    Default New Movie: Stardust -Awesome!

Hey guys I went to see Stardust on Friday, it was awesome! It has all the elements that made the Princess Bride such a classic. Fantasy setting, sappy love story thouroughly lightened up with a healthy dose of humor. Michelle Pfifer makes an excellent evil witch. And Robert DeNiro's character (Pirate Captain Shakespear) is absolutely hilarious! I really reccomend it!

I liked the book... I'm pondering the movie.

    Stupid smartass lines?!

And a word that does not mean what you think it means??

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I enjoyed the book. It's a clever little faerie tale. I haven't heard the best things from people I trust about the film, but I'll probably wait for the DVD anyway. It takes a great deal to convince me to sit in a theater anymore.

I'm a passionate to the point of utterly geeky fan of Neil Gaiman, and I have to admit I have serious reservations about the movie. The book, well, it's funny, full of witty and wonderful references, and epic in a very UNDERSTATED way, if that makes any sense at all. Epic . . . but subtly so. I loved just how humble and sweet it was in the midst of all the wit and mythology.

Si I'm extremely biased, but my heart sank when I saw the preview, and it was just screaming Huge! Adventuresome! Ginormous! A-List Actors! Even Robert DeNiro as a Giant Caricature! This Year's Answer to Lord of the Rings! Box Office Smash! I know I sound like a disgruntled indie music hipster who feels bitter when their favorite band hits the mainstream, and maybe that's a fair analogy, but what I saw in the trailer was very, very different than the spirit of the book that I love so much.

    *gets off nerdy high horse*

I will probably see it, and I will do my very best to see the movie on its own terms, I swear. I just had to get that off my chest.

P.S. Mr. Christopher - Trivia: do you know who the "Tree" in the book was deliberately characterized for? (Hint: Mrs. C might know.)

I don't think it competes with the Princess Bride and it was a teeny bit sappy, but I really liked it! More than any other movie I've seen recently. I recommend it.

RoseWhite: "If you need me, me and Neil will be... hangin' out with the Dream King." Is that a sufficient answer?

just saw it today and I loved it too! I didn't get around to reading the book even though I'm fond of Neil Gaiman so now I'm definitely going to.

The princess bride is classic. I've ripped off "As you wish." too many times. It also had sword fighting and Andre the Giant...

I've never read Stardust and haven't seen any promo's for it.
    I'll think about it.

It was ok. I went to see it with not very many expectations, and there it was. Entertaining enough for two hours though. Kinda lags.

It did make me remember not to over-bleach my eyebrows though. Claire Danes looks better with something between her eyelids and forehead.

DING DING DING! We have a winner. (Though the specific lyric answer is "And if there is a way to find you I will find you, but will you find me if Neil makes me a tree?" -- Tori Amos, "Horses" from "Boys for Pele")

For those who don't know what the frilly heck we're getting on about, Tori Amos and Neil Gaiman are very good friends. Every single album of hers includes a Neil reference, and when it came to this one, he responded in kind. (The song actually came before he wrote "Stardust"; he then wrote the character of the tree with her in mind.)

So those of y'all who decide to read the book, take note of a very quirky, pretty, feminine tree. (Is the tree in the movie? I suspect it got . . . axed?)

Wow, I feel really stupid now. I completely didn't know that the movie was based on a book... and a book by Neil Gaimon at that! I haven't gotten to read any of his stuff except for the Sandman series. I absolutly LOVED sandman though, and I'm still wincing over how much it cost me to get the whole series in hardback, because I HAD to have the whole set for my very own. As soon as my book perchasing fund recovers (yes I have to put strict limits on myself or I'll go nuts), I'm gonna get more Neil Gaimon stuff. Any specific ones you conneseurs recommend I check out first?

For me, the top two (after Sandman, of course) would be "AMERICAN GODS", one of my favorite novels, and "Neverwhere". Both priceless.

"Smoke and Mirrors" is a fantastic collection of his short stories & poetry. "Good Omens" is a collaboration between him and Terry Pratchett, lots of fun. "Anansi Boys" (another novel) came out recently, though you'd want to be sure to finish "American Gods" first.

That's a fun start! Enjoy! (But do read "Stardust", at some point, wheher the illustrated version or the straight-up text.)

I don't think you can even come close to comparing it to Princess Bride. It has none of the sarcastic, witty humor that makes that movie as awesome as it is. Princess Bride is a CLASSIC. Something I sincerely doubt Stardust will ever be hailed as.

That being said. I liked it. It was cute but over-hyped.

What RoseWhite said, pretty much. There's another collection called "Fragile Things", and a few children's books that I thought were fun too. I liked all of them, but I do have a big soft spot for "Good Omens".

I loved the black humor involved in the princes killing each other off. It's hilarious how they got along postmortem.
