    Default Am I lactose intolerant??

Ok, I'm sitting here eating my Breyer's Mint Chocolate chip ice cream. I ate my cereal this morning and my tummy started hurting. My friend told me she's also noticed that whenever I eat cereal, I get a tummy ache. I haven't drank chocolate milk since I was like 14 because that makes me sick. But I LOVE cheese

Anyway, what are some symptoms? Is it hereditary? I ask because as a kid, I noticed my aunt drinks only Lactaid milk .

Anyone else lactose intol? How long have you had it?

Most cheese has little to no lactose in it, so it's fine to eat cheese if you're lactose intolerant. My cousin is lactose intolerant and she drinks Silk brand soymilk. She's four years old so she doesn't think much about her diet, but if she gets a special treat like ice cream, her parents give her a Lactaid tablet just before she eats it and she's fine. She's in LOVE with her Lactaid, LOL! Whenever I see her she wants to show me her Lactaid, and whenever her parents bring it out, she starts cheering and jumping up and down. I guess she associates Lactaid with treats like ice cream sandwiches and chocolate-chip cookies!

Milk tears my stomach UP! When I was a little girl, there was no such thing as "lactose intolerance" and I had to suffer through all the mysterious stomach aches every morning at school. It took a long time for my family to realize that the tummy aches correlated with my breakfast cereal. Even the doctors at the time were stumped at the cause and I think one may have even suggested I simply wanted attention.

My daughter has the same problem so I just get Lactaid for her. She also gets Tofutti dairy-free ice cream. My son doesn't have any lactose problems though.

Symptoms include stomach cramps and diarrhea. Certain ethnic groups seem to be more tolerant than others.

I was allergic to milk at birth so I never had milk or cheese till I was older, and grew out of the allergy. I love cheese now and it doesn't bother me, but milk, No Way!

I get the worst stomach problems if I eat anything creamy like Alfredo or creamy soups. I have to head straight the bathroom!

I think I became lactose intolerant to a degree, because I never digested lactose when I was young, if that's possible?

Many people don't develop lactose intolerance until adulthood. As a kid and teenager, I could drink milk all day but now a Frosty from Wendy's has me on the porcelain throne. Some people also have different tolerances to it. Like I can eat half an ice-cream cone and be ok, I just toss out the rest. I guess lactose intolerance is a blessing because if I didn't have it I would just pig out on ice-cream since I love it so much.

In reality, most adult human beings in the world are lactose intolerant. The vast majority of people who are not of Northern European descent are lactose intolerant. Over 60% of Southern Europeans, 75% of blacks, 90% of Asians and virtually 100% of Native American adults are lactose intolerant. It simply wasn't common or unheard of for people in other areas of the world to squeeze the tittie of another animal an drink it.

Wiki has got a good article on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_intolerance

    Dang, that sucks.

I had temporary lactose intolerance from a bad case of food poisoning (the bacteria in my tummy that process milk sugars got killed off) for six painful months. The doctors couldn't figure it out....

I learned that you might as well buy Lactaid or the Wal-Mart brand of Lactaid ("Equate" brand) since most generic forms of the pill don't work as well.

Almond milk is a great alternative to cow, soy & rice milks. Not too pricey if you shop around too...

PS Cheese is do-able for lactose intolerant people because the fementation changes the milk sugar.

you may also have a wheat issue... (depending on what cereal you eat).

i have both the wheat and dairy curse. instantly blocked sinuses, stabbing tummy pain and feeling eurgh. i don't get issues at 'the other end' though.

even when i have soy products i still react - so for me it's the milk protein, not the lactose. this website distinguishes between them and explains how they test you for both/either.

I get belchy after straight milk, so I never drink it. Sometimes there's pain or running to the bathroom. I've had better luck with whole milk when I want cereal, but I'm not sure why. Also, having health food yogurt (Stoneyfield Farms or the sort with the cow on the front-forget the name) seems to help, if I have it earlier in the day and then have ice cream later. I have a slight soy allergy, so that's not an option for me usually, but I do like rice milk.

It might be the cereal though! That can be wheat allergy, soy, food colorings, all sorts of things. I think you can get a test at the doctor for any of these.

I am lactose intolerant. I never liked milk growing up and couldn't figure out why...as I got older, about pre-teen to early adolescense I started having severe stomach problems, especially if I drank or ate anything with milk products in it.

I'm not SO lactose intolerant that i can NEVER eat that stuff, I just have to be careful and really watch how much of it I eat and how often or I'll be in terrible, terrible pain.

I think it is hereditary. Basically your body does not produce enough enzyme to breakdown lactose. Some lactose intolerants have less enzyme than others, resulting in varying degrees of lactose intolerance.

Basic symptoms are gas, stomach pain, diarrhea (PAINFUL!!!!), an anxious feeling...stuff like that. It sucks. Basically, an upset stomach. Some people get nauseous. For me i'd get the terrible pain and diarrhea...the pain would be unbearable, i'd literally start sweating and pain would shoot down my legs. On a scale of 1-10 it was a 32. I literally could not stand it. And until I got my diet under control this was an EVERY DAY thing. Life was miserable let me tell you lol.

I've found that other things amplify this problem for me, such as consuming too much carbonated beverages. Once I cut the sodas out of my diet, my lactose intolerance was much more manageable. Basically for me a lot of things irritate my stomach, making me more likely to have problems if I consume lactose.

I am lactose intollerant. I noticed because I kept getting cramps and diarrhea all the time. Then I stopped drinking regular milk and started drinking lactaid and it was gone. I finally made the connection. Now occasionally I'll eat icecream and if I don't take lactaid pills I'll at the very least get a very bad stomach cramp. I don't have a problem with cheese but maybe it's because usually the quanity I eat is only a slice or two.

    lactose intolerance is soooooo common.

its a fact that we are the only species/animals that after birth, drink milk from an animal other than our own. if you watch cows continue drinking their own milk, as do goats etc etc.

That is why its so hard to break down etc! I looked it up and there are millions of animal hormones in milk related to birth etc.

    Its crazy!

I hate the stuff, i put on weight like a mofo if i drink it!

Ok, it's official. I haven't drank any milk since I made this last thread until today. I drank half of a medium milkshake from McDonalds. It was mint chocolate (DELICIOUS)

Anyway, after I drank it, I laid down for about 4hrs , and woke up in a cold sweat. I was all cold and clammy, yet my t-shirt was damp with sweat.

Is there more to lactose intolerance than taking lactaid pills?

A friend of mine is lactose intolerant, and she avoids any sort of dairy like the plague, or else takes lactaid pills. I don't think there's much you can do besides that.

I think I might be slightly lactose intolerant too - I mean, I never liked milk as a kid and don't use too many dairy products - except cheese, but I do have some of the symptoms. Hmmm... I think I'll go eat some ice cream (mint chocolate chip!!!) too, and see what happens...

There is a study out talking about this and if I find it, I'll post it.

However, they are saying that people who are "lactose intolerant" are simply unable to process lactose (the sugars in milk)...however that inability is actually very common as cow's milk was not made for human consumption, but for consumption by cows. Now, the study goes on to say that this intolerance comes from the pasteurization and homogenization of the milk...which kills off all of the bacteria (good and bad) that would enable people to digest the milk (and lactose enzymes).

The study showed that people who previously drank store-bought milk and were "lactose intolerant" were able to drink milk products of non-processed milk because of the bacteria in the milk.

So lactose intolerance isn't as much from the lactose in the milk as it is a lack of the necessary bacteria within the milk to help break down the other enzymes.

I would suggest taking probiotics. You can also drink lactaid milk. But, I think taking probiotics would also help your digestive system actually break down food products more effectively.

I am lactose intolerant. I cannot drink any more than half a cup of milk or I am really gassy (heaven help the people behind me!) More than that and I have the runs.

I drink Silk soymilk (the spice Silk is delicious! They also have Silk Nog around this time too.) and my ice cream of choice is the Purely Decadent brand (SO GOOD) There are a lot of options out for LI people. Depending on your severity of it, it's easy to work around. You have to ask waiters at restaurants about things occasionally, but it's not much other than that.

However, being the masochist I am, I love Baileys Irish Cream and Voyant Chai Liquer. I still drink it over the rocks or with regular ice cream. :/

Also, babies produce a specific enzyme to digest their mother's milk. As they get older they stop producing the enzyme for milk digestion.

CK, a LOT of people can't digest milk. Asians and black people are known for not digesting it well.
