Default How can I find out exactly what's legal?

I am so confused with the stripper laws around here. I know what the clubs allow, but I can no longer figure out what the law allows.

Apparently you can't get arrested for lap dancing in Ontario...right? I mean, this is as far as I've heard. I mean non-genital touching dancing. But then in Ottawa there are apparently some bylaws disallowing any customer/ dancer contact whatsoever. When the bylaw officers are in the clubs, we only do air dances.

But now there is supposedly some 'compromise' with the city allowing border-line contact dancing...one-foot on the ground, no grinding, but still touching...that sort of thing. And they are breaking down the walls in the dance rooms to make them more open looking.

I am confused. I know the chances of getting busted are slim, but hypothetically I want to know what I could possibly get busted for.

I've googled and searched, but I can't find anything. Where can I find these laws? No one seems to able to give a straight answer when I ask.

I think maybe you could call your MP. And just see where you could look up the local laws about this stuff. They have the answers for you. And you don't need to tell them what you do, so they won't look down on you. Just call and ask where to look for local by laws, on any subject.

I suspect that getting nailed for the city bylaws is a relatively minor issue for the dancers, unlike criminal code violations. There's just not that much that the city can do to you. The issue is probably more for the club that can probably be closed by the city. If Ottawa has dancer licensing, though, you might end up getting your dancer license pulled... painful when it's your living, but not having the consequences of criminal code convictions.

Thank you both! I pretty well knew that bylaw officers can't harm us too much, and we're not licensed. I think they fine the clubs more than anything, but nice to know the lay of the land.

Yeah it's good to know as well, I'm going to look into it as well, once I'm done losing my 25lbs now (yay I lost 5lbs!) haha, I'm going back to it so I can go to a trade school. And pay off debts!! Let me know what you find out Molly, since you and I are in neighbouring cities. It will be relative.
