    Default Other Bird Owners...

I just thought we should have our own thread, because birds are lovely creatures. Just to ask things, post pictures, and generally talk about birds.

So. What cute things does your bird do? Does your bird have a favourite song?

Currently my bird really loves Nancy Sinatra 'Bang Bang'. She wants to learn to sing it, you can tell.

What's the silliest thing your bird does knowing it bugs you?

Mine grabs all the screws out of my computer rack and throws them across the room.

Oh man...Bird...he's a brat. BIG TIME! He MUST go everywhere I go if he's out of the cage (including the shower), and he'll scream at the top of his lungs if he can't see me. He can't talk, but he loves to whistle!

This one isn't mine, but I saw it and thought the peekabo thing was SO cute!

My blue front conure will scream at the top of his lungs until I go in to stare at him..them will hang his head and say "oh no...BAD ...bad boy"

He will also say this if one of the other birds are screaming for no good reason...

And he will wait until the cat is lurking..then call him" kitty kitty....meow...meow..." until the cat comes over..then he'll laugh."ha ha ha ha ha"

    He's an evil bird!

My cockatoo pretends to be dead and he screams like somebody is killing him. He *has* to be in the bathroom when I take showers, and he tells me stories while I bathe. He eats peanut butter on a spoon and wants anything that can be put on a fork to be given to him that way.

My macaw likes to chase the dog around the house, and he'll climb the stairs to run after him. He will start to talk to taunt the cockatoo, and once the cockatoo starts talking back he screams 'SHUT UP!' as loud as he can. If he's pissed he will open my kitchen cabinets and drag things out. When he does that the cockatoo screams 'Bad bird!' over and over.

    Yeah, it's loud at house.

(The first pic is my cockatoo singing me a song this afternoon, and the second is the macaw headbutting the camera after his bath.)

Oh food...my blue front(the youngest, but still the leader of the flock!) will FLIP OUT if he sees that you have cheese. He dances around bobbing his head saying "mmmm....." in a total Homer voice. Which gets louder until you give him some cheese. "mmmm" "MMmmmmm" "MMMMMMMMMMM"

My male tiel(who is still VERY active at almost 15 years old) will get in his "moods" and start chasing the female around yelling at her "I'm a good boy...I'm a good GOOD boy" until she gives it up! Horny little bastard!
    This is my evil boy:

They don't scream all the time... if you train them and raise them well they hardly make a sound. My baby only makes a peep when I'm ignoring her... and then it's usually a wolf whistle because she learned that got ehr the most attention. Haha.

question ... when you get a bird how long and how much effort does it take to train them not to like ..peck your eyeballs out ? Or to see a personality ?

If you get them hand-trained from birth it should only take about a month at the longest for them to settle and start showing their true birdy-sonality. ALWAYS buy a hand-raised, hand-tamed bird when you get one. The extra work and probably many years you lose trying to train an adult isn't worth the twenty bucks you save. (Or in my case, about $100)

They should know from their hand rearing not to peck your eyeballs out as long as you make sure to give them about a week 'adjustment' period when you first get them and sloooowly start taking them out of their cage to play after that. Then they'll start getting chirpy and trusting you and loving you.

After that, each training thing, like training them to step up, turn around, 'no', and various other things come with time and care. My baby girl can play dead! P:

Yup, totally agree on hand raised. It makes them so much more trusting than the birds that aren't hand raised (I've seen the difference).

As for personality, it does take a little while for them to settle in. I was attracted to Bird, though, because of the way he acted when we originally saw him. He made a point to do a head stand in his food dish to show off for us, and I was totally in love with him after that!

I do believe, however, that birds are aware of who is a "bird person" and who isn't. They just act a little different...almost like they know that you know how to deal with them.

My parents got breeding pairs of scarlet macaws and african greys when i was about 14-15 and I got most of the responsibility for taking care of them and the babies. When the babies are old enough to open their eyes they are pulled from the nest and fed by hand. They learn to identify humans as their parents or flock and don't have the typical skiddishness and fear of humans that non hand raised birds have.

As far as training them goes- one of the best ways to punish a bird is to put it on the floor. This is especially effective when they are babies because they are very impressionable and do not climb back up very quickly. It works b/c in the wild bird heirarchy the "top bird" always had the highest perch on the tree- therefore putting them on the floor tells them that they have done something that got them "demoted" to the bottom of the flock. I used this method with my African Grey to train her not to bite my kids when they were todlers. She wasn't a baby by this time so I used an upended laundry basket (the see through kind) to keep her near the floor for a "time out." To this day she will not bite anyone for any reason short of them hurting her and I haven't had to work with her on it for years. You can use the same method to train your birds not to scream as well.

It is also important not to make sudden movements or jerk your hand back when they reach for it with their beak. Most of the time when they reach out with their beak and look like they are going to bite they are testing you to make sure that you make a good perch. This is where the "bird people" usually show themselves.

Anyways my baby is named Morroco but most often I call her Beautiful or Monster depending on her mood. When she gets into something or makes a mess she calls herself "Beautiful Pretty Monster" then laughs. She also keeps my husband in line after I go to bed . She mimicks my voice and has been know to scold my husband- especially if he wakes her up at night, consequently scaring the poo out of him sometimes. If my son is bugging her she will also yell for him to help her: "Jooooohn! Get Gavin!"

I've had her since she cracked open her eyes at 2 weeks old June of 1999. And she will most likely be with me until I'm an old biddy.

Both of mine are rescues, and the macaw was the most evil thing on the planet when I got him.He would scream day and night, and bit the hell out of me for 6 months straight. He had plucked out all his feathers and was really aggressive towards anybody that came within 5 feet of him. He had been shoved in a closet for a long time and the people that had him were really mean to him before he was taken to the pound.

He's a sweetheart to me and my SO now, but it took more than 4 years to get him that way. He's still totally evil to other people though, and even the vet calls him satan. They have to gas him to be able to hold him, but it's because he's scared of people other than the people he lives with.

The cockatoo lived at his rescue for 10 years because he is so damn loud and moody. The people that owned him before he went to the rescue dropped him off to be boarded at a kennel and never came back to get him. He's just a typical cockatoo though, he has to have a ton of attention and toys and all that fun shit or he freaks out. He has good days and bad days, just like a kid. 85% of the time though he is the funniest coolest thing on the planet. He's like a kid that stays 5 forever, and I love it.

I wouldn't recommend cockatoos to people with kids, or people who like to sleep once the sun is up, or people who mind having the wood in their home eaten. Of all the parrots, the cockatoos are the ones the supposedly need the most attention and they are the most destructive and they have the most erratic behavior. I hung out at for a few years before I decided that I could handle it, and that site is spot on with the things they say about them. I love mine though, so all of it is worth it to me.
