    Default Pet bird owners

    So I was reading the natural cures book, on the chapter that informs on foods/things to avoid. Well, apparently if you have a pet bird do not cook anything on teflon pans while your pet is on your shoulder. Supposedly the fumes will kill your birdy instantly. Interesting.

    But common sense anyway, just don't cook anything with an animal on you.

    Oh yeah, just avoid teflon bc cooking your food on it can be toxic. Causing cancer.

    ^^Yeah there's actually a really long list of things I can't have in the house because it will make my birds sick. Some of them are things I would have never thought of. Mostly it's things like scented candles and cleaning supplies, but there are foods that they can't have too.

    The one that made no sense at all was the fact that my macaw could become deathly allergic to my cockatoo out of nowhere, and I'm not supposed to put their cages near each other. I keep them on totally different floors of my house to be extra careful, because I had never heard of such a thing happening.

    That natural cures book is a load of crock BUT anyone that owns a bird should know that.

    Teflon fumes can kill your bird INSTANTLY and not just 'on your shoulder' IN THE SAME ROOM. You have to either not have teflon pans or always cook with the bird in a separate room with your windows open. The heating up of Teflon makes the smokes rise into the air and it suffocates your bird.

    I don't think your even supposed to cook with that stuff if a bird is in the same room....

    It's VERY toxic

    I have NEVER heard that! Macaws and cockys make great friends! That's SO weird. :/ They're often caged together in zoos and sanctuaries because they are so friendly to each other. Weird. I wonder if I should do research on them.

    Also on the list are avocados and onions, too!

    Also who the heck is cooking at ALL with a bird on their shoulder? All you need is one little slip or one little curious beaky and you've got a fried bird. :/

    Yeah, I had never heard of them being allergic to other birds until my vet told me. I wasn't sure he was right, so I spoke to the zookeeper that takes care of the birds here in Nashville. She said it's rare, but it happens. They totally play with each other and run around the house, but they don't sleep near one another.

    Eh, I suppose you need to be extra safe, then. Precautionary measures are always good with birds, even if they sound insane. I don't even have a non-stick pan. I only use cast-iron or copper pans. It's my excuse for having expensive pans. Precautionary!! Can't have cheap pans!! P;

    Hell, that's what I always wonder. There are always those people out there, though...they just don't get it, and the bird doesn't know any better.

    Yeah, birds are very sensitive to chemicals in the air- so much so they used small birds in mines in the old days to detect dangerous gas leaks. If your bird dropped dead it was time to haul outta there!

    But anyways, I've never heard of the McCaw->Cockatoo allergy thing. My parents owned breeding pairs of Scarlet McCaws, African Greys and Peachfaced Lovebirds as well as had a few other birds including a Cockatoo. All of the birds were housed in one room with the cages right next to each other. I was put in charge of caring for the birds and handfeeding the babies at one point- and I did a ton of reading about birds, and I never read anything about birds being alergic to each other.

    Yeah, i've heard ppl saying the book is a rip off. But I think it brings good points in certain parts. Like this one for instance. Although I hope some ppl have common sense not to cook with the bird on the shoulder, teflon or not. lol.

    But if I had a bird I would get rid of the teflon, just in case! Never know.
