Default Proper Care of Make-up Brushes

I was wondering what the proper procedures for cleaning makeup brushes were.... mine are not SUPER high quality, but I want them to last nonetheless... what are your suggestions for washing? how often? drying? disinfecting? different solutions for eye-makeup brushes vs. blush brushes? (i obviously no SQUAT about the subject.) Thank you SO much for the advice!!!

The makeup artists I work with on movies generally take about 10 minutes at the end of each workday to clean their brushes under running water and pat dry. Usually they leave them out to air dry completely, sitting on a towel.

i use mac brush cleaner on mine. you just squirt some on a paper towel, and then kinda fan the brush out over and over til it's clean. then reshape them and let them air dry.

^^^ oh, wow, there's special cleaner??? i should invest even though my brushes aren't MAC... have you any idea what the solution is? (not that it matters)

and Yek- the towel overnight/reshaping is a GOOD idea. I will begin that practice after work this weekend...

when i was studying at makeup school they taught us to wash our brushes in a bowl of warm water with a tiiiny bit of shampoo in it, and then just lay them out on a towel to dry.

i don't know whats in it, and it doesnt list the ingredients (i just checked, haha). its only like 9 bucks or something.. but i guess if water and shampoo works just as easily than it might be a waste. oh well, im more likely to clean mine my way

I use MAC Brush Cleaner as well. I squirt a bit in my hand, swirl the brush in it till all the colors come out, then rinse well. I reshape them and leave them on a towel to air dry. The MAC cleanser is supposed to have conditioning agents in it that help extend the life of your brushes. I want to get the Sephora brush wipes for everyday use when switching between colors.

hahaha poor latinarose definitely feels the love these days... thanks everyone for all the responses... baby shampoo or mac cleaner sounds like the way to go. i don't use creams/foundation, mainly just use brushes for eyeshadow/blush so i don't think i'll go overboard, but a once/twice a week cleaning depending on how often i'm working should be in order, so they can stop shining in the light...

Shampoo makes sense for all my natural bristle powder and eyeshadow brushes, but what about for the synthetic ones, like concealer, foundation, and gel eyeliner brushes?

That's gross. Hopefully they are using some sort of antiseptic and not just plain ol' water.

I use MAC brush cleaner. If I'm not in the mood for that, I use regular old baby shampoo.

I clean mine with shampoo and warm water. My skin tends to be acne prone so I'm hesitant to use brush cleaner simply because I don't know what's in it and I'm pretty neurotic about what comes into contact with my skin.

If I ever had to put makeup on other people I cleaned my brushes with a bit of Isopropyl... that antiseptic rubbing alcohol stuff, mixed in with warm water.

When I was doing makeup I had no access to MAC brush cleaner or anything cos it hadn't come to my city yet

Try really hard not to get water or soap on the handle, or where the brush connects to it. It ends up disolving the glue to hold it together....all my brushes are handle-less because I am careless when I wash them and the handles fall off. I buy cheap brushes, so I don't mind replacing them often..but if you invest in good quality brushes, you don't want the handle falling off.

This is true. I had to hot glue the handle back onto my mac foundation brush.

I run mine in hot water. Then in warm water i'll wash them with Dial anti-bacterial liquid soap. And then let them air dry, on a paper towel.

I do a thorough washing with johnson's baby shampoo once a month. As a pick me up once or twice a week I use this clinique product:

They might be. Usually they're doing it at the end of the day after we've wrapped, when I'm running around trying to sign out actors and get through the wrapout. I'm not paying very close attention. I've just seen them rinsing under the sink and laying the brushes out on a towel.
