    Default Drinking > Hustling

So I've been working for about a month now. I worked four years ago dancing but quit due to severe anxiety attacks (social anxiety). The attacks have gone away now, though the anxiety is still there (but somewhat manageable). Once again though I have taken to drinking on the job to deal with the anxiety, but I think I can deal with it NOT drinking- it's just going to take some work. Mostly, I have to 1) get comfortable with myself dancing and 2) push the anxiety away enough to go up to people and hustle, not sit and chat most of the night.

It's Saturday and I'm going to work tonight. I'm giving myself this one more night to drink. Next week, I am going to practice my ass off at home. When I work, I'm going to push myself out of my comfort zone.

Anyone have any tips for being more comfortable dancing or dealing with anxiety of being around people, and being pushy/hustling?

that's your problem. dont give yourself "one more day" because that could just repeat itself. if you want to make a change, make it.

crowd energy worked pretty well for me if it was a busy, active crowd with enthusiastic stage tipping. the crowd energy just kept me going all night and being so busy doing dances i couldn't stop to drink or worry about rejection.

on the flipside, slow nights where i knew the customers would spend also worked, because it was a relaxed hustle and yet there was no pressure because every guy came in to spend.

also on nights when i didn't want to drink at work, being really horny worked about as well, for whatever reason.

and the main thing that helped me not drink at work TO work was focusing on getting as much money as possible out of customers i actually liked. it is easy to notdrink when you are only talking to and dancing for people who seem cool and reward you accordingly.

I have the same problem, I've had anxiety issues for about 6-7 years now.
I find, whn learning to deal with it without substances, it's important to not push yourself to much to fast. Take it easy that first non-drinking day at work. Don't push yourself to a huge goal that day. This is about making things better in the long term. Keep hustling and socializing, but take a break by yourself when you need to to relax and breathe. Easy stretching breaks help, too. Move at a comfortable pace, don't push yourself to rush around too much. Eventually, you'll be able to handle more and more.

    Anyway, good luck!

I love nights when I'm too busy to be nervous. It's the slower times that really worry me. On those fast nights, I do pretty much sober up from simply not having the chance to drink much. So I know I can do it!

Sadly, horny isn't much of an option for me. Paxil is my wonder drug, but it made me pretty much asexual. I'll keep in mind hanging only with people who are cool. Don't think I need to deal with too many assholes just yet.

Thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind, and thanks for the post. I always try to overpush myself (and then become negative when I feel I don't accomplish it all).

I experience anxiety when approaching customers. I am fine once I get talking and they are being friendly and nice but the initial approach and fear of rejection usually motivates me to only talk to customers who approach me which of course affects my earnings.

Practice some positive self talk. I have been trying this lately, walking around telling myself that I am hot and it seems to be working a bit better.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Just wanted to let y'all know that I managed to stay sober last night for four hours! Hey, not perfection but I'm pretty proud of myself. I am going to practice, practice this week before I go in at the end of the week.

And being in a SC sober is a whole lot different than being in there drinking!

Its been said before in the other threads, but I wanted to re-iterate. If you make big plans, plan to fail. Think about it as an hour-by-hour thing. Set a specific goal:

from 7-8 PM, I am going to make x amount of "rounds". When someone bites, I will wait no more than x amount of songs to pitch. I will drink one bottled water, and one red bull, as need be...etc. After that hour is up, re-evaluate.

Of course if the club is busy and you can keep working, it makes it easy...until the end of the night. Be very diligent there, do not "reward" yourself with a drink. I used to do that all the time, and it totally destroyed the entire plan!
