Default What animal would play well with a cat?

So I feel really bad for my cat, Butter. She's 2, but very very playful like a kitten. She always will be playful like this.
She gets bored very easily, and is bored most of the time, no matter how much we play with her, or how many toys I buy her. She's always looking for trouble.
We got her with her sister when they were babies, and they were very close. As you can see in my avatar, they were cuddled together. They played together and loved each other.
Then her sister got sick. Peanut wants nothign to do with Butter anymore, she just doesn't feel well enough to play. Butter tris to play and Peanut gets a short temper and hisses at her. Eventually, Butter gave up rtying to play with her sister.

Butter is very lonely now. She needs a friend. Problem is, we cannot bring another cat into the house, Peanut is contageous.( for some reason no one know, Butter is immune)
We can't get a puppy because we just aren't home enough and it wouldn't be fair.

So my boyfriend and I were discussing getting a ferret to play with Butter.
I've had a few ferrets before, but I don't know to much about them.

Would a ferret play well with a cat?
If not..what other animal would be a good friend for a cat?
I can't think of anything, although we joke about getting her a bird or goldfish.....

I just feel so bad for her, she needs a friend. She's always bored and lonely, and we rty our best to play with her but she just needs an animal companion.

Giving up Peanut and replacing her is NOT an option. No one would want her as she is sick, and she is our baby as well. We love both our cats.

    What to do?

Ferrets can do well with cats, but depending on what Peanut has, ferrets can get it too. I know they can at least get FIV from a cat.

If I remember correctly from my time working as a vet tech....ferrets are NOT susceptible to calicivirus.

EDIT: googled it: "Ferrets should be vaccinated for canine distemper initially at 8 weeks of age, and this should be repeated with boosters at 11 weeks and 14 weeks of age. Following this series, annual boosters are enough to maintain immunity in most cases. Ferrets are not susceptible to feline distemper, calicivirus, feline leukemia, or other common canine and feline viral diseases, so polyvalent (combination) vaccines which are used for dogs and cats are not recommended. "

Ok good. Ferrets are not susceptable. We discussed just getting another kitten and making sure she had her shots before comming to our house...but we don't want to run the risk. As my boyfriend said, " Just cause you have a flu shot don't mean youwant to be in a room full of people with the flu"
So another cat even if vaccinated is out. I would feel terribly guilty if I caused another cat to be ill. I won't even pet other cats I see at Petsmart when I go to buy food.

So a ferret might be a good choice?

And for anyone wondering, that remembers me talking about Peanut before..she is doing much better. She has even gained a,most 2 lbs, she is at 7lbs now. Her sister is 9. I'd like to see Peanut at least at 8, but she isn't bony and caved in anymore like she used to be. and eats a lot more than usual. Her mouth sores aren't nearly as bad. She is as good as can be expected. We don't know if she will be like this forever, or if she may eventually fight it and heal, or if she will go downhill. We just don't know...but for now...she's in pretty good shape.

You may want to check shelters and such...about adopting a cat who is already infected. It's very difficult for them to find homes and are often put down becasue of it. You can put your name in so they will call you if a Pos. cat is brought in. Just a suggestion...

I don't want to run the risk of infecting Butter. I don't knowo why she is immune. She shouldn't be. Althought they were both vaccinated, it was at the same time, and presumably after Peanut was already infected, which would mean Butter also should have been infected. Vet's can't tell us why she is healthy. It's possible that she has a better immune system because as a kitten she had terrible allergies that she managed to fight off...so maybe she strenghtened her immune system? As babies, she was the sick one, but fought it off.
But maybe she is only immune to her sisters strain? Maybe because they were born and raised together? I don't know...but I don't want to risk bringing another sick cat home just in case....

^^ Ah..I forgot the other cat waas negative. In that case a ferret might be your best bet. Know though that justbecasue the species get along...your specific cat and the ferret you get might not. Are you prepared to have another pet that your cats dont get along with?

We were concidering going through a rescue league of some sort, not just adopting from a petsmart.

That way, I can bring the other animal around, get them aquainted, see how everyone acts together....

There will be an adjustment period I'm sure. But I think if I bring another aminal around 2-3 times I wil be able to get a feel for if they cat's will adjust or not. And if it will be a good playment or not. I know my cats very well..so I should be able to tell if things will work out or not.

We don't even really want or need another pet...it's all for Butter. we just feel bad for her being so lonely. Like she lost her best friend.

What about getting a young ferret? I know my cats could adapt to about any animal we bring in the house, I woudl be more worried abotu the ferret having issues with the kitties.
Unless of course you get one that has been around acts before....

I feel bad for your poor kitties the sick one and the loney one.

    ^^ Yeah..that to.....

I just feel soo bad for both of them, Peanut's sickness affects BOTh cat's in different ways.

Butter LOVES to go outside and watch the pidgeons, we tried to teach her to walk on a leash, but dogs and cars scare her to much and she would just freeze up and we'd have to carry her home.

So I take her out on the balcony and hold her in my arms and let her watch the birds, she just loves it, and she is soo good. She never ever tried to get away from me, and is perfectly content to sit in my arms and watch the birds. She makes these wierd clucking noises.

SO My bf and I take her outside with us onthe balcony whenever we can, a few times a day. She also loooves the laser pointer and we play with that a few times a day. She has lots of toys to play by herself with....
She has her own computer chair with her bed ontop of it, and it is positioned right between our computers, it's her favorite spot, she loves to be in the room with us always.....btu all this isn't enough. She needs an animal companion. Peanut mostly hides under the bed, and only comes out when she wants fed or wants love. She'll sit in our laps for a few hours and get her attention, the go back under the bed.

    I feel bad

They are both such good cats.

I guess ferrets are so hardy that they can be rough on cats! Don't know if its likely to happen, but a ferret owner told me a ferret can kill a cat. Anyway, its supposedly best to raise the ferret with the cats and female ferrets are smaller and less aggressive than males. Good luck!

A young ferret is probably a good idea-you don't know how the temperment will be for sure, but with a grown cat the ferret won't be able to try and drag her around. Baby ferrets do tend to sleep even more than the grown ones do though-which could be good for the adjustment period. With an older ferret (in my experience) there can be a period of establishing who is dominant and this can be scary and loud-not as bad as dogs! But a lot of hopping and hissing and the like.

There are a lot of ferret rescues:

It's so tough when a pet's sibling or friend is ill. Butter is lucky to have people who care about her emotional needs.

I think a cat that clucks at birds (makes predator noises, that is) might try to eat a chinchilla. I mean, chinchillas are cute to us, but a feisty cat might think that chinchillas are wicked tasty looking.

I want to add that "Peanut" + "Butter" is adorable.

I also want to express my sympathy for Peanut's illness and Butter's loneliness. It is a good thing they have such involved parents, though. So many sick animals are given up on.

I would also like to state that, wow, your larger cat weighs 9lbs? My Maine Coon weighs almost 16, and he is still growing. I just schlepp my furry man around the house for fitness and pleasure.

I can't add anything on the ferret front, but it sounds like it might be worth a try. I'm mostly basing that statement on my opinion that ferrets are slinky little chompmonsters that I would like to have in my house, but I cannot commit to another animal right now. So I'll take my vicarious weasel thrill where I can get it.

A little dog? They might not take to one another straight away but eventually should.

Despite the dogs vs cats thing they really can get along very well.

I have a ferret and cats. And a dog. Everyone gets along fine.

awww...You have a maine coon....I used to, before we moved...I couldn't bring her with me, as we kind of just packed bags and came out here, with just 2 suitcases and a bankfull of money. Since we didn't know yet where we were gonna stay or anything, I didn't want to bring her, so I had to give her to someone back home...I miss her.
Her name was Chloe, and she weighed 18 lbs. I loved her so much.
Butter is 9lbs..she is slightly chubby. She looks well fed and loved, but not fat. I remember when they were kittens..they needed to weigh 5lbs in order to get spayed..and it seemed to take so long for them to reach 5lbs. They were such little kittens.

But yeah.....Butter would love a chinchilla...in the wrong way....I want them to be friends, not for her to have a chew toy. She would want to play...but a chinchilla couldn' really play back the right way....

As I have said before, a dog is out of the question, as we aren't hoem enough for a dog. We like to go out and stay out all night. A dog needs to be walked. Sometimes we go out and on a spur of the moment decide to get a hotel room and stay the night. We couldn;t do that with a dog. We like to take little weekends trips, we couldn;t do that wit h a dog.
A puppy just wouldn't be a good choice for us. I have talked to peopel that said just teach the puppy to go on piddle pads...but I don't agree with that. Dogs need to be walked and taught to poop outside. not trianed liek a cat to pee inside on a pad. I just don't agree with that.

I think a ferret is our best choice.
