thinking of it. I so hate it here, on so many levels. I don't care if it rains a lot. It was said in an article, they have better standards of living for seniors, (thinking of my mom)I was online looking @ homes in I guess Salem area..

& Oregon State)

I'm not too keen on what jobs are available here, as I just moved here myselfIt is a pretty big city though, and I'm sure you'll be able to find a job of that sort somewhere.
I just moved to Portland, Oregon about a week and a half ago and my husband and I both love it beyond belief. I don't want to move anywhere else..at least for many years. I was born in IN, then moved to IL, WI and then FL. I didn't like the boring old midwest at all. Florida was okay except for the non-stop days of heat and that gets old (lived there for about 4 years I think) plus the hurricanes. AHH.
Oregon so far is great. My mom kept telling me how much it rains there. Don't believe anyone who says that to you. It hasn't rained one drop since we've been here. I'm sure it rains a lot in the winter months instead of heavy snow like in the midwest but I can handle that after snow in the midwest/dry heat in FL!!
The public transportation is amazing. The best of all the places I've been. There seems to be more jobs here than in the midwest/FL. I'm currently trying to find something that fits me well. My husband who has a skilled trade was able to find a job within a few days of being here after making a few calls.
You should look through craigslist. The last time I looked there seemed to be a lottt of office jobs if that's what you're looking for.
I also noticed there are a good amount of senior living areas here at least where I'm living.

^Well, its not raining right now cause its summer. Just you wait! I don't mind the rain too much though, although I do end up feeling soggy a lot of the winter!

PNW is amazing- if I lived in the states I'd be in WA or Oregon in a heartbeat. There's a lot of love about Oregon.

I just looked @ Nike's website. They have an amazing number of jobs posted, everything from sales at individual stores in PDX to administrative/clerical/leadership roles at their headquarters. Maybe look at the websites for Portland's biggest employers... they often don't bother posting on craigslist.
OHSU is also another HUGE employer (10k+!!!) with things from janitorial to administrative work listed on their website.
And don't go to Salem! It's not the best/most desireable part of Oregon at all. If you want to move to Oregon in order to get into a great environment, look into PDX.

Eugene's nice too!

Hey, thanks a LOT!!!!^^^
What's PDW/PDX?
Again, thanks for replies.

2 of my friends recently left cali and are now living in Portland because they both loved it so much. I've driven through there and it looks amazing and if it weren't for school I would consider living there too. but rainy weather really depresses me, I LIVE off sunshine.
...but can you caulk it if it floats?
My very sunny bf lived in Portland for 9 months with his ex. He said it was great. He also said ...goddamn the rain was so much. And he is a sunny person, always in a great mood, without SAD.
But I always get so curious about the Portland population? It seems perfect and I'd be there right now if it weren't for the rain.
A side note, did anyone read the book Strange Piece of Paradise by Terry Jentz? About the ill-fated attempt to ax murder her and her friend Shayna, 2 Yale students who were biking cross country and camping? It is one amazing book, and the point is, the scenery she was describing in there...I just couldn't picture it for some reason, but it makes me so curious to go there.
Good luck honey, please do let us know how it is!

Yeah, the rain wouldn't bother me. I like the sun but not the extreme heat.

Definitely try to move to Portland. It's the best. You also could check out Vancouver, Washington, it borders Portland (I think of it basically as a suburb) and it's considerably cheaper.
I'm confused, but the Chewbacca Truffle Shuffle cleared it up. - Emily

The rain...you know, I wouldn't want to live without it. It gives an atmosphere to my life.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

I am from southern Oregon. Doesn't rain nearly as much as Portland. Anywhere that is an hour drive of Medford (for shopping) would be good. Grants Pass too for that matter. Jobs is the problem in southern Oregon. Most are either minimum or they a for people with advanced degrees. Middle class is being squeezed out down there.

Rogue Vally is excellent for intense gardening.
Omg I just realized I wrote "but can you float it if it floats??"
What I meant was...can you caulk it if you have to like, ford the river? Wait--fuck. Nevermind. *cue 'Trail tunes*
Anyone got pics of Oregon? I'm obessed with pics of Oregon.
For a really really excellent photo blog, go to
That sends you to a page in the 2004 archives, but he's got pages and pages of "kitchsy shit" in Oregon, like motels, diners, bars, scenery, etc. and also of Brooklyn and NY too (earlier on, in 2003) it's one of my all time faves.
