Default help me before i pull someones hair out.... (dog related)

i move into my bfs house, and he has a yeand a nd a half old pitbull. the dog is a sweetheart, hes not mean or vicious and gets along great with my chow. (what a pair to scare theneighbors huh lol?)

problem is the dog marks his territory in the house. since he is 1.5 years old even if i get him neutered, chances are he will still mark, or that is at least what i heave read. its genrally always in the same place, on the end of my couch near the entrance to his crate, and in the laundry room ont he laundry basket.

he wont tolerate diapers. that dog could chew through steel if he wanted to. any advice?

Speak to a vet about whether neuturing would help because from what I know it definately would reduce the urge to mark.

Dogs generally will mark the same spots over and over again so you need to completely remove any trace of his scent from that spot with some super strong scent destroying cleaner. If he can smell his own urine there he will continue to mark it.

Also as far as discipline you need to catch him in the act of urinating and yell at him and put him outside immediately.
I have been able to toilet train dogs within a few days using this method.
Consistency is the key - yell and remove him immediately.

Never rub a dogs nose in his urine. It's cruel and it does nothing. The dog does not understand why you are doing it and it can damage his sense of smell.
Don't bother yelling at him if you have not caught him immediately in the act or he will not know what he is being told off for.

I would say a training collar from a Sports mans store that trains hunting dogs.

You've got to get the smell out of that spot. Somehow.

We had 7 dogs in the house when I was growing up. Including 2 chows and a Great Pyrinese.
The beagle once decided to pee on the middle of the living room floor. My mother didn't get the smell out very well, because before we knew it, all 7 dogs would piss in that same spot on the floor. Even the Chows were peeing in that spot...and the Chows were the best potty trained dogs I have ever seen. They woudl actualyl feel guilty if they were caught.

Neutering will help, and get the smell out, and then just try to catch him in the act to discipline him.

The dog does not realize, after its done, that you're mad about him marking. You may think he realizes the coorelation, but all he knows is that you are acknowleding "his territory". If you disicpline him later, all he knows is fear, he will not understand WHY you are disciplining him.

You MUST catch him in the act. You may need to resort to baby gates, and confine him to one, easily cleanable place, that you can observe him regularly. Obviously, fabric, carpet, sofas are difficult to clean completely, so something like a kitchen, with tile floors, would be ideal. Use a odor spray, from Petsmart or whatever, to rid of the urine smell (general cleaning/mopping will not remove it, you need a specialty spray).

Once he stops in that one area, gradually extend his space, like the kitchen and an adkoining living room or whatever. When he proves to have stopped marking in that room too, keep extending until he finally has the full run of the house again.
