    Health Insurance- pre-existing cond.

I've done a search, and got some general information about other who have looked for insurance- but most tend to be healthy and only want it for emergencies.

I avoid going to the doctor for a cold or something along those lines (I can take care of that myself), but need insurance not only for emergencies but also because of pre-existing conditions- thyroid issues, fatigue issues, things of that nature. Most of these things I've been diagnosed with around 8-10 years ago.

I'd prefer a plan where I can see a specialist without a referral- a PPO or HMO that allows that- but I'd like some second opinions on which ones to go with. Right now I'm considering CareFirst BlueCross BlueSheild.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm with oxford. My deductable for my pcp and ob/gyn is $15. It's $30 for any other type of Doc, but I don't need a referral! Good luck with your search.

This is a great thread! Health Insurance basically sucks for the most part these days. About 8 years ago I had BCBS of NC. I didn't have any pre-existing conditions and I think the whole pre-existing thing with insurance companies was just really getting started then. I had severe endometriosis and ended up getting 3 operations while I was covered with them. After I got out of college I found a job with full benefits so I dropped the BCBS. The new carrier was Cigna. Big mistake for me. I started having the endo problems again and had emergency surgery at the hospital I worked at. Well, Cigna barely paid any of my bills but paid almost all of them from the next operation I had to have in Georgia. Anyway, it was hell getting them to pay period. I also tried to go back to BCBS after this but they wouldn't accept me because I had severe endo.

Recently, I had insurance with two other insurance carriers back to back after quite a long period of no insurance. I had a problem with bladder infections for a bit and my first carrier did pay for my visits. Now, I got sick again back in June with another bladder infection and a reoccurence of mono which I didn't know I had. I can't get this fuckin insurance company to pay for shit because they keep sending these pre-existing forms to me.

It's honestly, fuckin ridiculous what a person has to go through these days to get insurance to do what they are paid to do. I won't keep ranting because I could all evening about it but I recommend watching the new movie "Sicko" that is out now.

quite a few state now allow a 'self-employed business person' to take advantage of state subsidized health insurance too. For example, in NY there are a ton of insurance options available through HealthyNY ... see

I just wish I could get on a big group. Pre-existing condition = screwed, at least where I live.
