulates and causes flushing if the human body can't break it down. Approximately half of all Asians have a sensitivity to alcohol due to this condition and there is some evidence that this condition exists frequently in people of Jewish descent as well.

My Vietnamese friend turns bright red, so she just doesn't even bother drinking anymore. It is cute though....

    Rosacea, perhaps?

I'm not even close to being asian & I can tolerate my alcohol just fine, but I do this too. I might only have one drink (or two), but I'll instantly feel slightly light headed and hot. The redness comes soon after. I always contributed it to being a light weight...maybe not? I'll be watching for more response.

^ Your case might be purely allergy. I know the same thing happens when I drink wine.

i get it about 1/2 the time and i drink ...often.

sometimes it will make my breathing slow along with it. i'm pretty far from being asian. i'm irish/scottish. i have a high tolerance too, so i don't think it's associated with that. it usually goes away if i drink a bunch of water.. then if i start drinking again it won't happen.

it's weird. it also seems to happen more if i drink more than a few days in a row or if im really tired.

I dunno, does drinking get you to say YES?

    If so, who cares.
