Coming from experience in a club where we offered $20 table/lap dances, and had no private dance area:
I preferred lap/table dancing because the $20 added up really quick. I considered it advertisement both for private VIP sessions and other lap dances. The more I did, the more I seemed in demand. The mentality of it'll be like giving anyone who's staring a free dance was absent where I worked. Yeah, some people watch, some don't. I'd literally watch who was watching, and approach them next for a dance. It's all a matter of perspective.
I was one of the only girls who literally danced ON the table as well as lap/table danced at the guy's chair. I also charged $20. This was good for: bachelor parties or small groups of cheap guys who could each chip in four or five bucks. Sometimes, after a no for lap dances from all of them, I'd stay at their table, and make my "table" dance pitch. I'm just there to make money. As long as I'm being compensated for entertaining you, i'll dance on your fucking table. It's rather fun. Often, I would walk away with $30 or more for one song, because the guys would tip ones or more while I was up there. Everyone would turn to look, (not necessarily watch the whole dance) and I think it was great advertisement. You look like the party girl up there naked--the ultimate entertainer. I've had other guys ask me after seeing me on a table, hey... can you get up on our table?? I used to be the only girl that marketed these, and by the time I left, there was only one other brave soul who even rarely did them. But they really were a secondary consideration--for bachelor parties and small groups of cheap guys where they weren't buying lap dances OR the guy that says "i dont get dances." I'd say well, I understand totally. How about I dance on your table for you? 50% of the time i'd get a yes out of a no this way.

And by that point, the busier you get, the more you're in demand and dances just seem to flow, one after the other. It's also easier to up-sell to rooms that way because customers will be more inclined to want you all for themselves. So yes, I actually do like table dances.
