Default I hate my new roomates already

I just moved in this morning. It's the first place where I know literally no one in the city, even though it's only about an hour from home.

I moved into one of those college apartments where you have your own room and bathroom, but share a livingroom and kitchen with 3-4 other girls.

Today was one of the last move in days, and it was widely known, with banners everywhere. So, I go up to my new apartment, so excited that this is my first one I got with no help from anyone else, and what do I find when I go inside? Utter, total FILTH. There were dirty dishes with fucking bugs in the sink. Empty bottles and drug store bags all over the floor, the entire refrigerator an dall cabnets were full, so where the hell am I supposed to put my shit?

Oh, and it's furnished apartments, so one of the roomates decided to bring her own coffee table and side table, so she stacked the ones that were already in there right against my door. There is a fee for removing furniture, and I didn't bring my own, so that sure as hell is not my responsability! So, I dragged them back out into the living room, and left them there. Along with a note on the refrigerator saying to wash the dishes so we don't get roaches. And, there were clothes everywhere. Doors were left open, trash was on the floor. I can't fucking believe this. You'd think it'd be common curtesy to not live like that in a community type arangement, but espescially when you know you have a new roomate moving in that day. What the hell?

It even gets better. So I signed for room B, which is bigger (and it says your letter all over the lease), but when I got up there, one of the girls shit was already in my room. I was getting ready to leave a note, saying please remove your stuff out of my room when maintenance came by. He told me to check my kes in the otehr doors. It worked for the smallest room... which is significantly smaller, but totally secluded in the very back. The big room, which I actually signed for, opens straight out into the living room, and is right across from the front door. So I can't decide if I want the bigger room which I signed for and to make this bitch move, or if I want the smaller room, but have nearly total privacy in my very own corner of the house behind the kitchen.

What room would you choose? Is there anything I can do about my messy and obviously inconsiderate roomates? I just signed this lease for a year. I was even thinking I should throw some of their shit out since I was told I would hjave my own cabnit and own shelf in the fridge, but there was 0 room. It was packed.

    Ugh. Help!?!

Oh noes! I think I would choose the room in the back since it sounds like you aren't going to get along very well with these girls, and it's probably going to be quieter back there. That totally sucks about the mess! Do you know how long the other girls have lived there? Because if they just moved in too, then I would call a 'house meeting' or something when you meet them all, under the guise of just laying some ground rules, and then make a chore list or something to put on the fridge.

Could you live in the smaller room? Is it big enough for you now plus if your there for a year all the extra stuff you'l get?

How much time will you be there for? I mean during the day? Is it just a place to sleep? Or will you be hanging out in the lounge lots?

Settle in and see how things pan out. If shit dosn't happen then lay down the law.

I'd ask for a sit down with these girls. Make arrangements to divide chores up. If they don't pull their part then everything goes in the garbage. I would probably invest iin some paper plates as well. I mean they obviously aren't use to cleaning and mommy and daddy probably didn't make them take any responsiblity at home growing up. They may or may not change at this point. If you want the larger room let the girl know that decided to take it over that you signed for it in your lease. You have proof that it is yours. I personally would take the smaller one for peace and quiet but not to be a pushover my any means which is why you sit down with these ladies. The one on one approach may work better because sometimes young women get more defensive when their friends are around and decide to "show off". But, yeah, make out a piece of paper with everyone's on it. Sit down and decide who does what. If it doesn't get done then it goes to the dump.

DEFINITELY the smaller room in the back. I think that was a lucky break in disguise, actually. Slobs are so often obnoxiously loud - look how inconsiderate they've already demonstrated themselves to be. This room will work much better fro escaping from them. Yeah, it's a drag that the bigger room got snatched, but you are clearly going to have to pick your battles here. How great that you don't have to share a bathroom with any of them! That's a huge bonus.

As for dealing with the rest? Again, pick your battles. As slobby as they are, you really don't want to start off being seen (even unfairly) as the uptight bitch who wants to control everything. That would REALLY get things off on the wrong foot. If you're flexible on some points, you'll have a lot more strength behind you on others.

I dunno, I don't think the secluded room will really afford much quiet in that type of setting. I'd probably thump my chest, reclaim the biggest room that was rightfully mine and tell everyone to stfu if they were still partying hard at 3am. Oh, I'd also tell them to make room in the cabinets and fridge for my stuff too. If nothing happened within 24 hours I'd start flinging shit out and make my own room.

Ditto ! Even though I'd probably go for the bigger room simply based on the space factor..The fact that it's right off the living room is a huge red flag ! I can just imagine you have major conflicts over noise issues !

It seems like you're going to have to put your foot down and claim your space. Also me being me, I might clean everything..(I have nasty shit and bugs, yuck barf !) then tell them this is how I expect it to remain, in a nice way of course.

a problem with changing rooms is that it's on your lease. and if theyre so messy.. any damages or anything, you would be held responsible for because youre the one whose name is on the lease for that room.

Fawn, i am officially in love with you. You have the coolest attitude when you bitch.

I've lived with some pretty fucked up roomates. You're best bet is to, well, bitch. Tell 'em! BUT, be prepared to wash the dishes yourself, as well. If they refuse to be sanitary, and you don't want roaches... Well...

You're a tough chick. Make 'em pick up the junk! They'll listen, get bold with them.

I have a feeling you'll be breaking that lease, though.

Are you paying more for the bigger room? Is this one of those college apartment setups out off Riverside?

First of all, don't leave them notes. You need to introduce yourself and tell them outright to their face. Leaving notes is only going to cause them to laugh and think you are non-confrontational. Make a list, and read it off to them. But be friendly, it is the weekend, perhaps they were just partying and hacn't been home.

I'm not being sympathetic to the girls BTW. I lived at Dobie, had my own room and bathroom, but had to share common area. My fucking roomates got a ferret and hid his stinky ass from me! Fortunately I love animals, so it wasn't a big deal.

But you MUST stand up for yourself!

If these apartments are leased by the university then maybe you can go to them, explain that the living situation is intolerable, and tell them you want to move to a different apartment.

Really, you'd be better off just getting a one bedroom somewhere than putting up with this bs. Slobs like this won't change.

I've roomed with people over the years in college and 99% of them I've hated. One I was tempted to toss down the stairs! It might be better off finding a studio or one bedroom apartment. It might be a more $, but at least you'll keep your sanity.

^^ oh god, yes. of course there's the flipside too, like no matter how neat you are, you leave ONE dish in the sink ONCE and someone will be a bitch and flip out or throw yr shit away bc they are pissed. Not saying this is you at all...just saying. That's why I've never lived with anyone but my bf. K, not true...lived with a dude for a few months (not carnal) who was rarely home, and even that really pissed me off. Once I left the oven on by mistake (but was home) and he stormed in and like, CHEWED ME THE FUCK OUT in front of this new guy I was seeing. Yea I gotta be alone to live my life...

I would take pictures of everything with a good digital camera. Get them printed out in 8x10. Go to the office where you signed your lease and demand a it be canceled. If they don't want to do that tell them you are going to the city housing office and see about a code inspector. To have the residence declared unlivable. That should get some action. No way would I live there. Your roomates are showing their true colors. Get OUT!

There was a new set of dirty dishes in the sink today, on top of the old ones. I didn't stay there last night because all of my shit was still in N. Austin untill I could go buy roach bait and boric acid.... I ended up spending $100 on a full set of cleaning supplies, brushes and gloves, as well as a carrying case and the roach bait. I whiped everything down today.

My roomates never came home, and I leave on vacation for a week tomarrow morning, and am about to go stay the night at my friends house so we can go to the airport together. That is the only reason I left a note instead of saying it to them directly. Well, I left another one. This time with my phone number, asking them to call asap, and the date I'd be back in town. Yes, I locked up my room very well, and still didn't even bring most of my stuff in yet. Ugh. I may try and do the picture thing suggested above if this continues.

Fuck them. Taking the small room will only make you look like a pushover. And as LoveSexMoney said, I'd tell that bitch to back off and get her shit out of your room as the small room isn't going to offer you quiet in a house full of loud slobs. ESPECALLY if there is a significant amout of difference in the size of the rooms.

I would definately stand up for myself in this situation. Taking it now if going to lead to them taking even more advantage of your later.

I would also take pictures and present them to the university housing department. I know my dorm is required to be kept clean by the university. We get hefty fines for being filthy like these girls.

I'd try to break lease too. What hell. Why put your sanity and health in jeopardy? What was mentioned above should be enough to break it and not be penalized.

^ ditto! get out, get out! you definitely will not have an easy year, and best to deal with this shit now than later. my bet is that they are all friends and you're the one unknown in the group. but overall, you will not be happy. take pics, take to office where you signed lease and explain how it was walking into this, that they kicked you out of the room you agreed to, so really, the lease is not even valid, since your lease has you in the room you're not in. i might even, esp. if one of the ppl in the leasing office is a cute guy, bring out the waterworks to get my way on this. i knwo that's low, but shit, this is really important!

    Love it!
