    Default Dry/Acne prone skincare

I have weird skin. It's dry and can get flaky, especially in winter, but it's also acne prone. I don't have an oily t-zone, but I still get zits. Most acne treatments are too harsh, but stuff for dry skin is too oily. I really need a skin care program to get it under control. I thought of trying Murad's acne line, but I'm afraid it'll dry out my skin. Any suggestions on stuff to try?

Dermatologists are your friend! We would see so many people come in with your complaint when I did my dermatology rotation. There's hundreds of prescription treatments out there now with varying degrees of effectiveness and "harshness".

What they'll probably do is put you on a very mild antibiotic pill and see if that helps clear you up. Or they might try a mild antibiotic ointment. But if this is indeed an ongoing problem, I would suggest seeing a professional.

Eh, I really really want to avoid antibiotics. Partially because I'm prone to candida, and the antibiotics make it worse, and then my skin breaks out. I'm kinda looking for just a cleanser/toner/moisturizer combo. My acne isn't bad, definitely not bad enough for anything prescription strength...just annoying.

    Thanks for responding though

I've noticed skincare products and makeups made in England are best for people with skin like yours (for obvious reasons, the gene pool and the weather in the UK). Target is carrying a new line of Health & Beauty products made in England....Can't recall the name but you might want to check them out.

Thanks maxine! I'll see if I can find anything. Do you by chance know any of the brands? (not necessarily the one at Target, but any of them).

Have you tried sensitive skin products? I've found them to be the perfect balance of gentle moisture without greasiness.

I love Olay soap free facial wash and their complete and regular moisturizers for sensitive skin. My skin is hydrated and stays remarkably clear. Also, you can break out from drying products as they make your face produce more oil.

Oooh, I just got this book for $12 in Barnes and Noble called "The Skin Type Solution" by dermatologist Leslie Baumann. It includes a 4 part questionnaire that helps to identify exactly what skin type you have (mine is OSPW). Then it has whole chapters on what to do and exact product recommendations for every budget. Also has specialized skincare regimen's for the skin types. DEFINITE recommendation. Now I can stop using products that don't help and know which chemicals to stay away from for my skin type.

this is going to sound crazy but hear me out:

Pond's cold cream really is your friend when it comes to taking off your makeup at night. Use just a little bit, and wipe it off with a clean, dry washcloth. You can follow this with some Cetaphil cleanser to help remove any residual oil. I like to wipe mine off with the washcloth before splashing my face with water. Follow with an alcohol-free toner and then moisterizer.

For the morning routine just nix the cold cream and add sunscreen to the end.

Personally, I find that limiting my intake of refined breads and sugars helps stave off breakouts...even around period time.

i used to have similar skin, very dry and flaky in areas, but very oily and spotty in others. it's a nightmare.
i never went to see a dermatologist but i did try a LOT of expensive products, cheap products, anything people recommended and none really worked. or they worked for a while and then my skin went back to the way it was.

i was at the end of my tether and stumbled across a product review site. read some reviews for a product from lush called angels on bare skin. it's a face wash/scrub but it can be used twice a day as it's not particularly abrasive.
ever since i started using it i have had one zit. one! that's in about 6 months. my flakiness has disappeared too my pores are noticeably smaller and my skin just LOOKS better you know?
i know everyone raves about lush on here, but believe the hype, it's so nice for me to have 'normal' skin!

I have the same problem and i went to the dermatologist...he gave me a script for a facewash called Clenia..it has worked wonders!! It hasnt dried my face out..i use it 1 or 2 times a day. It has sulfur in it, so ur face will smell a little(not bad though) after u rinse it off. They have tons of diff facewashes u can try..mine had samples of all kinds and told me to keep getting the diff samples till i found which one was best for me...

I am the same way. I use three product by philosophy that keep things in control for me. The first is Hope in a Bottle moisture cream which I use in the morning. It has acne fighting stuff in it and still keeps my skin at a balanced moisture level. The second I use at night and it's called On a Clear Day H2O. It's a cream that helps clear acne by reducing bacteria. I find it to be pretty non drying. I also use their Oxygen Peel about once a month. Usually the few days before my period seems to help limit the breakouts that come that time of the month and keep things at a reasonable level.

One warning though is that both the H2O abd oxy peel will bleach hair so be very careful around your eyebrow and hairline. I also use rubber gloves when applying all my products. Not only does this help keep the product more pure but it I find it goes on more smooth and seems to let me use less product than when just using fingers.

Hey sxy, I can look in my skincare book for you if you want. Just 4 questions:

Is your skin very dry, or more combination?

Is your skin sensitive or resistant?

Do you tend to get dark spots (pigmentations) or not?

Is your skin more tight, or are you wrinkle prone?

If you can answer those questions I can give you exact regimens and products for any budget.

    CF you rock!

    1) Typically dry, though I seem to be going more towards combination now, occasionally I get oily (but normally only at work)

    2) sensitive

    3) I don't have dark spots, but I have redness from past pimples and slightly blotchy skin

    4) Unfortunately, wrinkle prone

Ok, according to the book (if you want to know for sure, pick up the book) you're probably a Dry, Sensitive, Pigmented, and Wrinkled, or DSPW. It says taking care of this skin type young is important since you will be most likely to show signs of aging.

    Recommended Regimen (one of them)

    AM:

    Wash with cleanser
    Rinse with facial water
Apply anti inflammatory product (if you have redness or spots I suppose)
Apply SPF containing moisturizer and/or sunscreen
    Apply foundation with sunscreen (optional)

    PM:

    Wash with cleanser
    Rinse with facial water
    Apply anti inflammatory product
    Apply antioxidant containing cream
Once or twice a week use a sulfur containing mask.

Product Recommendations: ($= cheaper, $$/$= more expensive. Expensive not necessarily better BTW)

    Cleansers:

$ Dove Energy Glow Skin Brightening Facial Cleanser
$ Eucerin Redness Relief Soothing Cleanser
$ June Jacobs Cooling Cucumber Cleanser
$ Quintessence Skin Science Purifying Cleanser
$$ Clarins Extra Comfort Cleansing Cream
$$ Elizabeth Arden Millenium Hydrating Cleanser
$$ Kiehl's Oil Based Cleanser and Makeup Remover
    $$ La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser
    $$ Murad Essential-C Cleanser
    $$$ Darphin Intral Cleansing Milk

Cold Cream: Pond's was suggested among others.

    Anti Inflammatory Products

$ Eucerin Redness Relief Daily Perfecting Lotion
    $$ La Roche-Posay Biomedic C-Recovery Treatment
    $$$ Pevonia Rose RS2 Concentrate

    Antioxidant Serums

    $ Avon Anew Clearly C 1-% Vitamin C Serum
$ Skineffects Wrinkle Relaxing Serum with Lycopene
$$ Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Advance Time Complex Capsules
    $$ Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

Facial waters: It says you should never use toners, as they're drying.

    $ Evian Mineral Water Spray
$$ Fresh Rose Marigold Tonic Water
    $$$ Susan Cominelli Seawater

    Daytime Moisturizers:

$ Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer
$ Aveeno Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer SPF 15
$ Neutrogena Healthy SkinVisibly Even Daily Moisturizer SPF 15
$$ Elizabeth Arden Intervene Cream SPF 15

    Nightime Moisturizers:

$ Aveeno Positively Radiant Anti Wrinkle Cream
$ Eucerin Redness Relief Soothing Night Creme

    Mask containing sulfur:
    $$ DDF Sulfur Therapeutic Mask
$$ Peter Thomas Roth Therapeutic Sulfur Masque Acne Treatment

    ------------

There's more products, and it also says which ingredients to avoid, but this is already really long, so if you need or want to have any other info, try getting the book itself:

Looks like you can get it for half what I paid at B&N. There tons more useful info about your skin type and such that I can't include all here because it's too much.

Here's her website where some of the info might be too:

She also says you can find most products from these sites:

    More expensive products at:

    Hope that helped!
