    Default Managing pain...

Okay I can't believe i've become 'that girl' but I have...

I can't seem to get through a day without popping at least a few pain killers... its like i've come to rely on them. I can't work without taking at least 2 robax and a few advil. I can't sleep without taking the robax(OTC muscle relaxer)... its just like im ALWAYS in pain.

Im starting to wonder if its my body becoming reliant on the pain killers and its making up the pain?

I've tried to not take them and I start to feel sick from the pain...

Im starting to think I have a pill problem

    I don't think it's a pill problem if you're ACTUALLY in pain.

Thats the thing though... I mean i've had a lot of injuries in the past and do suffer from a bad back and shoulder n what not... but I don't even know if its the fact im actually in pain or if my body is making me think I am... maybe im just over thinking things? Im just worried because I hate taking pain killers but I just feel like I need them all the time because im constantly feeling like im in pain...and I don't want to have a pill problem lol. I mean its not like they're any hard drugs that are mind altering n shit... though im finding myself going to the percs more and more... bleh..

I need to find other ways to deal with the chronic pain that don't require me going to a chemical.

Pain is in your head. You can train yourself to deal with incredible amount of pain, drug free. Once you learn to let/get your endorphins to kick in, it's almost more effective than drugs.

There's also the fact that the pain is your body's way of telling you to TAKE A FUCKING BREAK!

Damnit I did take a break!!!! I stayed in Toronto and worked like 4 - 5 nights a week, and even then I wasnt working, I was doing 3 laid back shows a night.... I mean that is a break right?

I just don't know how to take time off... plus its hard to do when you don't really have a home... *sigh*

Yeah...you need to take at least a WEEK OFF. Just lounging by the pool and getting massages. Your body isnt getting a chance to repair itself.
And by taking anti-inflammetary(like advil) you are delaying the repairing process.
Dont take the pills and dont do anything physical for a few days. See if you feel better.

Hello. I think I can help but I'm a bit confused. Where exactly is the pain? Is it focused in your back and shoulder or is it everywhere? It is a specific pain or a general ache? When did the pain start and what, if anything, do you think might have started it?

Honey - painkillers are there to relieve pain. They are not there to treat injuries. You are trying to treat your injuries with painkillers. So of course you are in pain. You want to make your career in this physically demanding field - fine, a certain amount of physical injury and wear and tear is expected. However - it also means that you have to look after yourself. And you don't. You might as well be a football player who eschews medical help, coaching and physiotherapy. This is an investment in yourself and your career every bit as much as your clothes, shoes and music. What you need (I suspect) is regular physio and massage.

Jenny how do I do physio when im traveling though? Yea when I was just staying in Toronto I probably could have but im back to traveling all the time now and there is no way to do physio...

Im thinking maybe just massages and acupuncture...

Wulf the pain is literally everywhere... like my entire body is constantly hurting... my knees, my back(lower and upper), my shoulder(rotator cuff injury) my hamstring(yanked it a few times) my wrists... everything bleh.... guess all the injuries from training fresh off the track thoroughbreds is catching up to me lol.

I stretch before stage as well thoroughly and I damn near sleep with my heating pad lol

What Jenny said. Pain has a PURPOSE; it's your body's way of telling you to stop doing what you're doing. You're injured and your body is not getting a chance to repair. It's telling you to stop moving so it can fix the damage, and your painkillers are just shooting the messenger.

Three shows a night for five nights is NOT a break, for heaven's sake! You're going to wind up crippled if you don't cut this out, and then you won't be able to dance at all, ever again. Is that what you're going for?

Go talk to a physical therapist..they can get you started and tell you things you can do on the road that will help.

But you really need time OFF. A week at least. Preferably on vacay in FL sleeping in my bed...I mean my house...

Seriously, you need to let your injuries heal and that means stopping for a little while..not slowing down.

Just find someone local. They have physical therapists in Calgary too. Witness here.

I think that is a great start. But I still think you need professional help or guidance on how to deal with your injuries. I mean you must notice that you are only getting worse. You also might consider getting a referral to a doctor who specializes in sports medicine (such as http://www.womenscollegehospital.ca/...ogram103.html). That part, at least, is covered by provincial health insurance (in Alberta as well as long as you have your Ontario Health card - they just bill the Ontario government). As everyone else has said - you can't dance if you have no body, and you will not last 3 more years at the rate you are going.

Cally, I totally understand the addiction with going to work, even if you are in pain. Features are supposed to be like super strippers that don't get sick or have bad days, but we're not. I do the same thing, and I refuse to miss a show because I don't want people to think I'm being lazy or whatever else. If you are in constant pain though, TAKE TIME OFF! Just let everybody know that you can't keep going at the pace you are currently going because it IS going to catch up to you sooner than you think.

I'm not one to talk because I don't get a week off until January, but I am not having to take pain pills to make it through the day. Slow down, or your body is going to do it for you. You don't want that to happen, because once you get to that point it's going to take longer to heal than if you just take a break for a little while.

This is the part that worries me. one of the features of a dependency on painkillers is nausea/sick feeling during withdrawal, which prompts you to take another pill.

I agree you need a rest, and you need to wean yourself off the pills detox style.

    I hope you feel better!

okay.....well here's the good news: you're taking OTC painkillers. Those aren't opiates, so they don't slow or stop production of your own natural painkillers. So you're NOT having pain that's caused by dependence. now the bad news: you're in pain, like everyone said before me, it's your body's warning system. You need rest, and consulting with an orthopaedist or Physical therapist is a good bet. Someone that specializes in sports medicine would be good; as you're one hell of an athlete! ergo....you suffer from similar chronic injuries of that of say....a gymnast. Hope you feel better soon!

If you do go to the doctor (I should say When) you should ask him/her about Tramacet. It's a non-opoid (not shown to be addictive) pain killer that apparently works very well for chronic pain. Obviously taking care of your injuries and resting is a good idea. Definately speak with a doctor though.
