Default Arghh, female dominant professions and cattiness

Geez, I guess there can always be a catty woman, anywhere you go but it certainly seems like female dominated professions (nursing, flight attendants, strippers, hair stylists, etc.) have their share of them. I didn't struggle too much in nursing with many women I couldn't stand being around and to be honest it wasn't too terribly bad when I was dancing but boy between flight attendant school and this cosmetology course that is going to last one year I have met my share of them.

Maybe, since I am older and have an opinion, others don't like it. For example, yesterday our instructor asked what the down side of the business was and one girls said cut-throatness and I said superficial people. I thought the girl across from me was going to have a stroke, she got completely hysterical about my saying it was superficial but others agreed it was, now she is just a total bitch to me. I mean we all have to be around each other 30 hours a week. I just wish we could get along without all the tension since we are going to be together one year. Then today a fight amongst two other girls almost broke out. I mean it is a diverse class with half of it being 18 year olds, 30% being 21-26 and the rest of us 27 on up to 36. I could go on and one but does anyone else get what I am saying here?

Sadly, it's one of the main reasons why women have a glass ceiling. I'm currently reading a book called The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss without Being a Bitch. I hope to learn much form it.

^^ Sounds like a good read. Where'd you get it? Who is the author?

I got it off Amazon.com, it's by Caitlin Friedman and Kimberley Yorio.

Here is a great essay on women and their cattiness limiting themselves in the workplace.

That was an excellent article. Thanks Hat. I thought about taking this girl to the side and talking with her and telling her we are all entitled to our OWN opinions. She may or may not agree with me and she can voice it if she so chooses but I am not going to engage her in an arguement. As she gets older she will develop a stronger opinion and she'll face other's with more differences, that's life.

It's nice to find others you can relate to but I'd rather be myself and be an outcast then conform and be ordinary.

Another good read is Woman's Inhumanity to Woman by Phyllis Chesler.

I think it's kind of sad that many of us excuse female cattiness as simply "our nature" or "girls will be girls". 40 years ago a man playing grab ass in the office was considered socially acceptable and that "boys would be boys". The common thought was that men simply could not control themselves. Now this way of thinking is seen as obsolete and men are expected to control themselves or face litigation.

Yet now we make excuses for women in the workplace and say that it's just the way women are and that nothing can be done about it. This is an attitude that needs to change just like our attitude toward male work place behavior changed 40 years ago. If we can agree that employees should be able to work in a non-hostile sexual environment then they should also be allowed to work in a non-hostile intrasexual environment.

I never said that girls will be girls. I do think that women are socialized to be catty and gossipy rather than professional and tell things to people's faces. Like the essay said, it is learned behavior that can be unlearned, or never taught in the first place!
